{"id":62700,"date":"2024-08-23T06:01:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-23T06:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/860eae4e-83f7-4c0a-8ce6-683a0dc92fa6"},"modified":"2024-08-23T06:39:45","modified_gmt":"2024-08-23T06:39:45","slug":"hubble-space-telescope-captures-countless-stars-at-the-centre-of-the-star-forming-triangulum-galaxy","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcskyatnight\/rss_feed\/hubble-space-telescope-captures-countless-stars-at-the-centre-of-the-star-forming-triangulum-galaxy\/","title":{"rendered":"Hubble Space Telescope captures countless stars at the centre of the star-forming Triangulum Galaxy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">A familiar favourite as you&#8217;ve never seen it before. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Iain Todd\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Friday, 23 August 2024 at 06:01 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>The Triangulum Galaxy is one of the most famous spiral galaxies in astronomy, it&#8217;s one of our own Galaxy&#8217;s closest neighbours, and its core has been captured in exquisite detail by the Hubble Space Telescope.<\/p><p>Also known as Messier 33, being the 33rd entry in the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/messier-catalogue\">Messier Catalogue<\/a> of deep-sky objects, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/galaxies\/triangulum-galaxy\">Triangulum Galaxy<\/a> is the third largest member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/local-group-guide-galaxy-neighbourhood\">Local Group of galaxies<\/a>, after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/galaxies\/andromeda-galaxy\">Andromeda Galaxy<\/a> and our Milky Way.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full has-lightbox\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hubble Space Telescope image showing the centre of the Triangulum Galaxy. Dalcanton (University of Washington); Processing: Gladys Kober (NASA\/Catholic University of America)<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-triangulum-galaxy-and-star-formation\"><strong>Triangulum Galaxy and star formation<\/strong><\/h2><p>The Triangulum Galaxy is bursting with star formation, 10 times greater even than the Andromeda Galaxy.<\/p><p>It&#8217;s also an incredibly neat and pristine example of a spiral galaxy with well-defined arms that, say astronomers, indicate it&#8217;s not currently being gravitationally perturbed by interactions with neighbouring galaxies.<\/p><p>M33&#8217;s propensity for star formation is due to the fact it contains so much cosmic gas and dust: the key ingredients for forming new stars.<\/p><p>It contains so-called H-II regions, which are clouds of ionised hydrogen that fuel star formation.<\/p><p>Astronomers say there&#8217;s evidence that high-mass stars are forming in collisions between massive molecular clouds in the Triangulum Galaxy.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full has-lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1979\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/08\/hubble-centre-triangulum-galaxy-inset-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Inset image shows Hubble's view of the centre of the Triangulum Galaxy.
