Your live camera may have captured footage of a meteor shower. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Iain Todd\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Thursday, 02 May 2024 at 10:29 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>The Eta Aquariid meteor shower peaks this weekend, and one tech company is asking owners of its video doorbell devices to check their footage to see if they&#8217;ve captured a meteor on camera.<\/p><p>Video doorbell company Ring has announced it&#8217;s teaming up with the UK Fireball Alliance to ask those with a Ring device to check their footage for meteors and, potentially, fireballs.<\/p><p>The campaign follows the capture of a bright shooting star by a couple from Warwick via their Ring device.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Shooting star captured on Ring!\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0-Gh-RyJfqQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-eta-aquariid-meteor-shower-explained\"><strong>Eta Aquariid meteor shower explained<\/strong><\/h2><p>The Eta Aquariid is one of many annual meteor showers that occur throughout the year.<\/p><p>These are caused as Earth orbits the Sun and passes through streams of debris left behind by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-comets\">comets<\/a> and, sometimes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/asteroids\">asteroids<\/a>.<\/p><p>Small grains of debris enter Earth&#8217;s atmosphere and burn up, causing meteors or &#8216;shooting stars&#8217; to appear in the sky.<\/p><p>A named meteor shower always occurs at the same time and in the same part of the sky every year.<\/p><p>Each meteor shower is named after the region of sky from which meteors appear to emanate, known as the &#8216;radiant&#8217;.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A NASA diagram showing the orbit of a comet around the Sun. Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-doorbell-campaign\"><strong>The doorbell campaign<\/strong><\/h2><p>The UK Fireball Alliance and Ring say they are providing 50 devices across the UK in the hope that users will capture meteors in the sky.<\/p><p>Devices have been made available to those in the best areas to view a meteor shower.<\/p><p>&#8220;Travelling at speeds of up to 70 km per second, meteors travel faster than any other objects in the sky,&#8221; says Charlotte Bays, Secretary at the UKFAII.<\/p><p>&#8220;As a result, shooting stars are usually gone within a few seconds.
