Comet chaser captures C\/2023 A3, gives his thoughts on naked-eye likelihood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"> <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Iain Todd\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Friday, 31 May 2024 at 06:08 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>It&#8217;s been a great year for comet chasers so far, with the first half of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/comets-2024\">2024 seeing a wealth of bright comets<\/a> visible in the sky.<\/p><p>All eyes are currently on comet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/comet-c-2023-a3-tsuchinshan-atlas\">C\/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS)<\/a>, which is visible in the constellation Virgo as of early June 2024 and moving towards the southern portion of Leo.<\/p><p>It&#8217;s thought the comet could become a naked-eye spectacle in September and October of this year.<\/p><p>But there&#8217;s always a danger that, like C\/2012 S1 (ISON) did in late 2013, it could break up and fizzle out just at the moment it&#8217;s due to reach its brightest.<\/p><p>So how is C\/2023 looking at the moment, and what might we expect from it, come autumn 2024?<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full has-lightbox\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Comet C\/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) captured by Jos\u00e9 J. Chambo is a comet observer and photographer who is well-known to anyone with an interest in spotting and photographing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-comets\">comets<\/a>.<\/p><p>He&#8217;s been tracking and imaging C\/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) over the past few months, keeping an eye on its changing appearance and brightness.<\/p><p>Jos\u00e9 captured the above image on 8 May 2024 from Valencia, Spain.<\/p><p>&#8220;After many cloudy nights, on 8 May I was finally able to image comet C\/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) again in a long series of shots to create a colour image,&#8221; he says.<\/p><p>&#8220;Despite its unchanging appearance, its dust tail continues to appear longer due to our changing perspective from Earth, reaching a length of almost 9 arcminutes in this image.<\/p><p>&#8220;As for its brightness, it remains at magnitude 10.5. Exposure\" min.=\"\" bin1=\"\" rgb=\"1x60\" bin2=\"\" jos=\"\" says:=\"\" comet=\"\" c=\"\" a3=\"\" shows=\"\" a=\"\" brightness=\"\" that=\"\" has=\"\" remained=\"\" at=\"\" magnitude=\"\" the=\"\" same=\"\" as=\"\" i=\"\" recorded=\"\" three=\"\" weeks=\"\" ago.=\"\" however=\"\" angular=\"\" length=\"\" of=\"\" its=\"\" tail=\"\" doubled=\"\" from=\"\" to=\"\" probably=\"\" due=\"\" increase=\"\" in=\"\" phase=\"\" angle=\"\" which=\"\" implies=\"\" we=\"\" now=\"\" observe=\"\" it=\"\" more=\"\" side.=\"\" image=\"\" can=\"\" be=\"\" clearly=\"\" seen=\"\" extending=\"\" left=\"\" with=\"\" bright=\"\" and=\"\" well-defined=\"\" coma.=\"\" this=\"\" pause=\"\" is=\"\" common=\"\" comets=\"\" visiting=\"\" inner=\"\" solar=\"\" system=\"\" for=\"\" first=\"\" time.=\"\" hopefully=\"\" will=\"\" soon=\"\" resume=\"\" brightening=\"\" trend.=\"\" credit:=\"\" j.=\"\" chamb=\"\" class=\"wp-image-156529\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Comet C\/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) captured by Jos\u00e9 J. (L=44&#215;60 bin1 RGB=1&#215;60 bin2)<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>So what does Jos\u00e9 think of the chance that comet C\/2023 A3 will become bright, even naked-eye in autumn 2024?<\/p><p>&#8220;There is a small problem,&#8221; he says.<\/p><p>&#8220;Since mid-April, the comet&#8217;s light curve has stalled, remaining at magnitude 10.5.<\/p><p>&#8220;This kind of pause in activity often happens with new comets coming from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/what-is-the-oort-cloud\">Oort Cloud<\/a> for the first time. <\/p><p>&#8220;Usually, they recover within a few days, but this could negatively affect the maximum brightness C\/2023 A3 reaches in October 2024.<\/p><p>&#8220;The forecast is that it will reach magnitude 0, but at that time, it won&#8217;t be visible from Earth because it will be in conjunction with the Sun.<\/p><p>&#8220;When it reappears in our skies in mid-October, it could be at magnitude 1.
