{"id":62636,"date":"2024-08-15T09:19:32","date_gmt":"2024-08-15T09:19:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/38cc4a61-7180-4c31-ab57-2c6a3a856e13"},"modified":"2024-08-15T09:39:39","modified_gmt":"2024-08-15T09:39:39","slug":"new-private-satellite-telescope-to-study-distant-stars-and-habitable-worlds-gets-scheduled-launch-date","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcskyatnight\/rss_feed\/new-private-satellite-telescope-to-study-distant-stars-and-habitable-worlds-gets-scheduled-launch-date\/","title":{"rendered":"New private satellite telescope to study distant stars and habitable worlds gets scheduled launch date"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">New satellite equipped with telescope will study distant stars and exoplanets. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Iain Todd\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Thursday, 15 August 2024 at 09:19 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>A new stargazing satellite that will be used by astronomers to study dynamic processes occurring at distant stars, and the habitability of exoplanets, has been given its launch date.<\/p><p>Private company Blue Skies Space has announced the scheduled launch of its Mauve science satellite\u00a0for October 2025.<\/p><p>The\u00a0satellite\u00a0is due to be launched into low Earth orbit on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket as part of the Transporter-15 rideshare programme.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mauve - Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of Stars\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qew41PEHizQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mauve-satellite-and-astronomy\"><strong>Mauve satellite and astronomy<\/strong><\/h2><p>Mauve is Blue Skies Space\u2019s first\u00a0satellite and boasts a 13cm telescope that will be used to gather data on hundreds of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/beginners-guide-stars\">stars<\/a>, observing them in optical light but also ultraviolet wavelengths.<\/p><p>Observations will focus on stars&#8217; magnetic activity and powerful eruptions known as flares, much like the solar flares we see erupting from our own Sun.<\/p><p>Mauve&#8217;s telescope will also gather information on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/exoplanets\">exoplanets<\/a> \u2013 planets orbiting stars beyond our Solar System \u2013 and their potential habitability.<\/p><p>Blue Skies Space says researchers are now being asked to sign up for observing time and submit their proposals to suggest where Mauve&#8217;s telescope should be pointed during its 3-year mission.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Artist&#8217;s impression of Blue Skies Space&#8217;s Mauve satellite. Credit: Blue Skies Space<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Astronomers who&#8217;ve signed up include those from Boston University, the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, Rice University, Vanderbilt University, and Western University.\u00a0<\/p><p>&#8220;The launch of Mauve will help accelerate space science by unlocking greater access\u00a0to more time-domain, ultraviolet data complementing the larger facilities such as the Hubble Space Telescope,&#8221; says Prof Giovanna Tinetti, Chief Scientist and Co-founder of Blue Skies Space.<\/p><p>&#8220;Mauve will be transformational in helping us understand the flaring behaviour of a population of nearby stars, most of which are even more active than our Sun.
