My first sight of a dynamic auroral display high overhead was so spellbinding that I unthinkingly walked forward in awe, stepping onto a frozen stream and plunging one foot through the ice.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Needless to say, that brought me back to Earth swiftly! But soon I was entirely enthralled by the sky again, the cold merely a background sensation unable to break my attention. For a few million people in northerly parts of the globe they\u2019re a familiar, nightly occurrence between autumn and spring.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">There is no exact record of their discovery \u2013 the earliest Arctic settlements date back over 1,000 years \u2013 but there are notable mentions of historic sightings in regions where they seldom appear; for example, ancient Greece and China.This is only possible under exceptional circumstances, perhaps only once on a timescale of many generations.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">The sight of the aurora must have been inexplicable for early witnesses and hard to believe, if not sheer legend, for those they tried to explain it to.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"897\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/03\/GettyImages-141551106-14dedf6-e1615201164172.jpg\" alt=\"Norwegian physicist Kristian Birkeland in his laboratory in Norway, 1910s. Photo by Mondadori via Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">Galileo, who investigated reports with great interest, proposed that they were formed by sunlight reflected from the atmosphere. In 1619, he coined the term \u2018aurora borealis\u2019, from Latin: \u2018Dawn of the North\u2019.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">In fact, \u2018Northern Lights\u2019 is actually the much older name. In the ancient Icelandic language they are called \u2018<i>Nor\u00f0urlj\u00f3s<\/i>\u2019 \u2013 literally \u2018North Lights\u2019.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">The first serious scientific proposal for their origin did not arrive until as recently as the end of the 19th century, when Norwegian physicist Kristian Birkeland replicated them in the laboratory.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Using a magnetised sphere to represent Earth, he demonstrated that glowing ovals appear around the magnetic poles when gas is excited by high energy electrons.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading p3\" id=\"h-what-causes-the-aurora\"><strong>What causes the aurora?<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"858\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/03\/Earth-magnetic-field-ca7d165-e1678970787621.jpg\" alt=\"The dynamo effect of the Earth\u2019s spinning molten core produces our planet\u2019s magnetic field, which prevents the solar wind from stripping away our atmosphere. Credit: Naeblys \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">Nowadays, there's no secret to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/what-causes-northern-lights\">what causes the Northern Lights<\/a>. The aurorae are a continuous reminder of our planet\u2019s unbroken connection with its parent star.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">What we tend to imagine as empty space in the Solar System is actually flooded with solar radiation: protons and electrons streaming away from the Sun\u2019s atmosphere at an average speed of 1.6 million kilometres per hour.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Enormous, high-energy events such as coronal mass ejections (CMEs) also release colossal quantities of solar plasma and magnetic energy into the planetary region.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Far from being smooth in distribution, the solar wind is lumpy, its influence on Earth ever-changing.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">The study of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/space-weather-met-office-predicting-solar-phenomena\">space weather<\/a> enables us to forecast the cause of the Northern Lights, as solar wind particles are captured by Earth\u2019s magnetic field and accelerated towards the magnetic poles.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"945\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2011\/10\/Cascading_combo-5d33c57-e1683708741375.jpg\" alt=\"A coronal mass ejection captured by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory. Credit: Solar Dynamics Observatory, NASA.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">Diving into the atmosphere, they strike gas atoms and molecules, ionising them and resulting in the release of different colours of light.Radio waves are also released and, under specific conditions, a crackling sound may be produced.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">The strength and motion of the Northern Lights varies sensitively with both the intensity of the solar wind and the stability of Earth\u2019s magnetic environment.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">When a pocket of solar magnetic energy, released during a CME, strikes Earth, a geomagnetic storm occurs, expanding the size of the auroral ovals and bringing the Northern Lights further south.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">At such times, they can cover the sky as seen in the Arctic and break clear from the horizon for observers in Scotland, becoming visible across much of the northern UK.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-are-there-different-colours-of-the-northern-lights\"><strong>Why are there different colours of the Northern Lights?<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1026\" height=\"684\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/05\/01-aurora-Richard-Jenkinson-5d1bc8f.jpeg\" alt=\"The Northern Lights captured by Richard Jenkinson in Nellim, Finland, using a Sony a77V and 14mm lens. Credit: Richard Jenkinson.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">The most prominent colour of the aurora is green, released by excited oxygen atoms between 100\u2013150km above ground. For more on this, read our guide on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/astrophoto-tips\/how-do-you-take-photographs-of-the-aurora\">how to photograph the aurora<\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">At high altitudes, atomic oxygen creates a deep red, almost crimson fade from the top of an auroral curtain to stars above it. The mixing of colour can also result in yellows and blues appearing with varying degrees of clarity.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Meanwhile, the curtains may hang stoically, or dance playfully. Sometimes they divide or merge in line with the \u2018sheets\u2019 in Earth\u2019s magnetic field.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">During an intense display you may be lucky and find yourself looking straight up into an auroral corona at the zenith, making it appear as though it is enveloping you.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/05\/06.Aurora_JohnChumack-1024x683.jpg?fit=800%2C534\" alt=\"Aurora borealis John Chumack, Fairbanks, Alaska, USA, 12 March 2024 Equipment: Canon EOS 6D camera, 16mm lens, Bogen tripod\" class=\"wp-image-155272\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Aurora borealis byJohn Chumack, Fairbanks, Alaska, USA, 12 March 2024Equipment: Canon EOS 6D camera, 16mm lens, Bogen tripodCanon 6D, 16mm lens, ISO 3200, 10 second exp.<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-is-the-best-time-to-see-the-northern-lights\"><strong>When is the best time to see the Northern Lights?<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"p3\">There is a common misconception that the aurorae are only visible at a peak of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/understanding-sun-science-solar-cycle\">solar cycle<\/a>, which occurs once every 11 years.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Given that we're currently in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/new-solar-cycle-begun\"> Solar Cycle 25<\/a> and maximum solar activity is forecast for 2025, this would mean waiting quite some time.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Fortunately, this isn\u2019t necessary. While increased solar activity does indeed provide more opportunities for explosive auroral displays, they can still be seen in quieter years with reasonable frequency.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1996\" height=\"936\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/02\/Screenshot-2020-02-25-at-08.39.36-7d4423e.png\" alt=\"A Solar Cycle peaks roughly every 11 years.\" class=\"wp-image-45532\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A Solar Cycle peaks roughly every 11 years.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">Mid-September and October are particularly good times to make your first expedition to see the aurora. Between November and January, the extreme cold of northern nights can be a real challenge.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">February and March are a little kinder and typically less expensive months to travel. During the northern summer months, many places at high northern latitudes experience short hours of night, or no real night at all, so the sky does not get sufficiently dark enough for the Northern Lights to become visible.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-can-you-see-the-aurora-from-the-uk\"><strong>Can you see the aurora from the UK?<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"708\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/05\/10-aurora-Alison-Bossaert-06cf07c-e1615203616504.jpg\" alt=\"The Aurora captured by Alison Bossaert from Kielder Observatory, Northumberland, UK, 6 March 2016. Credit: Alison Bossaert<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">Many excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/travellers-guide-aurora-hunting\">aurora-chasing destinations<\/a> are within reach of the UK: Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Finland are all famed for their access to the Northern Lights on solid ground, while cruises and short flights can take you up to the Arctic Circle on a dedicated trip.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">But it is possible to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/how-to-see-the-aurora-in-the-uk\">see the aurora from the UK<\/a>. Consider an aurora-chasing trip to Inverness. I spent some of my childhood near Lossiemouth, where the Lights can be glimpsed over the North Sea.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">On rare occasions, they can be seen as far south as North Wales, giving millions of Britons the opportunity to experience the phenomenon without needing to travel too far.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/10\/11-Lough-Neagh-Aurora-2017-89cb893-e1571904386236.jpg\" alt=\"The Aurora over Lough Neagh in Northern Ireland. Credit: Stephen Wallace \/ Hibernia Landscapes<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">Successful aurora-chasing is a matter of picking the right time and place, but luck will always play a part, just as with any other form of astronomy.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">However, no matter the conditions, your first view of this magnificent natural wonder will always stay with you. Neither freezing cold nor partial cloud can spoil it.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Almost everyone I\u2019ve introduced to the Northern Lights initially expected to relive Joanna Lumley\u2019s televised experience, but she was luckier than most get.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">However, what they eventually saw was infinitely better: the real thing. It\u2019s worth the adventure!<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-9-top-tips-for-spotting-the-northern-lights\"><strong>9 top tips for spotting the Northern Lights<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"793\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/03\/Aurora_Chasing-copy-9fd8cb2-e1615200831692.jpg\" alt=\"When trying to see the Aurora, keep away from busy roads and car headlights. Travel close to new Moon and prepare to go looking every night during your trip, even if the forecast is cloudy.<\/li><li class=\"p1\">Use local weather services to choose a location with the highest chance of clear sky throughout the night.<\/li><li class=\"p1\">Research your viewing site and be prepared to spend some hours there. You should aim to stay out until at least 01:00 to 02:00<\/li><li class=\"p1\">Find a spot away from a road to avoid interference from vehicle headlights.<\/li><li class=\"p1\">Take care driving on unfamiliar terrain, particularly in the Arctic wilderness! If renting a car, consider something suitable for rough roads.<\/li><li class=\"p1\">You don\u2019t need any equipment, but if you\u2019re planning to photograph the aurora, set up your camera before stepping into the cold. Turn off your car\u2019s headlights and any interior lights.<\/li><li class=\"p1\">If it\u2019s windy, park your car in such a way that you can use it as a windbreak while keeping a clear view of the north.<\/li><li class=\"p1\">Scan the northern horizon. Look for diffuse, cloud-like patches of light. Most displays are gentle to begin with. The luminosity and faint green colour of a brightening auroral display are very distinct.<\/li><li class=\"p1\">Keep watching until the display picks up in energy. You\u2019ll see more movement and colour as auroral curtains ripple across the sky.
