Here are some of its many dark-sky sites and observatories. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Guillaume Doyen\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 29 May 2024 at 09:03 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>Chile is one of the best places on Earth for stargazing, practical astronomy and observing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/what-is-the-milky-way\/\">the Milky Way<\/a>, with plenty of dark-sky sites primed for wonderful views of the night sky.<\/p><p>The country is a premium destination for both amateur and professional astronomers, as well as tourists who love to admire the jewels of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/southern-hemisphere-cheat-sheet\/\">southern hemisphere night sky<\/a>.<\/p><p>It might be best-known among astronomy circles for the Atacama Desert, site of the European Southern Observatory&#8217;s Very Large Telescope and ALMA array.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Antennas of the Atacama Large Millimeter\/submillimeter Array (ALMA), on the Chajnantor Plateau in the Chilean Andes. Malin (christophmalin.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>And the reasons that increasing numbers of astronomers and stargazers are seeking out dark-sky sites in places like Chile is obvious, if you&#8217;ve spent many a night observing from a town or city.<\/p><p>Many of us find urban areas in our own regions are dramatically increasing, and finding dark-sky locations has never been more tricky.<\/p><p>Among the biggest issues are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/light-pollution-astronomy\">light pollution<\/a> hiding the sight of the Milky Way in our night skies, and air humidity that causes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/why-do-stars-twinkle\">stars to twinkle<\/a>.<\/p><p>Many regions in Chile do not have these problems, and if they do, they exist on a smaller scale.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/03\/chile-stargazing-atacama-1024x683.jpg?fit=800%2C534\" alt=\"The Atacama Desert is one of the best places for stargazing in Chile. north of Santiago and 80km east of La Serena is the world\u2019s first Dark Sky Sanctuary, named after the Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.darksky.org\/chilean-astronomical-site-becomes-worlds-first-international-dark-sky-sanctuary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Designated as such in August 2015 by the International Dark Sky Association (IDA)<\/a>, the site includes the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy\u2019s (AURA) observatories in Cerro Tololo and Cerro Pachon.<\/p><p>The darkness of the sky and atmospheric stability make it a must-visit place for stargazing.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cochiguaz-valley\"><strong>Cochiguaz Valley<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"529\" people.<\/p><p>It&#8217;s difficult to argue against this description of the region, especially in the Cochiguaz Valley, which is one of the best places to go for stargazing in Chile, and observing the Milky Way in particular.<\/p><p>In the heart of the Chilean Andes, at 2,000m altitude, it is an amazing place during daytime and makes you feel as if you were on another planet.<\/p><p>When night falls, you feel like you have been transported to another world.<\/p><p>Its marvellous sky enables stargazers to admire the shape and the dust gas of the Milky Way (see above image), which appears like a slightly under-exposed monochrome picture.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-salar-de-atacama\"><strong>Salar de Atacama<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"529\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/04\/03-Salar-Atacama-87a9c61.jpg\" alt=\"Salar de Atacama, Chile\" include its most famous astronomical destination: the Atacama desert.<\/p><p>To reach this northern part of the country, 1000km north from La Serena, a flight connection is recommended.<\/p><p>Reams of night spots are located on this vast piece of land and selecting a single one is not easy.<\/p><p>One appropriate place, far enough from nearby towns to avoid light pollution, is a flat area located in the salty part of the desert called the Salar de Atacama.<\/p><p>From there, an unforgettable 360\u00b0 view of the Milky Way will amaze those looking for quiet and dark locations for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/a-beginners-guide-to-astrophotography\">astrophotography<\/a>.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-san-pedro-de-atacama\"><strong>San Pedro de Atacama<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"531\" can also be found around San Pedro De Atacama, the most popular town in the desert.<\/p><p>San Pedro has direct connection to the city of Calama via taxi or shuttle, the trip lasting under an hour.<\/p><p>Although Calama has a population of about 5,000, light pollution remains low once you reach 2km from the centre.<\/p><p>Here you can find lots of accommodation with fantastic views of the night sky.<\/p><p>San Pedro itself also boasts a range of astronomical tours and a lot of observatories worth a visit.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" dedicated to tourists.<\/p><p>It is located in the Coquimbo region, 9km northeast of the city of Vicu\u00f1a in the Elqui Valley.<\/p><p>Settled in a remote dark place at 1,100m altitude, Mamalluca is equipped with a planetarium, a visitors\u2019 hall and eight convenient telescopes for night-time observing, ranging from 12-inch to 16-inch reflectors.<\/p><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.astronomictourism.com\/mamalluca-observatory-tour.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer spending a night stargazing in your hotel is another.<\/p><p>At Alfa Aldea, you can observe and sleep in the same place, making it one of the best hotels for stargazing in Chile.<\/p><p>The establishment is based in the heart of a vineyard, 2km away from the centre of Vicu\u00f1a city and provides astronomical tours in its open-air amphitheater.<\/p><p>The cherry on top is the direct by viewing it through incredible optical instruments.<\/p><p>Atop a 1,450m-high mountain, 17km away from Vicu\u00f1a, the Del Pangue Observatory is highly recommended for advanced observers and astrophotographers, with a range of 16-, 20-, 25- or 28-inch reflectors for use.<\/p><p>The sky quality visible from Pangue Observatory is as amazing as the Atacama desert.<\/p><p>And the site also boasts nearby views of Cerro Tololo and Cerro Pachon observatories.<\/p><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.observatoriodelpangue.blogspot.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer village, 25km from La Serena.<\/p><p>The observatory is notable by its beautiful design, inspired by the country\u2019s indigenous cultures.<\/p><p>Its dome is a one-off creation and its 14-inch-telescope is used for public observing sessions.<\/p><p>The building contains also a large conference room for astronomy talks, although the talks are only held in Spanish.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cielo-sur-observatory\"><strong>Cielo Sur Observatory<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" Alcohuaz.<\/p><p>13km south of the popular town of Pisco Elqui, this tiny village is home to Cielo Sur Observatorio.<\/p><p>Meaning &#8216;the Southern Sky Observatory&#8217; in Spanish, it consists of twin 11-inch telescopes.<\/p><p>Surrounded by the Andes, the area is a good choice for wide-field astrophotographers too.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cielosurobservatorio.cl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>www.cielosurobservatorio.cl<\/strong><\/a><\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-chakana-observatory\"><strong>Chakana Observatory<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"530\" observatory, the Hacienda Los Andes is a well-known remote location for amateur astrophotographers worldwide.<\/p><p>The facility offers not only tremendous astronomical setups available to hire, but also Dobsonian telescopes for visual astronomy.<\/p><p>If you\u2019re looking for a special rendezvous with the Milky Way, this place is ideal.<\/p><p><a Southern Cross constellation.<\/p><p>Four domes equipped with two 16-inch telescopes and two 14-inch telescopes are available for observing.<\/p><p>Located in Combarbal\u00e1 village, this observatory observatory established by ESO, La Silla is located in the Coquimbo region.<\/p><p>154km north of La Serena on the outskirts of the Atacama Desert, it&#8217;s one of the most famous stargazing sites impressive 6.5m twin telescopes.<\/p><p>On 17 August 2017, the 1m Swope Telescope at LCO became the first observatory to view the optical source of a phenomenon that created <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/what-are-gravitational-waves\">gravitational waves<\/a>, when it observed light produced by the collision of two <a
