{"id":60027,"date":"2024-06-08T08:42:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-08T08:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/21ad5206-5307-4b73-91e0-793a0f63c2e4"},"modified":"2024-06-08T09:39:42","modified_gmt":"2024-06-08T09:39:42","slug":"astronomers-have-seen-the-point-at-which-material-is-sucked-into-a-black-hole-for-the-first-time","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcskyatnight\/rss_feed\/astronomers-have-seen-the-point-at-which-material-is-sucked-into-a-black-hole-for-the-first-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Astronomers have seen the point at which material is sucked into a black hole for the first time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"> <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Ezzy Pearson\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Saturday, 08 June 2024 at 08:42 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>For the first time, astronomers have observed the \u2018plunge region\u2019 surrounding a black hole, where orbiting material can no longer resist gravity\u2019s pull and plummets inward.<\/p><p>The region is predicted by Einstein\u2019s theories, but has eluded the gaze of scientists until now.<\/p><p>Most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/black-hole\">black holes<\/a> pull gas from surrounding stars, surrounding themselves with an accretion disc.<\/p><p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/newton-einstein-gravity\">Einstein\u2019s theories of gravity<\/a>, there is a point at which any particle straying too close to a black hole would no longer be able to continue in a circular path.<\/p><p>Instead, it plunges rapidly inwards, towards the event horizon at close to the speed of light.<\/p><p>While matter in this black hole plunge region is doomed to fall inwards, light is still able to escape, meaning it should be possible to observe.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Labelled illustration showing different parts of a black hole.<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-the-discovery-was-made\"><strong>How the discovery was made<\/strong><\/h2><p>Accretion discs create a lot of x-ray radiation, which is why, contrary to what you might think, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/black-hole-give-off-light\">black holes shine extremely brightly<\/a>.<\/p><p>The team used data taken by the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) and Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) X-ray observatories to look for the plunge region.<\/p><p>Focusing on observations of small black holes close to Earth and comparing these to computer models, the team were able to find the first proof of gas impelled over the edge, into a black hole.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/05\/sagittarius-a-black-hole-chimney-vent-social-1024x555.jpg?fit=800%2C434\" alt=\"Image of the region near the centre of the Milky Way galaxy showing the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A*, a chimney and a vent funnelling cosmic material outwards. Wolk<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>&#8220;This is the first look at how plasma, peeled from the outer edge of a star, undergoes its final fall into the centre of a black hole, a process happening in a system around 10,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/lightyear\">lightyears<\/a> away,&#8221; says Andrew Mummery from the University of Oxford, who led the study.<\/p><p>&#8220;Think of it like a river turning into a waterfall \u2013 hitherto, we have been looking at the river.<\/p><p>&#8220;This is our first sight of the waterfall. Along with these new results, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/what-are-gravitational-waves\">gravitational waves<\/a> are telling us about colliding black holes.<\/p><p>The upcoming LISA mission will reveal the mergers of supermassive black holes.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/ultra-low-frequency-gravitational-waves-black-holes\">Pulsar timing experiments<\/a> are probing these events too, while one of the big surprises from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/nasa-james-webb-space-telescope-observe-universe\">James Webb Space Telescope<\/a> is seeing how rapidly black holes grow in the early Universe.<\/p><p>The Event Horizon Team are making movies of the ring of light around the black hole at the centre of our Galaxy and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/supermassive-black-hole-imaged-for-first-time\">black hole of M87<\/a>, and adding new telescopes to their network.<\/p><p>Slowly but surely, we\u2019re glimpsing how black holes behave, in detail never before achieved.
