Don&#8217;t worry, you&#8217;re not seeing things!<\/p><p>Recent studies show that our Moon is rusting, but this is not the reason that it appears orange.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">When the Moon is low above the horizon it appears dull and distinctly orange in colour \u2013 a stark contrast to its brilliant silvery hue when it is high in the sky.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The 1 August 2023 supermoon captured by Fatih Aktas, New York City, USA. Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">As a result, more blue and violet light (the shorter wavelengths of visible light) is scattered by the atmosphere, so the light we observe is largely towards the red end of the spectrum (light with longer wavelengths).<\/p><p class=\"p2\">In summer, the Moon is below the celestial equator when it\u2018s full or nearly full, so from the UK it doesn\u2019t rise high enough above the horizon to shake off its orange hue.<\/p><p>Read our guide to find out when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/next-full-moon\">next full Moon<\/a> is visible.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1070\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/08\/Screenshot-2021-08-02-at-14.55.41-4da3bfc-e1684849349307.png\" alt=\"Aristarchus Crater on the Moon\" class=\"wp-image-98649\" title=\"Aristarchus Crater\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Aristarchus Crater on the Moon<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">However, there are localised areas on the Moon that have a real orange colouration; a pair of steadily-held binoculars will show a decidedly orange patch near the bright <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/moon\/aristarchus-crater\">crater Aristarchus<\/a>, which is known as Wood\u2019s Spot.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">The Moon also appears to take on an orange or red colour during a total <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/moon\/lunar-eclipses\">lunar eclipse<\/a> as a result of longer wavelengths of sunlight being refracted by the Earth\u2019s atmosphere onto the eclipsed Moon.<\/p><p><strong><em>Have you observed or photographed an orange Moon?
