It&#8217;s a galaxy 500 million lightyears away firing out jets at nearly the speed of light."},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">This isn&#8217;t a TIE Fighter, but an active galaxy 500 million lightyears away propelling out jets at nearly the speed of light. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Iain Todd\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Monday, 20 May 2024 at 14:42 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>Ever seen a galaxy that looks like a TIE Fighter?<\/p><p>TXS 0128 an active <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-galaxies\">galaxy<\/a> propelling out jets of cosmic material that makes it look rather like a TIE fighter, as seen in the Star Wars films.<\/p><p>Galaxy TXS 0128 is located 500 million lightyears away and is anchored by a central supermassive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/black-hole\">black hole<\/a> that&#8217;s about 1 billion times the Sun&#8217;s mass.<\/p><p>Astronomers used the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Very Long Baseline Array to observe the galaxy, the latter being used to produce this incredible image, which was released in 2020.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full has-lightbox\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Active galaxy TXS 0128. Image credit:\u00a0Lister, et al.; Sophia Dagnello, NRAO\/AUI\/NSF<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-it-looks-like-a-tie-fighter\"><strong>Why it looks like a TIE Fighter<\/strong><\/h2><p>TXS 0128 is an active galaxy, which means that all the stars within that galaxy can&#8217;t account for the amount of light being emitted.<\/p><p>Astronomers theorise that this extra emission is a result of swirling gas and dust being heated up by gravitational and frictional forces around its central supermassive black hole.<\/p><p>About 10% of active galaxies produce powerful jets that blast out into space. These jets of high-energy particles travel at nearly the speed of light in opposite directions.<\/p><p>Often, the jets collide with intergalactic gas, which causes the particles to slow down, and the material begins to flow back towards the centre of the galaxy.<\/p><p>This motion produces the lobe effects seen here.
