Here&#8217;s how to see it."},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Rugged, steep, crater-strewn Rupes Altai is a particularly striking sight when the light is coming from the west. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Pete Lawrence\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Friday, 10 May 2024 at 09:01 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>Rupes Altai is an escarpment on the Moon, which basically means it&#8217;s a slope that has formed due to faulting or erosion.<\/p><p>In fact, Rupes Altai is the most prominent lunar escarpment visible from Earth.<\/p><p>Two surface regions divided by an escarpment will have different heights relative to one another.<\/p><p>This feature has undergone several changes in name. Originally known as the Altai Mountains, it was formally renamed to the Altai Scarp back in 1961, being latinised to Rupes Altai three years after that.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Illustration showing the location of Rupes Altai on the Moon. Credit Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-key-facts\"><strong>Key facts<\/strong><\/h2><ul><li><strong>Type:<\/strong> Escarpment<\/li><li><strong>Size: <\/strong>480km<\/li><li><strong>Longitude\/latitude: <\/strong>23.7\u00b0 E, 24.3\u00b0 S<\/li><li><strong>Age: <\/strong>Around 3.9 billion years<\/li><li><strong>Best time to see: <\/strong>Five days after new Moon (13\u201315 May) or four days after full Moon (26\u201328 May)<\/li><li><strong>Minimum equipment:<\/strong> 10x binoculars<\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rupes-altai-location\"><strong>Rupes Altai location<\/strong><\/h2><p>Rupes Altai is associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/moon\/mare-nectaris\">Mare Nectaris<\/a>, as it represents the southwest section of the Nectaris Basin\u2019s rim.<\/p><p>The Nectaris Basin is one of those lunar features that can be difficult to see well, something that may seem surprising considering it\u2019s around 800km in diameter.<\/p><p>The problem is that the rest of the rim other than Rupes Altai is heavily eroded.<\/p><p>Catch the region when the terminator is just to the east of Mare Nectaris and the full extent of the Nectaris Basin is a little easier to imagine.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full has-lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1003\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/05\/rupes-altai-mare-nectaris.jpg\" alt=\"Image showing the area around Mare Nectaris and Rupes Altai on the Moon. Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-observing-rupes-altai\"><strong>Observing Rupes Altai<\/strong><\/h2><p>Rupes Altai itself is a magnificent structure best appreciated, as is often the case, when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/moon-terminator\">lunar terminator<\/a> is nearby.<\/p><p>The best shadows are cast by the escarpment when light is coming from the west \u2013 in other words, when the lunar night is approaching during the waning gibbous phase.<\/p><p>At times when the light comes from the east during the waxing crescent phase, Rupes Altai tends to look like a bright squiggle as its slopes catch the Sun\u2019s light face-on.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1832\" height=\"947\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/02\/RUPES-ALTAI-COM-NOME-032c405.png\" alt=\"Rupes Altai by Fernando Oliveira De Menezes, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Eqipment: APO 150 Esprit ED, ASI 290 mc, Filter L Baader<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The escarpment slope has a considerable length, stretching northwest from 88km crater <strong>Piccolomini<\/strong> before heading north, running slightly west of 101km <strong>Catharina<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Piccolomini sits in the path of the escarpment, a younger crater estimated to be 3.2\u20133.8 billion years of age that has stamped itself onto the southern extremity of Rupes Altai, bringing the escarpment\u2019s path to a distinct and abrupt end.\u00a0<\/p><p>The northern extremity is less well defined and peters out as it heads past Catharina.<\/p><p>Under oblique lighting, some of the features here appear to give the escarpment an extended lease of life.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1143\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/08\/Mare-Nectaris-6c3d802.jpg\" alt=\"An annotated diagram of Mare Nectaris.\" class=\"wp-image-98818\"\/><\/figure><p>But while the northern part of Rupes Altai would naturally seem to continue north past 98km <strong>Cyrillus<\/strong> and 101km <strong>Theophilus<\/strong>, where it actually ends isn\u2019t completely clear.<\/p><p>This part of the Moon\u2019s surface is heavily cratered. The mid-section is flanked by two particularly complex, messy regions.<\/p><p>To the southwest is 45km <strong>Pons<\/strong>, overlaid by myriad smaller craterlets.<\/p><p>To the northeast is 41km <strong>Polybius<\/strong>, which is fairly cleanly presented compared to Pons.<\/p><p>But the region immediately to the west \u2013 which includes 28km <strong>Polybius C <\/strong>and 22km <strong>Polybius F<\/strong> \u2013 is rather mixed up. Bringing more order to the north of Pons are 40km <strong>Fermat<\/strong> and 17km <strong>Fermat A<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p><p>One must-see feature that starts at the northern end of Rupes Altai and heads northwest is the magnificent crater chain <strong>Catena Abulfeda<\/strong>.<\/p><p>This stretches for at least 230km across the lunar surface and consists of mostly sub-10km craters, the exception being 16km <strong>Almanon C<\/strong>.<\/p><p><strong><em>Have you observed or photographed Rupes Altai?
