{"id":58968,"date":"2024-05-13T11:43:40","date_gmt":"2024-05-13T11:43:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dfa6b70c-56a5-4500-bb2d-3dc4d38866ee"},"modified":"2024-05-13T12:08:24","modified_gmt":"2024-05-13T12:08:24","slug":"beautiful-x-ray-image-shows-vent-channelling-material-away-from-the-supermassive-black-hole-at-the-centre-of-our-galaxy","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcskyatnight\/rss_feed\/beautiful-x-ray-image-shows-vent-channelling-material-away-from-the-supermassive-black-hole-at-the-centre-of-our-galaxy\/","title":{"rendered":"Beautiful x-ray image shows vent channelling material away from the supermassive black hole at the centre of our Galaxy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Staggeringly beautiful image reveals the chaos at the centre of our Galaxy. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Iain Todd\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Monday, 13 May 2024 at 11:43 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>Spectacular images captured by a duo of telescopes show how hot gas is being funnelled away from the supermassive black hole at the centre of our galaxy.<\/p><p>Astronomers describe an &#8220;exhaust vent&#8221; thats channeling this hot gas, connected to a chimney-like structure perpendicular to the plane of our galactic home, the Milky Way.<\/p><p>The images and data show how the supermassive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/black-hole\">black hole<\/a> at the galactic centre, known as Sagittarius A*, is both swallowing cosmic material and blasting it outwards into space.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Quick Look: NASA's Chandra Notices the Galactic Center is Venting\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ahk3DimMTaA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-black-holes-as-bright-energetic-objects\"><strong>Black holes as bright, energetic objects<\/strong><\/h2><p>Black holes have name for being dark, dense objects from which nothing &#8211; not even light &#8211; can escape, but in fact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/black-hole-give-off-light\">black holes can be some of the brightest objects in the Universe<\/a>.<\/p><p>Astronomers calculate that most major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-galaxies\">galaxies<\/a> we know of have a supermassive black hole at their centre, and the process of material falling inwards generates enormous energy, causing these cosmic behemoths to appear as bright galactic cores.<\/p><p>The so-called &#8216;chimney&#8217; releasing hot gas from a region around the supermassive black hole at the centre of our galaxy was previously known, and appears in this composite image captured in x-ray\u00a0by\u00a0NASA\u2019s Chandra X-ray Observatory\u00a0(blue) and radio\u00a0data by the MeerKAT telescope (red).<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full has-lightbox\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image of the region near the centre of the Milky Way galaxy showing the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A*, a chimney and a vent funnelling cosmic material outwards.
