Yes it does.<\/p><p>OK, so Jupiter doesn\u2019t have large, clearly defined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-the-rings-of-saturn\">rings like Saturn<\/a> has, admittedly, but they&#8217;re there.<\/p><p>In fact, Jupiter\u2019s rings are so faint that they\u2019re invisible to the naked eye, and extremely difficult to spot even with powerful telescopes. But they\u2019re definitely there.<\/p><p>They&#8217;ve been observed and imaged by the Voyager and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/nasa-galileo-mission-achievements\">Galileo spacecraft<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/cassini-mission\">Cassini mission<\/a>, the Keck Telescope and, most recently, by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/nasa-james-webb-space-telescope-observe-universe\">James Webb Space Telescope<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full has-lightbox\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jupiter&#8217;s rings seen as two light orange lines, captured by Voyager 2 from a distance of 1,450,000km (900,000 miles). Credit: NASA\/JPL<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-many-rings-does-jupiter-have\"><strong>How many rings does Jupiter have?<\/strong><\/h2><p>Jupiter has four main ring structures.<\/p><p>Working outwards from the planet itself there is the thick, inner \u2018halo ring\u2019, which is 12,500km thich.<\/p><p>Then the \u2018main ring\u2019 which is very bright and very thin, just 30km thick in some parts<\/p><p>And two thick but very faint \u2018gossamer rings\u2019.<\/p><p>The halo ring is neutral or blue in colour, while the main and gossamer rings have a reddish hue.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full has-lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/04\/jupiter-rings-structure.jpg\" alt=\"NASA labelled diagram showing the structure of Jupiter's ring system. Credit: NASA\/JPL\/Cornell University<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jupiter rings composition<\/strong><\/h2><p>The rings around Jupiter are thought to consist of material \u2013 most of it in the form of very fine particles of dust \u2013 that was previously ejected from the moons Metis and Adrastea as the result of collisions with asteroids, meteors or comets.<\/p><p>Whether the rings are as old as Jupiter itself or formed later on is a question that is yet to be answered.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full has-lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1299\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/04\/jupiter-ring-discovery.jpg\" alt=\"The broad light band crossing diagonally along the centre of this image is the first evidence of Jupiter's rings, as seen by the Voyager 1 spacecraft on 4 march 1979.
