{"id":57861,"date":"2024-04-28T07:11:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-28T07:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/15b90c40-b84c-45d6-8984-572a52a033c8"},"modified":"2024-04-28T08:08:20","modified_gmt":"2024-04-28T08:08:20","slug":"despite-the-theories-the-van-allen-belts-dont-make-space-travel-impossible-but-they-are-a-potential-danger","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcskyatnight\/rss_feed\/despite-the-theories-the-van-allen-belts-dont-make-space-travel-impossible-but-they-are-a-potential-danger\/","title":{"rendered":"Despite the theories, the Van Allen Belts don&#8217;t make space travel impossible, but they are a potential danger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">The science of the Van Allen Belts. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Sunday, 28 April 2024 at 07:11 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>The Van Allen radiation belts are two regions of space that nearly surround the Earth, and that are rich in energetic charged particles \u2013 primarily electrons and protons.<\/p><p>Such radiation formations are known to exist around other planets as well, but the term \u2018Van Allen radiaton belts\u2019 only applies to those found around Earth.<\/p><p>You&#8217;ll often hear spaceflight nay-sayers suggest that venturing beyond Earth is simply possible because of the barrier formed by the Van Allen Belts, but this has been disproven.<\/p><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/apollo-8-50-years-on\">Apollo 8<\/a> mission became the first crewed spaceship to fly through them and beyond in 1968, when astronauts Jim Lovell, William Anders and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/interview-frank-borman-commander-of-apollo-8\">Frank Borman<\/a> orbited the Moon and safely returned to Earth.<\/p><p>First, let&#8217;s look at what causes them<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Earthrise on the Moon, captured by the Apollo 8 crew on 24 December 1968, far from the Van Allen Belts. Credit: NASA<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-they-form\"><strong>How they form<\/strong><\/h2><p>The particles of the Van Allen Belts themselves have mostly come from a stream of charged particles emanating from the Sun known as the solar wind, with some also contributed by cosmic rays.<\/p><p>In either case, the particles become trapped when the solar wind or cosmic ray enters the inner region of Earth\u2019s magnetic field.<\/p><p>While the existence of belts of this charged material encircling Earth had been posited by theorists earlier, the existence of the Van Allen belts themselves wasn\u2019t confirmed until the late 1950s, with Russia\u2019s Sputnik 2 satellite and the USA\u2019s Explorer 1 and Explorer 2 providing the necessary data.<\/p><p>US scientist James Van Allen\u2019s work interpreting that data led to the belts being named after him.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"858\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/03\/Earth-magnetic-field-ca7d165-e1678970787621.jpg\" alt=\"The dynamo effect of the Earth\u2019s spinning molten core produces our planet\u2019s magnetic field, which prevents the solar wind from stripping away our atmosphere. Credit: Naeblys \/ Getty ImagesCredit: Naeblys \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How big are the Van Allen Belts?<\/strong><\/h2><p>The inner belt extends from 1,000km to 12,000km above the Earth\u2019s surface everywhere except at the poles, and is made up of protons and electrons.<\/p><p>The outer belt extends from 13,000km to 60,000km above the surface, and consists mostly of electrons.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Do they make crewed spaceflight impossible?<\/strong><\/h2><p>The high levels of radiation associated with very energetic particles mean the Van Allen belts pose a potential hazard to spacecraft and their crews.<\/p><p>This is one of the most common <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/apollo-moon-landing-conspiracy-theories-crushed\">Apollo conspiracy theories<\/a> that claim the moonlandings never happened.<\/p><p>Crewed mission launch trajectories, such as those of the Apollo missions, are designed to ensure the craft passes through these regions as quickly as possible.<\/p><p>In the case of the Apollo missions, trajectories were set to avoid the most hazardous regions and the astronauts sped to the Moon under the protection of their spacecraft&#8217;s skin.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"1006\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/07\/Van_Allen_Belts-4abeef5.jpg\" alt=\"An artist\u2019s impression of Earth\u2019s Van Allen Belts.
