Credit: Cavan Images \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>One of the simplest ways to do smartphone astrophotography through a telescope is to use the afocal technique, where a picture is taken while the camera is held up to the eyepiece.<\/p><p>Improvements in mobile phone camera technology and apps that allow manual camera settings mean that it\u2019s now possible for phones to capture really good astro photos at the eyepiece.\u00a0<\/p><p>The advantage of the afocal technique is that it can be done with any telescope used for visual observing.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/02\/photo-moon-with-smartphone-05-e8449b7.jpg\" alt=\"Pointing smartphone camera down telescope afocal imaging\" class=\"wp-image-116395\"\/><\/figure><p>You don\u2019t need to remove the eyepiece to take a photo, so it\u2019s very easy to switch between visual observing and imaging.<\/p><p>The camera\u2019s zoom function also allows you to digitally increase the magnification through the same eyepiece. \u00a0<\/p><p>Although you can manually hold the phone up to the eyepiece, trying to keep the camera lens perfectly lined up with the light cone of the eyepiece while also adjusting the telescope\/focuser and navigating the camera settings is much more difficult than it sounds!<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-smartphone-adaptor\"><strong>Smartphone adaptor<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1082\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/01\/Altair-Astro-Self-Centering-Smartphone-Adaptor-78e796f.jpg\" alt=\"Altair Astro Self-Centering Smartphone Telescope Adaptor. Credit: Altair Astro\" class=\"wp-image-44539\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Altair Astro<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The easiest solution to lining up your smartphone&#8217;s camera with your telecope eyepiece is to buy a smartphone telescope adaptor.<\/p><p>This clips on around the telescope eyepiece and holds the phone firmly in the correct position, leaving your hands free to concentrate on adjusting the focus and camera settings.\u00a0<\/p><p>There are many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/top-astronomy-kit\/best-smartphone-adapters-telescopes\">smartphone telescope adaptors<\/a> available that will keep the camera lens perfectly lined up with the eyepiece.<\/p><p>When choosing one, check that it will fit the eyepiece you\u2019re using, as not all adaptors expand far enough to fit around eyepieces larger than 1.25 inches in diameter.<\/p><p>When you first set up the adaptor for your phone, make sure you\u2019re lined up with the correct lens, because most modern phones have multiple camera lenses and may suddenly switch between them as you zoom in and out.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/telescope-smartphone-holder-b2e4bf9.jpg\" alt=\"telescope smartphone holder\" class=\"wp-image-57274\"\/><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-photographing-with-your-smartphone-telescope-combo\"><strong>Photographing with your smartphone-telescope combo<\/strong><\/h2><p>Once your smartphone is attached to your telescope eyepiece, the most important step is gaining manual control of the camera so you can do real astrophotography<\/p><p>You need to be able to focus the telescope and not have the phone constantly auto-adjusting focus, exposure and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/iso-photography\">ISO<\/a>.<\/p><p>In low light, the camera will probably get the focus wrong and either over- or underexpose images to cope with the dynamic range.<\/p><p>Fortunately, native camera apps often have additional controls hidden in the \u2018Pro\u2019 menus that allow you to manually adjust focus, exposure and ISO settings.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/08\/09.TheMoon_SoniaTurkington-771x1024.jpg?fit=771%2C1024\" alt=\"The Moon Sonia Turkington, North Reddish, Stockport, 25 June 2023 Equipment: Google Pixel 6 smartphone, Sky-Watcher Classic 250P Dobsonian reflector, integrated mount\" class=\"wp-image-138073\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Moon Sonia Turkington, North Reddish, Stockport, 25 June 2023 Equipment: Google Pixel 6 smartphone, Sky-Watcher Classic 250P Dobsonian reflector, integrated mount<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Shorter exposures work well on bright objects like the brighter planets, the Moon and the Sun (with the addition of a solar filter or Herschel solar wedge) and so these targets are a good place to start when finding your way around the camera settings.<\/p><p>You can then try more challenging, fainter deep-sky objects which may require longer exposures than the native camera app can provide.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"2560\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/07\/M13-eq80-IP7-plm-96c484d-edited-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"M13 taken with NightCap. Credit: Paul Money<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-there-s-an-app-for-that\"><strong>There&#8217;s an app for that<\/strong><\/h2><p>If the camera is compatible, apps like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/reviews\/accessories\/nightcap-camera-app-for-iphone-ipad-review\">NightCap<\/a> or AstroShader (iPhone) and Open Camera or DeepSkyCamera Beta (Android) will allow longer exposures and better settings control, and they can capture at the highest resolution.\u00a0<\/p><p>Some apps provide live <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/astrophoto-tips\/a-guide-to-astrophotography-stacking\">stacking<\/a>, others can capture a sequence of images, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/astrophoto-tips\/understanding-using-dark-frames-astrophotography\">darks<\/a> and flats which you can manually stack to improve results for fainter objects.<\/p><p>Remember that your maximum exposure time is governed by whether or not your telescope mount is static or tracking.<\/p><p>Deep-sky objects often don\u2019t show up so well on screen, so like all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/a-beginners-guide-to-astrophotography\">astrophotography<\/a> it takes practice to really perfect the technique for these challenging objects.<\/p><p>You can improve your images with some basic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/astrophoto-tips\/astrophotography-image-processing-beginners-guide\">image processing<\/a> too.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/03\/Bresser-ISA-Space-Exploration-NASA-70-700-AZ-sunspots-1024x768.jpg?fit=800%2C600\" alt=\"Sunspots, taken with the Bresser ISA Space Exploration NASA 70\/700 AZ telescope on an iPhone 5s using the solar filter, 20mm eyepiece and smartphone adaptor. Credit: Steve Richards<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-best-targets-for-your-smartphone-telescope-combo\"><strong>Best targets for your smartphone-telescope combo<\/strong><\/h2><p>There are a dazzling number of night-sky objects that make great targets for smartphone astrophotography, but you\u2019ll get the best results if you choose ones that suit the type and aperture of your telescope.<\/p><p>Different objects need different ISO and exposure times, so keep checking your live view to refine your settings.<\/p><p>Stacking multiple images will reveal more faint details.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-small-telescopes\"><strong>Small telescopes<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/07\/smartphone-telescope-moon-1024x747.jpg?fit=800%2C584\" alt=\"The Moon is a great place to start astrophotography with a smartphone and telescope. Credit: Mary McIntyre<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>You can use your digital zoom to magnify further, but be aware that some images get very grainy at full zoom.<\/p><p>Big open clusters, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/stars\/star-clusters\/perseus-double-cluster\">Double Cluster<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/stars\/star-clusters\/beehive-cluster\">Beehive Cluster<\/a>, M44, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/stars\/star-clusters\/pleiades\">Pleiades<\/a>, M45, are good choices, as are brighter nebulae such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/nebulae\/the-orion-nebula-m42\">Orion Nebula<\/a>, M42, or brighter galaxies such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/galaxies\/andromeda-galaxy\">Andromeda Galaxy<\/a>, M31.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/07\/smartphone-telescope-lagoon-nebula-1024x706.jpg?fit=800%2C552\" alt=\"A superb Lagoon Nebula.
