NASA spacecraft captured bursts on the Sun in the run-up to the aurora display (video)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"> <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Iain Todd\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Tuesday, 14 May 2024 at 08:18 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>We&#8217;ll be talking about the &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/aurora-10-may-2024\">great aurora of 10 May 2024<\/a>&#8216; for years to come, and it&#8217;s likely to live long in the memory of all who witnessed it.<\/p><p>The powerful geomegnetic storm that manifested itself as an amazing display of Northern Lights seen across the world last weekend is one symptom of the increase in solar activity we&#8217;re seeing as the Sun reaches the peak of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/understanding-sun-science-solar-cycle\">Solar Cycle<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A Week of Rapid-Fire Solar Flares\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xfpOh7OdzyE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>Activity on the Sun in the form of coronal mass ejections, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/sun\/sunspots\">sunspots<\/a> and solar flares peaks and troughs in an 11-year cycle called the Solar Cycle, and our Sun is currently reaching the peak of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/new-solar-cycle-begun\">Solar Cycle 25<\/a>.<\/p><p>NASA says that from 3 May to 9 May 2024, its Earth-orbiting Solar Dynamics Observatory observed 82 notable solar flares.<\/p><p>These flares mostly came from two active regions on the Sun named AR 13663 and AR 13664.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Solar flares on the Sun captured by NASA&#8217;s Solar Dynamics Observatory, 12 May 2024. Credit: NASA\/SDO<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>And NASA released the video above to show a series of flares captured in the run-up to 10 May 2024 that meet some of the most intense classifications.<\/p><p>All flares in the video are M5 or higher, nine of them categorised as X-class solar flares.<\/p><p>Solar flares are categorised in B, C, M, and X classes, with X being the most intense.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-solar-flares-explained\"><strong>Solar flares explained<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/05\/may-2024-solar-flares-nasa-1024x512.jpg?fit=800%2C400\" alt=\"Solar flares on the Sun captured by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, 10, 11 May 2024. Credit: NASA\/SDO<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>A solar flare is an intense burst of radiation or light emanating from the Sun, and is one of the most powerful explosive events that can occur in the Solar System.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/how-take-light-from-sun-reach-earth\">Light takes 8 minutes to travel from our Sun to Earth<\/a>, and that means it takes just 8 minutes for the powerful energy from a solar flare to hit our planet.<\/p><p>However, Earth&#8217;s protective atmosphere means solar flares are not directly dangerous for those of us living on the ground.<\/p><p>But they can be harmful to astronauts beyond the atmosphere and communications technology.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"840\" height=\"472\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/05\/May-7-8-2024-SDO-131-Dual-Active-Regions-bigger.gif\" alt=\"NASA videos of two strong solar flares, one occurring at 01:41 UTC on 8 May (right) and the other at 05:09 on 9 May (left).
