Credit: NASA\/SDO<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">Predicting coronal mass ejection strikes is vital to our connected world, so clearly we need to know more about them, and this is why solar science and the study of space weather is so important.<\/p><p>Recent news, for example, revealed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/solar-storms-cause-train-delays\/\">solar storms could cause train delays<\/a>.<\/p><p>To find out more, we spoke to Ravindra Desai, a scientist at the <a href=\"https:\/\/warwick.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Warwick<\/a> whose research focuses on how extreme <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/space-weather-met-office-predicting-solar-phenomena\/\">space weather<\/a> events occur and how we can better predict them.<\/p><p><em><strong>More solar science: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/questions-about-sun-answered\/\">Big Questions about the Sun &#8211; Answered!<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/solar-missions-scientists-study-sun\/\">How scientists study the Sun<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/11\/Ravindra-Desai-university-warwick-82a22a5.jpg\" alt=\"Ravindra Desai, a scientist at the University of Warwick\" class=\"wp-image-114164\"\/><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-what-causes-coronal-mass-ejections\"><b>What causes coronal mass ejections? <\/b><\/h2><p class=\"p2\">Coronal mass ejections periodically erupt from the solar surface, triggered by unstable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/what-are-magnetic-fields-how-do-they-affect-universe\/\">magnetic field<\/a> conditions.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">Their occurrence varies over an 11-year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/understanding-sun-science-solar-cycle\/\">solar cycle<\/a> of increasing and decreasing activity. They can reach a peak of over 10 CMEs per day during solar maximum.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">The next solar maximum will be in around 2025 or 2026.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading p2\" id=\"h-are-coronal-mass-ejections-dangerous\"><b>Are coronal mass ejections dangerous?<\/b><\/h2><p class=\"p2\">When coronal mass ejections impact Earth, entire radiation belts, which are zones of energetic particles surrounding our planet, can be rapidly destroyed or lost.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">My research looks at how to model this process using supercomputers and aims to use these models to aid in forecasting and mitigating these extreme events.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"955\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/04\/STEREO-solar-storm-eruption-image-a2ea667.jpg\" alt=\"A coronal mass ejection capture by NASA's STEREO spacecraft on 7 October 2012. Credit: NASA\/STEREO<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-how-much-of-a-risk-do-they-pose-to-us\"><b>How much of a risk do they pose to us?<\/b><\/h3><p class=\"p2\">In 1859, a series of fast coronal mass ejections struck Earth during a solar storm now known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/scijinks.gov\/what-was-the-carrington-event\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carrington Event<\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">This triggered aurorae as far south as Cuba and Columbia, wreaking havoc with the world\u2019s telegraph systems at the time.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">If such an event occurred today it would cause widespread power outages and loss of satellite services affecting communications, financial transactions, traffic management and more.<\/p><p>It could cost the world\u2019s economy trillions of dollars.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">In fact, an event thought to be comparable to the Carrington Event occurred in 2012, but narrowly missed Earth by two weeks.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">More recently, in February 2022 a solar storm disabled 40 of SpaceX\u2019s Starlink satellites.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1282\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/11\/Coronal_Mass_ejections-88efe82-e1573820632859.jpg\" alt=\"Coronal mass ejections captured by NASA's Solar Dynamic Observatory in June 2013. Credit: NASA\/SDO<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-how-do-you-simulate-extreme-space-weather\"><b>How do you simulate extreme space weather?<\/b><\/h2><p class=\"p2\">I use high-performance computing simulations, which themselves are rapidly increasing our capability to solve complex differential equations that describe the Sun\u2013Earth system.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">I\u2019m also using data from the latest satellite missions \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/solar-orbiter-perihelion-images-sun\/\">Solar Orbiter<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/parker-solar-probes-journey-to-the-sun\/\">Parker Solar Probe<\/a> \u2013 and will be using instruments on board the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/nasa-lunar-gateway\/\">Lunar Gateway<\/a> Space Station, which is set to be humanity\u2019s first space station in lunar orbit.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">The instrument suites on board the Gateway will feature radiation detectors both inside and outside to measure the ambient radiation environment, how the Gateway structures will shield astronauts from radiation and what the biological effects of different types of radiation are at different locations within the station.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/07\/solar-orbiter-parker-solar-probe-2a13135.jpg\" alt=\"Solar Orbiter and the Parker Solar Probe. Credit: ESA\/ATG medialab; NASA\/Johns Hopkins APL<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-will-simulations-improve-space-weather-forecasting\"><strong>Will simulations improve space weather forecasting?<\/strong><\/h3><p class=\"p2\">I\u2019m working closely with the UK Met Office, which is one of three centres worldwide producing 24-hour space weather forecasts, and my current project is delivering some results from our model to help them forecast extreme events.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-how-are-exoplanets-are-subjected-to-extreme-weather\"><strong>How are exoplanets are subjected to extreme weather?<\/strong><\/h3><p class=\"p2\">In recent years, thousands of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/exoplanets\/\">exoplanets<\/a> have been discovered orbiting other stars.
