Equipment: C8, Qhy5IIL CCD, 2x barlow.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Oppositions are exciting opportunities to see planets in a whole new light.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Opposition occurs when a planet lies directly opposite the Sun, while Earth is nestled in between.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">During opposition season, the full disc of Mars is illuminated by the Sun, granting us the best, most complete surface views.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">Mars can be a fickle planet to capture, its appearance changing drastically depending on its proximity, position and brightness.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-not-all-mars-oppositions-are-the-same\"><strong>Not all Mars oppositions are the same<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"808\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/08\/Mars-apparent-size-829f7d1.jpg\" alt=\"A comparison of Mars\u2019s apparent diameter when at opposition from 2016\u201335. Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">Mars opposition occurs roughly every 26 months and are a great chance to catch this challenging planet\u2019s complex beauty. Not all oppositions are equal, however.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">Both Mars\u2019s and Earth\u2019s orbits are elliptical, and each is gently affected by the gravitational pull of other planets, meaning that oppositions don\u2019t always take place when Mars is as its closest point to us.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">So-called \u2018perihelic oppositions\u2019 \u2013 ones where Mars is extremely close to us \u2013 only happen every 15\u201317 years or so.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">Even then, some perihelic oppositions are exceptional.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"942\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/05\/mars-opposition-2022-2025-5c63c93.jpg\" alt=\"At perihelion, Mars is at the closest point to us in its elliptical orbit. Credit: Paul Wootton<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">For example, Mars opposition in 2003 occurred at the closest approach in almost 60,000 years, and won\u2019t be beaten until 2287!<\/p><p class=\"p2\">In short, any opposition is an opportunity you\u2019ll want to take full advantage of.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">The variations also affect the planet\u2019s apparent magnitude and the angular diameter of its disc. <\/p><p class=\"p2\">At its last opposition in December 2022, Mars reached 17.2 arc\u00adseconds at closest approach, but in 2020 it was 22.6.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">At its next opposition in January 2025, Mars will only reach 14.6 arcseconds.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">2022\u2019s opposition won\u2019t be beaten until 27 June 2033, when the planet\u2019s apparent size increases to 22.1 arcseconds.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-get-the-best-view-of-mars-at-opposition\"><strong>How to get the best view of Mars at opposition<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"890\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/01\/Mars-apparent-sizes-6913291-e1599569577774.jpg\" alt=\"The difference in the apparent size of Mars when it\u2019s at its most favourable opposition and when at its most distant from Earth. Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">Mars can be enjoyed through almost any telescope; even a short, small-aperture refractor reveals details on the red disc.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Adding a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/what-is-a-barlow-lens\/\">Barlow lens<\/a> will increase the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/telescope-focal-length\">focal length<\/a> and magnify the image, allowing you to pick up further details, including dark and light patches (known as albedo features).<\/p><p class=\"p1\">But the ability to magnify is limited by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/what-is-astronomical-seeing\/\">seeing<\/a> conditions: the greater the magnification, the more disruptive atmospheric turbulence is.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">A (very) general rule of thumb for magnification is 20x to 30x per inch of aperture, although in reality it is very much down to the weather on the night.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-best-telescope-for-observing-mars\"><strong>Best telescope for observing Mars<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"800\" cloud structure or the polar caps.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">It\u2019s worth noting that refractors are likely to require high-powered eyepieces in addition to a Barlow lens to get detail, adding more glass, which can end up distorting views or adding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/understanding-optical-aberrations\/\">chromatic aberration<\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">Newtonian reflectors offer longer focal lengths and allow us to get closer.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">Catadioptric tubes, such as Schmidt- and Maksutov-Cassegrains, are longer still and allow the use of lower-powered eyepieces to achieve the same magnification.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-eyepieces-and-filters\"><strong>Eyepieces and filters<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"530\" class=\"p2\">We suggest starting off with a low-powered eyepiece and stepping up to the point where views stop improving.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">In all cases, coloured filters, which tend to screw into the base of an eyepiece, will help to boost surface contrasts.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">An orange filter is a good start as it neutralises the orange disc, allowing dark regions to stand Earth-like with its polar caps, distinct surface details and occasional clouds swarming above.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Its dusty composition, made up of iron and basalt, creates storms that cover the globe, obscuring its features for weeks.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Meanwhile, Mars\u2019s rotation and axial tilt of around 25\u00b0 means that throughout opposition season we can look forward to a variety of different views as the surface appears to shift slowly eastward.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">Keep an eye out for the following disc features, tracking them up to and past opposition: <\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-polar-ice-caps\"><b>Polar ice caps<\/b><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1169\" Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">Mars has seasons much like we do, which affect the size and shape of its polar caps.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Sometimes its tilt means that only one is visible.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">However, it might be possible to see both, depending on the opposition and seeing conditions.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-albedo-features\"><b>Albedo features<\/b><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"773\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/09\/Mars-opposition-4fd2e1a.jpg\" alt=\"Albedo features on Mars. Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">The high plain of exposed volcanic rock known as Syrtis Major is the largest dark area visible on Mars\u2019s disc.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Its V-shaped form should be obvious, but clouds can change the appearance of these darker surface areas, altering their colour or obscuring them.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Free programs such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/stellarium-astronomy-planetarium-software-how-to-use\/\">Stellarium<\/a> will help you plan your observing.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Simply set the date and time and zoom in on Mars to find out which surface features could be visible throughout the night.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\/><\/p><p class=\"p2\">Opposition is a great time to track and record your Mars observations, either in sketches or images. Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">Don\u2019t assume that the day of opposition should be the only date in your diary to view Mars.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">The weeks around opposition will also be a particularly special time to catch the planet.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">Taking time to view it during the week before and the week after opposition should not only allow you to see changes to the disc features, but will also train your eyes as you acclimatise to Mars\u2019s surface.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">It will also give you more chances for a prime viewing night as planetary observing very much depends on the atmospheric conditions here on Earth \u2013 and a clear night doesn\u2019t always equate to good seeing.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">Air humidity, damp, weather fronts and even the jet stream\u2019s relative position to you will have a significant impact on your session.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">If it\u2019s poor one night, stick at it!<\/p><p class=\"p2\">The next evening can be very different and provides a good opportunity to compare any extra details you might see as you get to know the surface.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-photographing-mars\"><strong>Photographing Mars<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1032\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/06\/16_GaborSzendroi_RedAndBlue-4aaa312.jpg\" alt=\"Mars and the Pleiades, photographed by G\u00e1bor Szendr\u0151i, Hungary, 30 March 2019. Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">Opposition season really means we want to capture serious surface detail, so dig out your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/star-tracker-mount-astrophotography\/\">tracking mount<\/a> and longest-focal-length telescope.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">DSLRs can still be used for planetary imaging as long as you can capture video.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">Preferably you would use a planetary camera as these capture higher frame rates, cutting through an unsteady atmosphere and giving a sharper image.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">If using a DSLR, you need a T-ring and adaptor that fits your telescope.
