Leo is one of the top constellations in the springtime sky"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Celebrate Leo&#8217;s favourable position in our springtime night skies by getting out your telescope and taking our galactic tour of the constellation. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Thursday, 16 May 2024 at 12:59 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>If you look halfway up in the sky above the south-western horizon as twilight ends during springtime, you will see Leo, probably the major spring constellation for northern hemisphere observers.<\/p><p>Here we&#8217;ll look at what makes Leo such a beautiful constellation, worthy of our attention.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"\/><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-easy-to-see\"><strong>Easy to see<\/strong><\/h2><p>Covering some 947 square degrees, Leo is the 12<sup>th<\/sup> largest constellation in the sky.<\/p><p>Four of its nine brightest stars are 1<sup>st<\/sup> or 2nd magnitude, making it easy for beginners to find when they are starting to learn the sky.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-sickle\"><strong>The Sickle<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/01\/sickle-asterism-6c273bf.jpg\" alt=\"The Sickle asterism in the constellation Leo. Credit: CEDIC Team Hubl Bernard \/ CCDGuide.com<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Sandwiched between the less conspicuous constellations of Virgo to its east and Cancer to its west, the constellation Leo is immediately recognisable because it contains one of the most famous and most obvious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/constellations-asterisms-what-difference\/\">asterisms<\/a> in the whole of the night sky.<\/p><p>A back-to-front question mark of six bright stars, known throughout the ages as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/sickle-asterism\">The Sickle<\/a>.<\/p><p>If you do not know what a sickle is, a sickle is an old agricultural, cutting tool with a wickedly-sharp blade, used for cutting crops.<\/p><p>However, sickles are seen so rarely these days \u2013 unless you are catching up on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b07pn8mz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Poldark<\/a> \u2013 that most people see a fish hook, or the hook of a coat hanger, or even the hooked artificial hand of Captain Hook.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mythology\"><strong>Mythology<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/02\/GettyImages-1204260455-1024x724.jpg?fit=800%2C566\" alt=\"Hercules fighting the Nemean lion. Credit: rudall30 \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Astronomers know, of course, that this pattern of stars is supposed to represent the front of a reclining, noble lion, because the constellation Leo is named after the Nemean lion killed by the hero Hercules in Greek mythology.<\/p><p>Killing the fearsome creature was one of Hercules\u2019s 12 labours, along with slaying the monstrous Hydra and, rather less challengingly, cleaning out the Augean stables.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-regulus-and-denebola\"><strong>Regulus and Denebola<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1784\" height=\"1104\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/04\/regulus-star-leo-8de48fc.jpg\" alt=\"A chart showing the position of star Regulus in Leo\" class=\"wp-image-107873\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Leo&#8217;s brightest star, magnitude 1.34 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/regulus\">Regulus<\/a>, is the 21st brightest star in the sky.<\/p><p>A class B8 blue giant star, it lies 77 light years from Earth and its name means &#8216;The Little King&#8217;.<\/p><p> At the very other end of the constellation, marking the lion\u2019s tail, Leo\u2019s second brightest star, Denebola, &#8216;The Tail of the Lion&#8217;, is a class A3 star some 36 lightyears away.<\/p><p>It is a young star, around only 400 million years old, which, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/vega\">Vega<\/a> and Beta Pictoris, has been found to have a disc of cool dust swirling around it &#8211; a solar system in the making.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-leo-galaxies\"><strong>Leo galaxies<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1090\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/08\/09_JaredBowens_LeoTriplet-40b0a2d.jpg\" alt=\"The Leo Triplet, Jared Bowens, Clarksdale, Missouri, USA, 27 March\u201323 April 2021. Equipment: Canon 60D DSLR, Orion 8\u201d Newtonian astrograph, Celestron AVX mount<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Leo contains five Messier objects, M65, M66, M95, M96 and M 105, all of which are galaxies.<\/p><p>Together with NGC 3628, M65 and M66 form the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/galaxies\/leo-triplet\">Leo Triplet,<\/a> a tight mini-cluster of three reasonably bright galaxies which is hugely popular with observers and astrophotographers alike.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-leonid-meteor-shower\"><strong>Leonid meteor shower<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"665\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/11\/GettyImages-1137463179-4f09e3b-e1666872755837.jpg\" alt=\"The Leonid meteor shower as seen from Lampang Thailand. Credit: NirutiStock \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The constellation Leo is also the area of the sky in which you&#8217;ll see one of the most popular meteor showers, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/leonid-meteor-shower-when-how-see\">Leonid meteor shower<\/a>.<\/p><p>Mid-November every year meteors, or shooting stars, appear to zip out of the hook of the Sickle.<\/p><p>These are caused by dusty grains shaken from the icy nucleus of comet Tempel-Tuttle burning up in Earth\u2019s atmosphere.<\/p><p>Most years the Leonids is a quite modest shower, with a peak of around only 10-15\/hr, but every 33 years or so the shower turns into a storm, producing thousands of meteors.<\/p><p>This last happened in 1999-2001, when 3000 meteors per hour were seen for a short time, many of them stunningly-bright fireballs.<\/p><p>But this was a poor show compared to the Great Leonid Meteor Storm of 1833, when an estimated 100,000 meteors per hour rained from the sky.<\/p><p>Will we see another storm in a decade\u2019s time? We\u2019ll have to cross our fingers and wait and see.<\/p><p>Either way, if you&#8217;re stargazing on a spring evening, Leo is well worth a look.<\/p><p><strong><em>What are your favourite targets in the Leo constellation?
