A guide to all the solar and lunar eclipses in 2024 and beyond"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Find out when the next solar and lunar eclipses are occurring, and where you can see them. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 22 May 2024 at 11:11 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>Following the April 8 2024 solar eclipse that was visible across North America, many are wondering when the next eclipse is occurring, and whether it will be visible from their location.<\/p><p>The next will be the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/annular-solar-eclipse-october-2-2024\">annular solar eclipse over Easter Island, Argentina and Chile on October 2, 2024<\/a>.<\/p><p>It will pass through much of South America, the Pacific, the Atlantic and Antarctica.<\/p><p>A partial eclipse will be visible for many, but the only countries where the whole ring of fire will be visible are Argentina and Chile, including Easter Island.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How to safely view a solar eclipse\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XaPEkdsdUsY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Recent solar eclipses<\/strong><\/h2><p>It&#8217;s been a great time for solar eclipses.<\/p><p>The April 8 event followed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/partial-lunar-eclipse-28-october-2023\">28 October 2023 partial lunar<\/a> visible for the UK and all of continental Europe, as well as the Middle East, most of Africa and Asia.<\/p><p>And it followed the October 14 2023 annular that was visible in North America and South America.<\/p><p>The next total solar eclipse visible from the contiguous USA occurs on August 23 2044.<\/p><p>Luckily astronomers know exactly when and where eclipses will be taking place, and which parts of the world will get the best views.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Map showing the path of the April 8 total solar eclipse. Credit: BBC Sky at Night Magazine \/ Paul Wootton<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Here we&#8217;ll look at all the eclipses that will be visible in 2024, including how to get the best views and what you can expect to see.<\/p><p>This is everything you need to know about when, where and for how long each <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/sun\/solar-eclipses\/\">solar eclipse<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/moon\/lunar-eclipses\/\">lunar eclipse<\/a> will occur over the coming years.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-next-solar-and-lunar-eclipses-in-2024\"><strong>Next solar and lunar eclipses in 2024<\/strong><\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-october-2024-easter-island-amp-chile\"><strong>2 October 2024: Easter Island &amp; Chile<\/strong><\/h3><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-type-annular-solar-eclipse\"><strong>Type: Annular Solar Eclipse<\/strong><\/h4><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"531\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/03\/10-c070069.jpg\" alt=\"A Ring of Fire crosses Easter Island in 2024. Credit: Easter Island Travel<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Greatest eclipse for the 2 October 2024 annular occurs at 18:45 UTC.<\/p><p>Although this is also visible in Patagonia on southern Chile&#8217;s Pacific coast, this Ring of Fire would be best enjoyed among the monoliths of Easter Island.<\/p><p>This South Pacific island, over 2,000 miles from mainland South America, has an astronomical allure all of its own.<\/p><p>Huge stone statues known as Moai face inland from every beach, and are said to stare at the stars.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-14-march-2025\"><strong>14 March 2025<\/strong><\/h3><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-type-total-lunar-eclipse\"><strong>Type: Total Lunar Eclipse<\/strong><\/h4><p>An hour-long \u2018Blood Moon\u2019 will be visible to all in the U.S. and Canada, and South America. The west coast of North Africa will receive a glimpse of an eclipsed moonset and the west coast of Australia will see an eclipsed moonrise.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-29-march-2025-the-uk-and-europe\"><strong>29 March 2025: the UK and Europe<\/strong><\/h3><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-type-partial-solar-eclipse\"><strong>Type: Partial Solar Eclipse<\/strong><\/h4><p>As much as 47% of the Sun will be blocked by the Moon from the U.K. during this event. It will be visible most easily in Europe, though extreme southeastern Atlantic Canada will be able to try for an 84% eclipsed sunrise.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-september-2025\"><strong>7 September 2025<\/strong><\/h3><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-type-total-lunar-eclipse-0\"><strong>Type: Total Lunar Eclipse<\/strong><\/h4><p>A 1 hour 22 minute lunar totality will be on show to Africa, India, China and Australia as the entire Indian Ocean gets its decade-best view of a \u2018Blood Moon\u2019.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-21-september-2025-new-zealand\"><strong>21 September 2025: New Zealand<\/strong><\/h3><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-type-partial-solar-eclipse-0\"><strong>Type: Partial Solar Eclipse<\/strong><\/h4><p>An eclipsed sunrise that sees about 72% of the Sun blocked by the Moon is going to be visible from New Zealand \u2013 and that\u2019s it!<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-17-february-2026-southern-chile\"><strong>17 February 2026: Southern Chile<\/strong><\/h3><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-type-annular-solar-eclipse-0\"><strong>Type: Annular Solar Eclipse<\/strong><\/h4><p>About 96% of the Sun\u2019s center will be obscured for just 2 minutes 20 seconds, but only to a remote part of Antarctica. Southern Chile will get the merest of partial solar eclipses. This will be almost exclusively for penguins and whales.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-march-2026\"><strong>3 March 2026<\/strong><\/h3><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-type-total-lunar-eclipse-1\"><strong>Type: Total Lunar Eclipse<\/strong><\/h4><p>About 58 minutes of lunar totality will be observable from the U.S., Australia and East Asia, though since the Moon\u2019s southern limb only just makes it inside Earth\u2019s shadow, our satellite may remain fairly bright.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-12-august-2026-iceland-and-spain\"><strong>12 August 2026: Iceland and Spain<\/strong><\/h3><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-type-total-solar-eclipse\"><strong>Type: Total Solar Eclipse<\/strong><\/h4><p>A sky full of auroras during totality in Iceland!? That is very unlikely. More probable is that the \u2018Land of Fire and Ice\u2019 will be clouded-out. However, while a 2 minutes 10 seconds totality will occur 25\u00ba above the horizon from Iceland\u2019s Sn\u00e6fellsnes peninsula, in northern Spain it will be just 10\u00ba up, and decreasing to a risky eclipsed sunset from Majorca. Photo by Robertus Pudyanto\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Observing a solar eclipse is a beautiful, memorable experience, but as with all solar observing, care must be taken.<\/p><p>Looking directly at the Sun with the naked eye will damage your eyesight, but there are ways to observe safely.<\/p><p>Projection is a great method, and involves indirectly observing the Sun by projecting its image onto a screen.<\/p><p>This isn&#8217;t as difficult and can be done with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/make-a-solar-projection-screen\/\">projection screen<\/a> or a colander and a piece of paper!<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"708\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/05\/GettyImages-836325416-bf108a6.jpg\" alt=\"A regular kitchen colander can be used to project an eclipse onto a piece of white paper or card.
