Credit: 3000ad \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>But other approaches for finding evidence of alien life include observing traces of industrial air pollution on an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/exoplanets\">exoplanet<\/a>; observing the emission of artificial light from cities on the planet\u2019s night side; or even detecting evidence that a highly capable civilisation has constructed a shell around its star, known as a Dyson sphere, to capture its emitted energy.<\/p><p>Ravi Kopparapu at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and colleagues have been looking into another option.<\/p><p>Our own civilisation is turning increasingly to renewable forms of energy and it would be reasonable for an environmentally aware alien civilisation to have done the same.<\/p><p>Could we detect evidence of large solar panel farms on an exoplanet?<\/p><p>This idea was originally proposed by Manasvi Lingam, one of this study\u2019s authors, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/avi-loeb-interview-alien-technology-extra-terrestrial-intelligence\">Avi Loeb<\/a>, but they didn\u2019t calculate how feasible it might be.<\/p><p>Which is where Kopparapu and his team step in.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/06\/alien-solar-panels-1024x683.jpg?fit=800%2C534\" alt=\"Could we find an alien planet by detecting their solar panels? Credit: Justin Paget<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-detecting-alien-solar-panels\"><strong>Detecting alien solar panels<\/strong><\/h2><p>Silicon-based solar panels absorb visible light really well \u2013 that is, after all, their function.<\/p><p>They also strongly reflect ultraviolet and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/infrared-astronomy\">infrared<\/a> wavelengths.<\/p><p>This means that when you use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/splitting-starlight-science-spectroscopy\">spectroscopy<\/a> to look at solar panels, wavelengths at around 400nm and 1,000nm show distinctly as the reflectance leaps up.<\/p><p>In the same way that Earth-observation satellites can distinguish areas of sandstone from volcanic rock by their spectral features, exoplanet observers should, in principle, be able to use spectroscopy to detect artificial surfaces such as silicon panels.<\/p><p>And there\u2019s certainly a great deal of energy available to solar panels.<\/p><p>Our current global energy demands could be met with panels covering just 2.4% of Earth\u2019s land surface (compared to roughly 35% that\u2019s used for agriculture).<\/p><p>Kopparapu says that even supporting an increased world population of 10 billion people, all with a high standard of living, would only require 3% land coverage.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/03\/super-earth-exoplanet-1024x683.jpg?fit=800%2C534\" alt=\"Could we detect solar panels on a distant Earth-like planet?. Credit: Victor Habbick Visions \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Kopparapu and his team considered an Earth-like planet orbiting a Sun-like star, around 33 lightyears away.<\/p><p>Would silicon solar panels on such a planet be detectable by their spectral signature using a space-based telescope with a large, eight-metre mirror?<\/p><p>Kopparapu ran the numbers, and found that yes, it\u2019s possible\u2026 but only if hundreds of hours of observation time were used and if solar panels covered a whopping 23% of the planet.<\/p><p>To put it into context, that\u2019s equivalent to the entire surface of Africa being smothered with solar farms.\u00a0<\/p><p>So the answer is realistically a \u2018no\u2019.<\/p><p>But we only know that now because a research team has taken the trouble to actually run the study and carefully calculate the numbers. <\/p><p>And it helps to guide the future direction of which technosignatures are worth focusing on.<\/p><p><strong><em>Lewis Dartnell was reading <\/em>Detectability of Solar Panels as a Technosignature<em> by Ravi Kopparapu et al.
