autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>It was later classified as an active galactic nucleus, meaning it\u2019s emitting a lot of radiation from its central region, which is believed to be produced by matter falling into the supermassive black hole at its centre.<\/p><p>Since the discovery, the galaxy has continued showing random optical variations.<\/p><p>The fact that the galaxy didn\u2019t show any previous activity, and now varies like an active galactic nucleus, is very puzzling.<\/p><p>Normally transient events related to the galaxy\u2019s central supermassive black hole show very smooth variations and only last for a few dozens or hundreds of days.\u00a0<\/p><p>To find out more about the mystery, we spoke to Dr Paula S\u00e1nchez S\u00e1ez, an astronomer at the European Southern Observatory in Germany.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"\/><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-causing-the-changes-in-sdss1335-0728\"><strong>What&#8217;s causing the changes in SDSS1335+0728?<\/strong><\/h2><p>Galaxy SDSS1335+0728 could either be a low-mass active galactic nucleus igniting for the first time or it could be a very exotic tidal disruption event, where a star is disrupted by a supermassive black hole.<\/p><p>Time will confirm which of these hypotheses are correct, while future monitoring will be crucial to understanding the nature of this extraordinary event.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-has-sdss1335-0728-changed-in-the-last-few-years\"><strong>How has SDSS1335+0728 changed in the last few years?<\/strong><\/h2><p>To understand the light variations observed in the nucleus we gathered archival data and conducted follow-up observations using various telescopes, including ESO\u2019s Very Large Telescope, SOAR, Keck, Swift and Chandra.\u00a0<\/p><p>We found that SDSS1335+0728 is now brighter in the ultraviolet, optical and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/infrared-astronomy\">infrared<\/a> ranges compared to two decades ago.<\/p><p>More surprisingly, we discovered that\u00a0in February 2024 it began emitting X-rays more than four years after the first alert from the Zwicky Transient Facility.<\/p><p>Moreover, our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/splitting-starlight-science-spectroscopy\">spectroscopic<\/a> follow-up campaign revealed the galaxy changed its classification from\u00a0star-forming galaxy to an active galactic nucleus.<\/p><p>However, we haven\u2019t yet seen the formation of broad emission lines which are normally seen in active galactic nuclei and transient events like tidal disruption events.<\/p><p>All these observations demonstrate that this is a very peculiar source, which behaves in a way that has not been seen before.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/08\/SDSS13350728-1024x631.jpg?fit=800%2C493\" alt=\"Artist's impression of galaxy SDSS1335 0728, which in 2019 started brightening. Kornmesser<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-can-we-learn-from-watching-this-happen-in-real-time\"><strong>What can we learn from watching this happen in real time?<\/strong><\/h2><p>If the source corresponds to a newborn active galactic nucleus, it will allow us to observe an active galactic nucleus while it\u2019s activating, which has never been done before.<\/p><p>At the moment, there are no models that properly describe what happens when an active galactic nucleus fires up and this observation will allow us to develop these models in the future.<\/p><p>If it corresponds to a transient event, it will represent a new phenomenon which has never observed before.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Zooming into the galaxy SDSS1335+0728 and its newly awakened black hole\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7BwcOj_hFZg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-has-it-taken-until-now-to-see-an-active-galactic-nucleus-fire-up\"><strong>Why has it taken until now to see an active galactic nucleus fire up?<\/strong><\/h2><p>In another paper, led by Patricia Arevalo, we presented another newborn active galactic nucleus. However, we didn\u2019t see the activation of the black hole in real time.<\/p><p>We just know that the galaxy was not active 18 years ago and now it is.<\/p><p>In the case of SDSS1335+0728, we observed the source while it was in the middle of becoming active, which can teach us a lot about how this process happens and how these systems evolve.\u00a0<\/p><p>Interestingly, we discovered these two objects using the same machine-learning classifier, which our collaboration has been using since 2020 to discover objects of interest.\u00a0<\/p><p>These kinds of discoveries have been possible recently thanks to\u00a0all-sky surveys, such as the Zwicky Transient Facility and the upcoming Vera Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time, which are facilitating the identification of transient events in the centres of galaxies hosting supermassive black holes. \u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-next\"><strong>What&#8217;s next?<\/strong><\/h2><p>We\u2019re now monitoring the source with different telescopes and in different wavelength regimes,<br\/>and we plan to keep monitoring it while it shows activity.<\/p><p>This will finally allow us to understand what exactly has happened with this mysterious galaxy.<\/p><p><strong><em>This interview appeared in the September 2024 issue of BBC Sky at Night Magazine.<\/em><\/strong><\/p> <\/body><\/html>\n<hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Ezzy Pearson Published: Monday, 26 August 2024 at 13:00 PM In 2019, distant galaxy SDSS1335+0728 suddenly and dramatically brightened.
