{"id":59653,"date":"2024-05-31T05:16:55","date_gmt":"2024-05-31T05:16:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/714b365f-aef9-487d-bb8f-e1ed9fe2bdd0"},"modified":"2024-06-03T18:39:41","modified_gmt":"2024-06-03T18:39:41","slug":"webb-discovers-the-most-distant-galaxy-ever-seen-existing-shortly-after-the-big-bang-during-the-cosmic-dawn","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcskyatnight\/rss_feed\/webb-discovers-the-most-distant-galaxy-ever-seen-existing-shortly-after-the-big-bang-during-the-cosmic-dawn\/","title":{"rendered":"Webb discovers the most distant galaxy ever seen, existing shortly after the Big Bang during the Cosmic Dawn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">JADES-GS-z14-0 existed around the time of the Cosmic Dawn. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Iain Todd\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Friday, 31 May 2024 at 05:16 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>The James Webb Space Telescope has observed the most distant galaxy ever seen, named JADES-GS-z14-0, a galaxy that exists just 290 million years after the Big Bang.<\/p><p>The observations are part of a study using Webb to explore the Cosmic Dawn: the period when the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/beginners-guide-stars\">stars<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-galaxies\">galaxies<\/a> were formed after the birth of the Universe.<\/p><p>The Universe is 13.8 billion years old, but because light takes time to travel across space, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/space-night-sky-look-back-in-time\">by peering deep into the cosmos, astronomers can effectively look back in time<\/a>.<\/p><p>The deeper astronomers look into the distant Universe, the further back they can see.<\/p><p>What&#8217;s more, the light that&#8217;s making its way to our telescopes, travelling millions and billions of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/lightyear\">lightyears<\/a> across the Universe, is stretched by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/expansion-universe\">expansion of the Universe<\/a>.<\/p><p>This stretching is known as &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/redshift\">redshift<\/a>&#8216; because the light is stretched to the red end of the spectrum, and this is why Webb &#8211; with its infrared vision &#8211; is so good at detecting very early galaxies.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">James Webb Space Telescope image of JADES-GS-z14-0, a galaxy that existed just 290 million years after the Big Bang. Cargile (CfA)<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-jades-gs-z14-0-was-found\"><strong>How JADES-GS-z14-0 was found<\/strong><\/h2><p>In October 2023 and January 2024, a team of astronomers used the James Webb Space Telescope to observe galaxies as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/webbtelescope.org\/contents\/media\/images\/01GKT0RRJBP5ZMJRMCQNPT8SXP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey<\/a> (JADES) programme.<\/p><p>Webb\u2019s NIRSpec (Near-Infrared Spectrograph) instrument detected the record-breaking galaxy, known as JADES-GS-z14-0.<\/p><p>JADES-GS-z14-0 appears to us as it existed just 290 million years after the Big Bang, when the Universe was in its infancy.<\/p><p>This amounts to a redshift of about 14, the measure of how much the galaxy\u2019s light has been stretched by the expansion of the Universe.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What is redshift in astronomy?\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6L3vDeG8ZP0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>The authors of the study are Stefano Carniani of Scuola Normale Superiore in Italy and Kevin Hainline, an associate research professor at the Steward Observatory, University of Arizona.<\/p><p>&#8220;From the images, the source is found to be over 1,600-light years across, proving that the light we see is coming mostly from young stars and not from emission near a growing supermassive black hole,&#8221; they say in a joint statement.<\/p><p>&#8220;This much starlight implies that the galaxy is several hundreds of millions of times the mass of the Sun.
