Credit: ARUIZHU\/istock\/getty images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>If you are observing the planets, there are many specialist techniques that will enable you to obtain reliable results.<\/p><p>In this guide we&#8217;ll show you how to observe the most rewarding planets for study: Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.<\/p><p>Throughout the guide, we&#8217;ll mention which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/telescope-filters-beginners-guide\">telescope filters<\/a> you may wish to use to improve your observations. Credit: Sebastian Voltmer \/ CCDGuide.com<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The first thing to do is to find the correct magnification: one that gives a reasonable disc size and is suitable for the seeing conditions.<\/p><p>I find 130-160x to be about right. Venus is also best observed in bright skies, as this reduces the glare from the disc.\u00a0<\/p><p>As with all planets, don\u2019t expect to see all the fine details at once \u2013 you will need to engage with your visual system (one of the most remarkable adaptive optics kits on Earth).<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/03\/moon-mercury-venus-1024x704.jpg?fit=800%2C550\" alt=\"Venus can be seen with the naked eye, appearing like a bright star in the morning or evening sky. Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Ask yourself what you can see on the disc and slowly your eyes will respond.<\/p><p>Spend about 15 minutes looking at the planet\u2019s disc before you start drawing.<\/p><p>To sketch Venus you\u2019ll need a circle 50mm in diameter. Credit: Konstantin von Poschinger \/ CCDGuide.com<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-schroter-effect\"><strong>The Schr\u00f6ter effect<\/strong><\/h3><p>Look at Venus when it\u2019s predicted to be at half phase and you\u2019ll notice that the phase is actually slightly less than half.<\/p><p>This is the Schr\u00f6ter effect, where the planet&#8217;s observed phase is always less than the theoretical one, and it is particularly prominent in a blue filter.\u00a0<\/p><p>The phenomenon was first recorded by Johann Schr\u00f6ter in the 1790s and is due to light being scattered in the thick atmosphere.<\/p><p>You can record it for yourself: on your drawing, simply measure the distance (in mm) with a ruler from the limb to the terminator and divide this distance by 50 to get the observed phase of Venus.<\/p><p>Do this for all of your drawings and you can plot the decreasing phase against time on a graph and show how the effect changes over the course of an elongation.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mars\"><strong>Mars<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/02\/mars-martin-lewis.png\" alt=\"Mars photographed by Martin Lewis\" class=\"wp-image-146237\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Martin Lewis<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The ochre disc of Mars is full of subtle, slowly changing features.<\/p><p>Mars is a world of vast volcanoes, continent-sized canyons and majestic deserts.<\/p><p>It\u2019s not uncommon for fogs to collect in the basins such as Hellas and Argyre, and the volcanoes attract brilliant clouds at their summits.<\/p><p>Martian meteorology changes over the course of a few hours, and it can all be recorded and studied visually.<\/p><p>The well-defined Martian seasons produce different phenomena.<\/p><p>During the apparition in 2013-14, it was springtime in the northern hemisphere, and the brilliant north polar cap shrank dramatically as it sublimated away.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1112\" height=\"842\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/02\/Mars052316_ChumackHRweb-1ca5233-e1615814984414.jpg\" alt=\"Mars at Opposition, 2016 John Chumack, Dayton, Ohio, USA. Equipment: C8, Qhy5IIL CCD, 2x barlow.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Recording the retreat and advance of the polar caps is important as it reveals information about the Martian climate.\u00a0<\/p><p>The dust-storm season occurs during spring and summer in the southern hemisphere.<\/p><p>Telescopically, these storms resemble small orange clouds, and they can engulf the entire planet.<\/p><p>It may take many months for the dust to clear and afterwards there may be changes to the dark albedo features.<\/p><p>You can track the progress of large dust storms, recording their size and changes to local surroundings. A green filter helps enhance them.<\/p><p>Mars tolerates high magnification well because red light is less affected by Earth\u2019s turbulent atmosphere.<\/p><p>At powers of 300x, dark albedo features like the Syrtis Major will show a multitude of subtle structure.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1130\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/07\/Syrtis-Major-d3b8089.jpg\" alt=\"The triangular Syrtis Major can be seen in centre of this image of Mars. Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Drawing Mars requires some patience.<\/p><p>You can\u2019t spend any longer than 15 minutes doing so as Mars\u2019s rotation will have moved the features away from where you\u2019ve placed them in the drawing.<\/p><p>Sketch the phase first if it is present, then the polar caps. Spend seven minutes putting down the obvious features and use the remaining time to put in any bright clouds you can see.<\/p><p>A blue Wratten No 80A filter helps to enhance white clouds. Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The restless clouds of Jupiter have generated plenty of work for visual observers for hundreds of years.<\/p><p>Through a telescope, this gas giant is differentiated into darker belts and brighter zones.<\/p><p>Powerful jet streams carry large storms along, presenting us with an ever-changing cloudscape.<\/p><p>Jupiter has a large disc and magnifications of 160x or more are sufficient to reveal a lot of fine detail.<\/p><p>A red filter helps to enhance bluer features like festoons along the equator.<\/p><p>Conversely a blue filter helps to enhance redder objects like the belts and the Great Red Spot.<\/p><p>A yellow filter gives good all-round contrast.<\/p><p>It takes practice to record Jupiter correctly, but doing so will really hone your observational skills.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"543\" height=\"543\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/01\/15.JupiterJoshFrench-f975dff.jpg\" alt=\"Jupiter, Josh French, Grampound Road, Cornwall, 8 November 2022 Equipment: ZWO ASI 462MC camera, Orion Skyquest XX12g GoTo Truss Tube Dobsonian and mount\" class=\"wp-image-115098\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jupiter, Josh French, Grampound Road, Cornwall, 8 November 2022<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>A Jupiter drawing requires the correct blank: this planet is appreciably flattened due to its rapid rotation, so the standard blank is 64mm wide but only 60mm high.\u00a0<\/p><p>Like Mars, Jupiter rotates quickly; in this case you have 10 minutes to make your sketch.<\/p><p>First draw the main belts and large storms, recording the ones near the preceding edge first as these<br\/>will vanish soonest.<\/p><p>Spend the remaining time adding in the finer details.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/11\/jupiter-belts-zones-social-1024x538.jpg?fit=800%2C420\" alt=\"Belts and zones in Jupiter\u2019s atmosphere. Credit: BBC Sky at Night Magazine\" class=\"wp-image-142796\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-great-red-spot\"><strong>Great Red Spot<\/strong><\/h3><p>Jupiter\u2019s most famous and persistent storm is the Great Red Spot, a vast hurricane situated in Jupiter\u2019s South Tropical Zone.<\/p><p>Visible to a 5-inch scope, the Great Red Spot drifts in longitude at varying speeds; this drift rate can be measured.\u00a0<\/p><p>When the storm is visible, watch as it moves towards the central meridian.<\/p><p>When you think its centre is on the meridian, record the time.<\/p><p>Use freeware software <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jupos.org\/gh\/download.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WinJUPOS<\/a> to convert the time into longitude and repeat this whenever you observe the Great Red Spot.<\/p><p>You can plot the resulting longitudes against time and look at how quickly the spot is moving in Jupiter\u2019s atmosphere.<\/p><p>Find out more in our guide on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/observe-jupiter-through-telescope\">how to observe Jupiter<\/a>.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-saturn\"><strong>Saturn<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"448\" height=\"448\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/09\/08.SaturnPadraigConnor-5fbaa0a.jpg\" alt=\"Saturn at opposition Padraig Connor, Belfast, Northern Ireland, 18th July 2022 Equipment: ZWO ASI224MC planetary camera, SkyWatcher 200P, Dobsonian mount\" class=\"wp-image-112008\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Saturn at oppositionPadraig Connor, Belfast, Northern Ireland, 18th July 2022Equipment: ZWO ASI224MC planetary camera, SkyWatcher 200P, Dobsonian mount<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>It is often said that majestic Saturn is a \u2018quieter\u2019 Jupiter. The belts and zones of Saturn\u2019s atmosphere are less well defined, but the storms that this planet can produce are even more ferocious.\u00a0<\/p><p>Watching and charting storm activity is one of the main tasks for visual observers of Saturn.<\/p><p>Storms are seasonal, occurring every 30 years, and usually take the form of a large white oval on Saturn\u2019s equator.<\/p><p>Recently Saturn has produced storms in living memory: quite unexpectedly in late 2010 a large storm erupted in the planet\u2019s northern hemisphere, lasting into 2011. <\/p><p>This powerful storm churned up the North Tropical Zone, reminding us of the need for a constant vigil if we\u2019re to catch the next outbreak.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"762\" height=\"528\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/10\/06.RobbieSmith_Saturn.jpg\" alt=\"Saturn Robbie Smith, Stevenage, Hertfordshire, 15 August 2023 Equipment: ZWO ASI178MC colour CMOS camera, Celestron C9.25 XLT Schmidt-Cassegrain, Sky-Watcher EQ6-R Pro mount\" class=\"wp-image-141673\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Saturn by Robbie Smith, Stevenage, Hertfordshire, 15 August 2023<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>To really view Saturn, you\u2019ll need to use a power of 160x times or more; 250x is a good all-round magnification.<\/p><p>Drawing Saturn requires five accurately placed ellipses \u2013 so don\u2019t try to do it free-hand, use a carefully produced blank.\u00a0<\/p><p>Saturn is also a quick spinner, so spend about eight minutes drawing in the main features on the disc and the rings, and use the final four minutes to finish the fine details such as the fainter belts and shadows.<\/p><p>Filters work well for Saturn: yellow enhances the contrast between belts and zones, while light blue helps to emphasise redder features.<\/p><p>Also watch out for a bi-coloured aspect of Saturn\u2019s rings: occasionally Saturn\u2019s outermost ring, the A-Ring, appears brighter in a blue filter than in a red one.<\/p><p>Although rare, this phenomenon has been reported by visual observers and is worth keeping an eye out for.<\/p><p>Find out more in our guide on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/observing-saturn-telescope\">how to observe Saturn<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/05\/Masuyama-1-25-inch-53-eyepieces-social-1024x538.jpg?fit=800%2C420\" alt=\"A range of eyepieces will serve you well for observing the planets\" class=\"wp-image-156797\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A range of eyepieces will serve you well for observing the planets<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-best-astronomy-accessories-for-observing-the-planets\"><strong>Best astronomy accessories for observing the planets<\/strong><\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-eyepieces\"><strong>Eyepieces<\/strong><\/h3><p>A selection of medium- and high-power <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/eyepieces-the-basics\">eyepieces<\/a>, giving a range of magnifications to suit your seeing conditions. Red, blue and yellow filters are invaluable.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pencils\"><strong>Pencils<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3><p>Some planetary features are more subtle than others, so you\u2019ll need range of pencils from HB to 6B, to capture as many as possible.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-red-light\"><strong>Red Light<\/strong><\/h3><p>White light destroys night vision, so always use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/reviews\/accessories\/red-light-torches\">red light<\/a> to draw.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-winjupos\"><strong>WINJUPOS<\/strong><\/h2><p>This essential free software (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jupos.org\/gh\/download.htm\">www.jupos.org\/gh\/download.htm<\/a>) displays the features present on Jupiter or Saturn\u2019s disc at any date and time, and gives you the planetary longitudes for both gas giants so you can record the location of details.<\/p><p>It is especially helpful as these planets have three systems of longitude due to their different bands of rotation.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/05\/Astronomy-log-book-05cd602.jpg\" alt=\"When observing the planets, a log book will help you keep track of what you see.\" class=\"wp-image-49250\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">When observing the planets, a log book will help you keep track of what you see.<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-keeping-a-log-book\"><strong>Keeping a log book<\/strong><\/h2><p>Keeping a log book is an essential skill for any visual observer.<\/p><p>It will keep your observations in a logical structure and you\u2019ll be able to look back and see how your drawing skills have developed.<\/p><p>Your log book should be a sturdy bound notebook, and every observation should include the following information:\u00a0<\/p><ul><li>The <strong>date<\/strong> of observation<\/li><li>The <strong>time<\/strong>, always in UT<\/li><li>The <strong>telescope and magnification<\/strong>, along with the details of any filters used<\/li><li>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/what-is-astronomical-seeing\">seeing<\/a> conditions<\/strong>, recorded using the Antoniadi scale, which runs in Roman numerals from I to V;
