Equipment: Canon 6D DSLR, 50mm lens, tracking mount.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The Teapot asterism is visible low along the horizon during the summer months, but as we approach August and the nights get longer, you might even be able to see &#8216;steam&#8217; rising from the spout.<\/p><p>This &#8216;steam&#8217; is actually the band of the Milky Way arching across the night sky.<\/p><p>If you manage to located both the Teapot and the steam rising from the spout, it&#8217;s an incredibly satisfying combo!<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1416\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/05\/03-Sagittarius-843fd6b-scaled-e1589798367496.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48775\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Can you see the Teapot within Sagittarius? Credit: Stellarium<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-see-star-kaus-meridionalis\"><strong>See star Kaus Meridionalis<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"p1\">The Teapot asterism is formed from a group of stars within Sagittarius, and the star Delta (\u03b4) Sagittarii marks the point where the lid, body and spout are joined.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">It had the traditional name Kaus Meridionalis, which refers more to the mythological interpretation of Sagittarius as a centaur archer than a teapot!<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"933\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/07\/teapot-asterism-kaus-3750395.jpg\" alt=\"The name of star Kaus Media in the Teapot asterism was adopted for Kaus Meridionalis in 2016 by the Astronomical Union. Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">There are three stars in Sagittarius named Kaus:<\/p><ul><li class=\"p2\">Kaus Borealis (Lambda (\u03bb) Sagittarii)<\/li><li class=\"p2\">Kaus Meridionalis<\/li><li class=\"p2\">Kaus Australis (Epsilon (\u03b5) Sagittarii)<\/li><\/ul><p class=\"p2\">The name Kaus means \u2018bow\u2019, the \u2018borealis\u2019, \u2018meridionalis\u2019 and \u2018australis\u2019 means northern, middle and southern.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">In mythology the three stars represent the top, middle and bottom of Sagittarius\u2019s bow.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1684\" height=\"1486\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/03\/Screenshot-2020-03-26-at-14.30.13-65f6591.png\" alt=\"Diagram showing the pattern of the Teapot asterism\" class=\"wp-image-46400\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The teapot asterism. Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">The Bayer order in Sagittarius isn\u2019t logical, with Kaus Australis brightest at mag. +1.8, then Nunki (Sigma (\u03c3) Sagittarii) at mag. +2.0 and Ascella (Zeta (\u03b6) Sagittarii) at mag. +2.6. Kaus Meridonalis shines at mag. +2.7 and for once is well labelled as the delta star, because it\u2019s the fourth brightest in Sagittarius.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">In case you\u2019re wondering, Rukbat (Alpha (\u03b1) Sagittarii) is mag. +3.9, but it\u2019s too far south to be seen from the UK.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">Kaus Meridionalis is an orange-giant star with a spectral type of K3 III and an estimated distance from the Sun of 348 lightyears.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">It\u2019s a binary system, the companion being a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/white-dwarf\">white dwarf<\/a>. The primary is estimated to be 3.2 times more massive than the Sun with a diameter that\u2019s 16 times larger. It is estimated to be 260 million years old.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-deep-sky-objects-to-observe-in-the-teapot-asterism\"><strong>Deep-sky objects to observe in the Teapot asterism<\/strong><\/h2><p>The Teapot is undoubtedly a great naked-eye asterism to see in the summer night sky (and is one of our favourite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/best-summer-constellations\">summer constellations<\/a> and asterisms) but there are some incredible deep-sky objects in its vicinity that are worth observing through a telescope.<\/p><p>Here are 6 of the best deep-sky targets to see in the Teapot. For help locating the objects, download <a href=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/07\/Teapot_asterism_deep_sky-02e5684.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a PDF chart<\/a> that you can use at your telescope.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-targets-in-the-teapot-asterism\"><strong>6 targets in the Teapot asterism<\/strong><\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-m22\"><strong>M22<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"894\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/05\/M22-globular-cluster-ec20bc1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-61867\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Michael \/ CCDGuide.com<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">M22 is a magnificent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/stars\/star-clusters\/globular-clusters\">globular cluster<\/a> located 2.5\u02da northeast of Kaus Borealis (Lambda (\u03bb) Sagittarii), the star at the top of the Teapot asterism\u2019s lid. At mag. +5.1 it is visible to the naked eye, but a telescope brings out its beauty.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">From the UK, M22 is compromised due to its low altitude. A 150mm scope at around 200x magnification reveals many resolved stars across the globular\u2019s core.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">The whole object is around 20 arcminutes across and appears slightly elongated in a southwest\u2013northeast orientation. Larger instruments resolve further stars.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p2\" id=\"h-ngc-6642\"><strong>NGC 6642<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/07\/NGC-6642-fff28ee.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-97520\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: ESA\/Hubble &amp; NASA<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">Globular cluster NGC 6642 sits 1.1\u02da west-northwest of M22\u2019s centre. Locating NGC 6642 isn\u2019t the problem, it\u2019s getting detail that proves tricky. Shining at an integrated magnitude of +7.6, NGC 6642 is tiny. A small scope shows it as a 1 arcminute glow. The glow appears larger and brighter through a 250mm instrument, but without obvious resolution.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">The best you can expect using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/how-to-master-the-art-of-averted-vision\">averted vision<\/a> under dark-sky conditions is subtle mottling. Don\u2019t be fooled by several field stars giving the false impression you\u2019re beginning to resolve NGC 6642. A 300mm scope increases the glow\u2019s size to around 1.5 arcminutes, perhaps hinting at a bit of resolution.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p2\" id=\"h-collinder-394\"><strong>Collinder 394<\/strong><\/h3><p class=\"p2\">This part of the sky is rich with \u2018local\u2019 deep-sky objects found within our own Milky Way. In the direction of Sagittarius, you\u2019re looking towards the Galaxy\u2019s core and the number of faint background stars is high. Locate Collinder 394 by using two stars in the Teaspoon asterism.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">Extend the line from Omicron (\u03bf) Sagittarii to Xi-2 (\u03be<sup>2<\/sup>) Sagittarii by three-quarters of their separation again to arrive in the correct area. A low power is recommended. Quoted as containing as many as 50 stars in a 22-arcminute area, it\u2019s interesting to<\/p><p>view Collinder 394 against its rich background.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ngc-6716\"><strong>NGC 6716<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/07\/NGC6176-7d060eb.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-97522\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: www.sdss.org<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">Our next target sits 56 arcminutes northeast of Collinder 394. Open cluster NGC 6716 has an integrated magnitude of +7.5 and appears well-defined thanks to having the compact size of 10&#215;8 arcminutes. A series of brighter stars gives the cluster a distinctive rectangular, bordering on elliptical, outline.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">A 250mm instrument reveals around 30 cluster stars. To get the best out of this region, we\u2019d recommend using a low power eyepiece and this should allow you to see both Collinder 394 and NGC 6716 in the same field of view.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p2\" id=\"h-ngc-6822\"><strong>NGC 6822<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"967\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/07\/NGC6822-68d8dab.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-97519\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">We hop outside the Milky Way for our next target, NGC 6822, also known as Barnard\u2019s Galaxy. This is a barred irregular galaxy 1.6 million lightyears from our location. It\u2019s sited east of the Teaspoon asterism and easily found by extending the line from Xi-2 Sagittarii through Rho-1 (\u03c1<sup>1<\/sup>) Sagittarii for 6.3\u02da, or roughly the same distance again.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">NGC 6822 is a tricky spot due to it shining with an integrated magnitude of +9.3 and having an apparent size of 16&#215;14 arcminutes. This gives the galaxy a low surface brightness. A small scope with a low power will show it. The galaxy should appear as a gently elevated glow compared to the background sky, with a hint of a subtle central condensation.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p2\" id=\"h-ngc-6818\"><strong>NGC 6818<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"788\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/02\/Barnards-Galaxy-and-the-Little-Gem-final-4ba88c0.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7914\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Barnard&#8217;s Galaxy and The Little Gem by Kevin R. Witman, Cochranville, Pennsylvania, USA. Equipment: Stellarvue 102ED refractor, iOptron iEQ45 GEM, Modified Canon XS.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">Our final target is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/planetary-nebula\">planetary nebula<\/a> NGC 6818, situated 0.7\u02da to the north-northwest of the centre of NGC 6822. Known as the Little Gem, this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/beginners-guide-nebulae\">nebula<\/a> shines at mag. +9.3 and has apparent dimensions of 22&#215;15 arcseconds. A small instrument will show it as a bright blue-hued disc.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">A 250mm scope reveals the nebula to be sharply defined around its outer edge and hints at a darkening in its core regions. NGC 6818\u2019s central star shines at 15th magnitude and requires an aperture over 380mm to see visually.
