With a satellite constellation."},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">How do you communicate with a spacecraft when the Moon is in the way? <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Blaine Curcio\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Thursday, 09 May 2024 at 07:56 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>China&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/chang-e-6\">Chang&#8217;e 6<\/a> mission is set to return samples from the far side of the Moon, but since the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/why-always-see-same-side-moon\">same side of the Moon always faces Earth<\/a>, how do ground control communicate with the lunar lander?<\/p><p>One of the biggest problems with landing a mission on the lunar far side is that spacecraft can\u2019t communicate directly with Earth from the surface, as the Moon itself blocks radio signals.<\/p><p>To resolve this, China uses relay satellites to convey signals from the surface back to Earth.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A lunar lander on the far side of the Moon creates communication obstacles that need to be overcome. Xinhua\/Alamy Stock Photo<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-queqiao-lunar-constellation\"><strong>The Queqiao lunar constellation<\/strong><\/h2><p>The first of these, Queqiao, launched on 20 May 2018.<\/p><p>It is in a halo orbit around the Earth\u2013Moon L2 Legrange point, which is directly behind the Moon with respect to Earth.<\/p><p>Queqiao helped support the Chang\u2019e 4 mission, the first ever to land on the lunar far side when it touched down within the Von K\u00e1rm\u00e1n crater in January 2019.<\/p><p>The Queqiao-2 relay satellite, launched in March 2024, is a larger craft weighing 1,200kg (2,645lb).<\/p><p>Queqiao-2 was placed in frozen elliptical lunar orbit, meaning it can support missions across the whole of the Moon.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/05\/GettyImages-2097880342.jpg\" alt=\"Launch of relay satellite Queqiao-2 blasts from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site on 20 March 2024 in Wenchang, Hainan Province of China.
