Could it be older even than the planet itself?<\/p><p>A team of astronomers say they&#8217;ve found the &#8220;missing link&#8221; that shows how water is delivered from gaseous star-forming regions in space to planets like Earth.<\/p><p>The research suggests that Earth&#8217;s water is even older than the Sun.<\/p><p>The news comes as a result of studies of a dusty planet-forming disc surrounding a star 1,300 lightyears from Earth<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Did comets bring water to Earth? It&#8217;s a question that many of us may have pondered ourselves.<\/p><p>We now know that, in its ancient history, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/evidence-of-liquid-water-on-mars\/\">Mars was a much warmer, wetter planet<\/a>, and icy moons like Saturn&#8217;s Enceladus and Jupiter&#8217;s Europa are known to host subsurface oceans that could provide conditions suitable for life.<\/p><p>But where does water in the Solar System come from? How does a planet or other celestial body acquire water?<\/p><p>Astronomers using the Atacama Large Millimeter\/submillimeter Array (ALMA) telescope in Chile have been studying star V883 Orionis.<\/p><p>In particular, they&#8217;ve been looking at the disc of cosmic gas and dust that surrounds the star.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"1434\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/03\/ALMA-disc-V883-Orionis--fa239f0.jpeg\" alt=\"ALMA images of the disc around star V883 Orionis, showing distribution of water (left, orange), dust (middle, green) and carbon monoxide (blue, right). Saxton (NRAO\/AUI\/NSF)<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Just as was the case with our own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/sun\/solar-disc\/\">Sun<\/a> in its infancy, a newly-formed star has a dusty disc of material in orbit around it.<\/p><p>Over time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/what-is-gravity-facts-about-force\/\">gravity<\/a> causes the surrounding material to coalesce and form larger and larger structures, which eventually grow into planets orbiting the star, just like Earth and the other bodies that orbit our Sun.<\/p><p>The team, led by astronomer John J. Tobin from the <a href=\"https:\/\/public.nrao.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Radio Astronomy Observatory<\/a> in the USA, used ALMA to study the planet-forming disc around V883 Orionis, 1,300 lightyears away from Earth.<\/p><p>They were able to measure chemical signatures of water present in the disc and its path from star-forming cloud to planets.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/03\/gas-cloud-star-disc-planets-3192324.jpeg\" alt=\"Illustration showing how a gas cloud collapses to form a star with a disc around it, out of which a planetary system will eventually form. Cal\u00e7ada<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Whereas the water that we most commonly know of on Earth consists of 1 oxygen and 2 hydrogen atoms, in this latest study the team analysed a heavier version of water in which one of the hydrogen atoms is replaced with deuterium, a heavy isotope of hydrogen.<\/p><p>And because &#8216;simple&#8217; water and &#8216;heavy&#8217; water form under different conditions, the team were able to use the water&#8217;s ratio to discover when and where that water was formed.<\/p><p>For example, previous studies of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-comets\/\">comets<\/a> have found they contain a ratio similar to the water on Earth, leading to the suggestion that comets may have delivered water to our planet.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"530\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/04\/Rosetta-Comet-82e666a.jpg\" alt=\"The surface of Comet 67P\/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. says Tobin.<\/p><p>&#8220;This is confirmation of the idea that the water in planetary systems formed billions of years ago, before the Sun, in interstellar space, and has been inherited by both comets and Earth, relatively unchanged.<\/p><p>&#8220;We can now trace the origins of water in our Solar System to before the formation of the Sun.&#8221;<\/p><p>Observing the water turned out to be a challenge, as you might expect of attempting to study the chemical makeup of a substance orbiting a star 1,300 lightyears away.<\/p><p>&#8220;Most of the water in planet-forming discs is frozen out as ice, so it\u2019s usually hidden from our view,&#8221; says study co-author Margot Leemker, a PhD student at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universiteitleiden.nl\/en\/science\/astronomy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leiden Observatory<\/a> in the Netherlands.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Missing Link for Water in the Solar System (ESOcast 258 Light)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4tZgI-gLzL0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
