It\u2019s a semi-variable star, meaning its brightness changes over time.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Usually it is bright enough to be seen with the unaided eye, but in the past it has temporarily dimmed enough to make binoculars necessary. <\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-p-cygni\"><b>P Cygni<\/b><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full has-lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"759\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/05\/p-cygni-star-chart-label-71b1a0c.jpg\" alt=\"Chart showing how to find P Cygni\" class=\"wp-image-118450\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p2\"><b>Magnitude: <\/b>+4.8<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Despite the fact that it is over 5,000 lightyears away, this luminous blue hypergiant is so bright that it\u2019s visible to the unaided eye in the constellation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/cygnus-constellation\">Cygnus<\/a>, the Swan.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">You\u2019ll find it shining with a magnitude of +4.8 close to where the tail and wings of the Swan meet.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-vy-canis-majoris\"><b>VY Canis Majoris<\/b><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full has-lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"741\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/05\/vy-canis-major-star-chart-label-f4b33e7.jpg\" alt=\"Chart showing how to find VY Canis Majoris, one of the biggest most famous stars in the Universe\" class=\"wp-image-118451\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p2\"><b>Magnitude: <\/b>+6.5 to +9.6<\/p><p class=\"p3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/vy-canis-majoris\">VY Canis Majoris<\/a> is one the biggest stars in the Universe. This pulsating red hypergiant is located in the constellation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/astronomy-tour-canis-major\">Canis Major<\/a>, or the Great Dog, diagonally down to the left of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/orion-belt-sword\">Orion\u2019s Belt<\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">It\u2019s visible from the UK in the winter and very close to the horizon below Sirius.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-v-4030-sagittarii-v-4029-sagittarii\"><b>V 4030 Sagittarii &amp; V 4029 Sagittarii<\/b><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full has-lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"672\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/05\/V4030-Sagittarii-star-chart-label-6f8b217.jpg\" alt=\"Chart showing how to find V 4030 Sagittarii &amp; V 4029 Sagittarii\" class=\"wp-image-118452\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p2\"><b>Magnitude: <\/b>+8.3<\/p><p class=\"p3\">This pair of blue hypergiants is located to the southeast of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/nebulae\/the-omega-nebula\">Omega Nebula<\/a> (M17) in the constellation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/sagittarius-contellation\">Sagittarius<\/a>.
