{"id":62597,"date":"2024-08-11T07:42:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-11T07:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bdeef45e-1905-461f-bd71-2504fb866dd5"},"modified":"2024-08-11T08:39:38","modified_gmt":"2024-08-11T08:39:38","slug":"nearby-planet-reeks-of-rotten-eggs-and-rains-glass-but-could-tell-astronomers-a-great-deal-about-life-beyond-earth","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcskyatnight\/rss_feed\/nearby-planet-reeks-of-rotten-eggs-and-rains-glass-but-could-tell-astronomers-a-great-deal-about-life-beyond-earth\/","title":{"rendered":"Nearby planet reeks of rotten eggs and rains glass, but could tell astronomers a great deal about life beyond Earth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Exoplanet&#8217;s smell is from hydrogen sulphide, a vital ingredient for building the molecules of life. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Iain Todd\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Sunday, 11 August 2024 at 07:42 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>It\u2019s rare that discovering a place that smells of rotten eggs is a cause for celebration, but that\u2019s the case with exoplanet HD 189733 b.<\/p><p>Observations of the planet\u2019s atmosphere by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) found traces of hydrogen sulphide, the chemical which gives bad eggs their odour and which is an important ingredient in the formation of life.<\/p><p><strong><em>Discover the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/weirdest-exoplanets-universe\">strangest, weirdest exoplanets in the Universe<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Blue planet HD 189733b around its host star (artist\u2019s impression)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5N7bT65yFes?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>&#8220;We\u2019re not looking for life on this planet \u2013 it\u2019s way too hot,&#8221; says Guangwei Fu from Johns Hopkins University, who led the study.<\/p><p>&#8220;But finding hydrogen sulphide is a stepping stone for finding this molecule on other planets and gaining more understanding of how different types of planets form.&#8221;<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-hd-189733-b-like\"><strong>What is HD 189733 b like?<\/strong><\/h2><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/exoplanets\">Exoplanet<\/a> HD 189733 b is far from a pleasant place to visit, quite aside from its odour \u2013 the temperature is around 930\u00b0C (1,700\u00b0F), it rains glass and the wind blows up to 8,000km\/h (5,000mph).<\/p><p>Located 64 lightyears away, the planet is slightly larger than Jupiter but orbits its star 13 times closer than Mercury orbits the Sun.<\/p><p>Fu\u2019s team used JWST to characterise the planet\u2019s atmosphere, accurately measuring its water, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide content, as well as uncovering hydrogen sulphide.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Exoplanet HD 189733 b reeks of rotten eggs and rains glass.
