Credit: MARTIN BERNETTI\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Easter Island saw a total solar eclipse on July 11, 2010.<\/p><p>Just over 14 years later, it&#8217;s set to experience another dramatic solar eclipse, this time an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/annular-solar-eclipse\">annular solar eclipse<\/a> or &#8216;ring of fire.&#8217; It will be its last for 300 years.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Witnessing a &#8216;ring of fire&#8217; hanging above the Easter Island&#8217;s moai is arguably the main attraction of this eclipse, but it&#8217;s also going to be visible from across the Pacific Ocean, southern Chile and southern Argentina.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-october-2024-solar-eclipse-explained\"><strong>October 2024 solar eclipse explained<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/12\/12.AnnularEclipse_ChiragBachani-1024x1024.jpg?fit=800%2C800\" alt=\"Annular solar eclipse Chirag Bachani, San Antonio, Texas, USA, 14 October 2023 Equipment: Canon R6 mirrorless camera, Canon 800mm f\/11 lens, solar filter\" class=\"wp-image-144191\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Annular solar eclipse captured by Chirag Bachani, San Antonio, Texas, USA, 14 October 2023<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon crosses in front of the Sun and its apparent size in the sky is not quite enough to cover the Sun\u2019s disk.<\/p><p>On October 2, 2024 about 93% of the Sun will be eclipsed by the Moon, causing a &#8216;ring of fire&#8217; to be visible for a maximum of 7 minutes 25 seconds.<\/p><p>Unlike during the totality period of a total solar eclipse, the entirety of an annular solar eclipse must be viewed through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/top-astronomy-kit\/best-solar-eclipse-glasses\">solar eclipse glasses<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/top-astronomy-kit\/best-solar-telescopes\">solar telescopes<\/a>.<\/p><p>On either side of annularity, it\u2019s possible to see phenomena such as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baily%27s_beads\">Baily&#8217;s beads<\/a>, the last and first drops of sunlight.<\/p><p>The closer you are to the edge of the path, the longer these beads last for (up to a few minutes at the extremes), but the shorter the duration of the &#8216;ring of fire&#8217;.<\/p><p>So, eclipse-chasers must make a choice.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/05\/puerto-san-julian-argentina-1024x668.jpg?fit=800%2C522\" alt=\"Puerto San Juli\u00e1n on the coast of Santa Cruz province, Argentina, will see the full annular solar eclipse on October 2, 2024. Credit: Candela Monde \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-weather-for-the-october-2-eclipse\"><strong>Weather for the October 2 eclipse<\/strong><\/h2><p>The likelihood of clear skies is highest on the Argentinean coast, though Easter Island will likely have only patchy cloud, according to eclipse climatologist Jay Anderson on <a href=\"https:\/\/eclipsophile.com\/annular-solar-eclipse-october-2-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eclipsophile<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><p>Either way, this is an exclusive eclipse, with a roughly 165-mile (266-kilometre) wide path of annularity crossing just 175,000 people, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/eclipse\/solar\/2024-october-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Timeanddate<\/a>, which also provides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/eclipse\/map\/2024-october-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an excellent map<\/a>.<\/p><p>Although the &#8216;ring of fire&#8217; will only be seen from Easter Island, Chile and Argentina, all of South America and much of Antarctica will see a partial solar eclipse.<\/p><p>The Falkland Islands will see an 84% partial solar eclipse,\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>South Georgia Island 76%, Santiago in Chile 44%, Buenos Aires in Argentina 42% and Elephant Island in Antarctica 56%.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"726\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/GettyImages-1153326067-8bb8326.jpg\" alt=\"Eclipse glasses at the ready!
