{"id":60464,"date":"2024-06-24T13:00:47","date_gmt":"2024-06-24T13:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/8a93f3dd-a13d-4479-bab6-6faf96cfd9a5"},"modified":"2024-06-24T13:39:44","modified_gmt":"2024-06-24T13:39:44","slug":"webb-sees-jets-from-newborn-stars-produce-shockwaves-as-they-smash-into-cosmic-gas-and-dust","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcskyatnight\/rss_feed\/webb-sees-jets-from-newborn-stars-produce-shockwaves-as-they-smash-into-cosmic-gas-and-dust\/","title":{"rendered":"Webb sees jets from newborn stars produce shockwaves as they smash into cosmic gas and dust"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">James Webb Space Telescope image of the Serpens Nebula, showing shockwaves caused by jets from new stars colliding with cosmic gas and dust. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Iain Todd\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Monday, 24 June 2024 at 13:00 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>The James Webb Space Telescope has given astronomers their first ever view of jets of gas hurtling outwards from newborn stars and smashing into cosmic gas and dust at high speeds.<\/p><p>The phenomena are seen in a new image of the Serpens Nebula, a young reflection <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/beginners-guide-nebulae\">nebula<\/a> &#8211; just 1 or 2 million years old &#8211; in which new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/beginners-guide-stars\">stars<\/a> are forming.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Serpens Nebula (Annotated)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FWXqDz1fn2A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>Astronomers discovered a group of protostellar outflows, formed as jets shoot out from young stars and collide with cosmic material.<\/p><p>Usually these outflows come in a variety of orientations within one region, but in this case they are all aiming in the same direction, to the same degree.<\/p><p>The discovery is providing new insight into the mechanisms by which stars are born in cosmic clouds.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-star-formation-in-the-serpens-nebula\"><strong>Star formation in the Serpens Nebula<\/strong><\/h2><p>A star is formed when an interstellar gas cloud collapses on itself, due to gravity.<\/p><p>As it does so, it spins more rapidly, and a disc of material forms around the young star, funnelling material into the centre like water going down a plughole.<\/p><p>Swirling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/what-are-magnetic-fields-how-do-they-affect-universe\">magnetic fields<\/a> launch some of the material into twin jets that shoot outwards into space, perpendicular to the rotating disc.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full has-lightbox\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">James Webb Space Telescope NIRCam image of the Serpens Nebula. Green (Space Telescope Science Institute)<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>In this James Webb Space Telescope image of the Serpens Nebula, captured using the NIRCam instrument, the jets are seen as bright red clumpy streaks.<\/p><p>These are shockwaves caused as a jet hits the surrounding gas and dust.<\/p><p>The red colour indicates the presence of molecular hydrogen and carbon monoxide<\/p><p>Webb&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/infrared-astronomy\">infrared<\/a> vision means it can see through the cosmic cloud and get a good look at the young stars and their outflows, which would otherwise be obstructed in optical light.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full has-lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"826\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/06\/webb-serpens-nebula-crop.jpg\" alt=\"Crop of a James Webb Space Telescope NIRCam image of the Serpens Nebula.
