Just hold your camera up to the telescope\u2019s eyepiece and start snapping away.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">This technique is known as \u2018afocal photography\u2019 and if you already have a camera and telescope, you don\u2019t need anything else to get started.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">A DSLR provides you with several options. They can be used to take afocal shots, just like smartphone and point-and-shoot cameras. Or they can be turned directly to the night sky to capture nightscapes. Equipment: SPC900, Celestron Nexstar 127 SLT.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">That DSLRs have detachable lenses means that they can be connected directly to a telescope, essentially turning the telescope into the camera lens.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">You\u2019ll need a T-adaptor and a T-ring. The T-ring is brand-specific. It mounts on your DSLR and screws into the T-adapter, which then attaches to your telescope.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Although the newest models of DSLRs can shoot video, they\u2019re not ideal for high-resolution lunar imaging, and this is where high frame rate planetary cameras come in.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1703\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/02\/Celestron-Advanced-VX-700-Maksutov-Cassegrain-telescope-81fc426.jpg\" alt=\"The Celestron Advanced VX 700 Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope. Telescopes like these are popular with advanced lunar astrophotographers.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">These cameras are capable of taking short videos and shoot many frames per second. You can use any telescope you like, although large aperture Schmidt-Cassegrains and Maksutov-Cassegrains are popular choices with top lunar photographers.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">This is because their longer focal lengths are well suited to close-up imaging of the Moon, and compared to a high-quality refractor telescope you get a much larger aperture for your money.<\/p><p>For advice on which telescope to use, read our guide to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/best-astrophotography-telescopes\/=\">best telescopes for astrophotography<\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Whatever type of telescope you use, make sure it\u2019s well collimated, by ensuring that its optics are carefully aligned to produce the sharpest image possible. A mount like this will help you keep the Moon in your field of view.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">As in any area of astronomy, your telescope\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/a-basic-guide-to-telescope-mounts\">mount<\/a> needs to be rock solid and stable. The ability to track the Moon \u2013 either with a motor drive or with full Go-To capability \u2013 is a must if you\u2019re using a high frame rate camera.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">If you&#8217;re on the lookout for a new mount, read our guide to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/top-astronomy-kit\/best-telescope-mounts\">best telescope mounts<\/a> available.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">A mount\u2019s drives should be set to track at the lunar rate, not at the rate the stars move across the sky.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">If you\u2019re using a Go-To mount, take time to set it up properly, otherwise you may find yourself having to make continuous, tiresome tracking adjustments when imaging.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">If you\u2019re using a high frame rate camera you\u2019ll need a computer to run it. This computer will also need capture software installed if your camera doesn\u2019t have any of its own.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-essential-lunar-astrophotography-accessories\"><strong>Essential accessories for photographing the Moon<\/strong><\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-red-filter\"><strong>Red filter<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1050\" height=\"580\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/red-filter-1883346-e1609928688948.jpg\" alt=\"Red filter\" class=\"wp-image-57273\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">If you\u2019re using a monochromatic planetary camera you might find it helpful to fit a red filter when capturing lunar images. Using one can help produce a crisper final picture. It increases the focal length and the magnification of your system, typically by two or three times.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-smartphone-bracket\"><strong>Smartphone bracket<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/NexYZ-3-Axis-Universal-Smartphone-Adapter-8c66b95.jpg\" alt=\"Smartphone bracket\" class=\"wp-image-57291\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">Holding a smartphone squarely over an eyepiece while you take a photo is a delicate art. You can make things easier with a dedicated bracket to do the job for you. Credit: Will Gater<\/figcaption><\/figure><ol><li class=\"p1\">Decide what your target on the Moon is and work out the best time to capture it.<\/li><li class=\"p1\">Use astronomy apps or software to decide what date and time to photograph<\/li><li>Pick a date when your Moon target is near the line between the illuminated and dark portions: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/moon-terminator\">terminator<\/a>.<\/li><li class=\"p3\">Shoot when the target is lit from an angle to reveal surface textures and rugged lunar crust, craterlets and other subtle features like rilles.<\/li><li>Check the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/what-is-astronomical-seeing\">seeing<\/a> conditions: atmospheric turbulence that can blur and distort your view of the Moon<\/li><li class=\"p3\">Leave your telescope outside to cool down before you start. This will reduce wobbling in your image caused by heat rising<\/li><li class=\"p3\">Never take images from indoors: heat escaping will cause the view to shimmer wildly<\/li><li class=\"p3\">Connect your computer equipment and start imaging<\/li><li class=\"p3\">If you need to make minor corrections on your Go-To or driven mount, be sure you know which button to press<\/li><li class=\"p3\">Check by rotating the camera in the eyepiece holder so when you press the left or up button the image moves left or up<\/li><li class=\"p3\">If using a camera with a monochrome chip and seeing conditions aren\u2019t perfect, use a red filter on the camera to improve the view<\/li><li class=\"p3\">Make sure your capture software is set up and recording to a hard drive with sufficient free space.<\/li><li class=\"p3\">Record each night\u2019s captures to a fresh folder so they can be easily located later.<\/li><li class=\"p3\">Use the live window in your capture software to help focus<\/li><li class=\"p3\">Focus the camera: make sure it\u2019s locked in the eyepiece holder<\/li><li class=\"p3\">Pointing the telescope at the Moon\u2019s terminator and adjust the focus knob. The high contrast between light and dark will show when the image is sharpest.<\/li><li class=\"p3\">Move the telescope to your target, knowing it\u2019s in focus.<\/li><li class=\"p3\">Take a short video of just over a minute. Why is this?<\/p><p class=\"p2\">The answer doesn\u2019t lie out in space but closer to home, in Earth\u2019s atmosphere. When looking at the Moon at high magnification on an average night, you\u2019ll notice the view undulating, with moments of steady, sharp views and then brief blurred instants.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">Since they generally only take single still images, the shots from a DSLR or point-and-shoot camera risk being blurred by this atmospheric turbulence at the moment when the shutter fires.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1370\" height=\"585\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/10\/Good-seeing-vs-bad-seeing-e35c293.jpg\" alt=\"The steadiness of the atmosphere can mean the difference between a blurred picture (left) and a clear one (right). It enables the sharpest moments of clarity to be selected.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">You can then stack these frames together using specialised software and process them further to bring out tremendous detail on the Moon\u2019s surface.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">So for wide-field shots of the Moon, DSLRs are fine. Credit: Altair Astro<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">You\u2019ll need to hold the phone squarely over the eyepiece and keep it steady without touching the telescope.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Once you\u2019ve got this bit right, the tricky part is pressing the shutter button without moving the phone. Be prepared for some mediocre shots at first but persevere \u2013 they will get better. <\/p><p class=\"p3\">Whether you hold your phone or use an adaptor, you\u2019ll have to set your telescope up with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/eyepieces-the-basics\">eyepiece<\/a>, ideally one with a low to medium magnification to start with. 25mm is normally a good choice.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">If you\u2019re using a short focal length telescope with a low-power eyepiece, you should be able to get a shot of the Moon with the telescope on a fixed tripod.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"530\" height=\"530\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/06\/15-Richard-Matthews-Fly-me-to-the-Supermoon-9a7bf2b.jpg\" alt=\"Richard Matthews captured this image of a plane in front of the Moon from Staffordshire, UK, using a Samsung Galaxy J5 smartphone and a Celestron Travel Scope 70.\" class=\"wp-image-36755\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Richard Matthews captured this image of a plane in front of the Moon from Staffordshire, UK, using a Samsung Galaxy J5 smartphone and a Celestron Travel Scope 70.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">A driven and polar-aligned equatorial mount makes things easier, keeping the Moon centred and allowing you to use higher magnifications without your images suffering from motion blur. <\/p><p class=\"p3\">Point the telescope at the Moon and focus the view through the eyepiece. With the Moon centred in view, hold your smartphone so it\u2019s pointing squarely down the eyepiece.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Try not to touch the eyepiece as this may move the telescope, nudging the Moon out of view.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Once you\u2019ve got the Moon on the phone\u2019s screen, check that the camera lens is looking squarely down the eyepiece.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">If you get it right, the light from the eyepiece will be at its brightest and evenly spread as it enters the phone\u2019s camera lens.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">If it\u2019s slightly tilted, you\u2019ll get a gradual degradation of brightness across the image.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1092\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/08\/Mn-LX65-8-ip7-plm-56a5624-e1609933515733.jpg\" alt=\"A crescent Moon captured with the NightCap smartphone app. Credit: Paul Money\" class=\"wp-image-39640\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A crescent Moon captured with the NightCap smartphone app. Credit: Paul Money<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">When you\u2019re all lined up, take the shot. Be gentle, though, as it\u2019s easy to move the phone as you press the shutter button.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Some smartphone earphones can be used to operate the shutter via their in-line volume controls, while others offer voice control to prevent movement at this crucial moment.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">For extra stability, a smartphone adaptor can take the strain out of holding your smartphone so are well worth your consideration.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Modern smartphone cameras are starting to offer more ways of altering exposure, often by photo apps. Carefully alter the distance between camera and eyepiece until the view focuses and isn\u2019t overexposed. Once aligned, you can take the shot.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-photograph-the-crescent-moon-and-earthshine\"><strong>Photograph the crescent Moon and Earthshine<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"p1\">We\u2019re going to show you how to capture a full-disc shot of the crescent Moon, along with its accompanying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/earthshine-moon-what-is-how-see-it\">earthshine<\/a>, using a DSLR camera.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The image we\u2019re aiming for, like the ones below, depicts the Moon with a slim edge illuminated by light directly from the Sun and the rest of its face dimly lit by light reflecting off Earth.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2328\" height=\"1616\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/02\/Moonshine-21-march-2015-d3d48f3.jpg\" alt=\"Crescent moon and Earthshine by Ron G, captured with a Canon EOS 1200D DSLR camera and Tamron 70-300mm lens.\" class=\"wp-image-6352\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Crescent moon and Earthshine by Ron G, captured with a Canon EOS 1200D DSLR camera and Tamron 70-300mm lens.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">As is often the case with astrophotography targets, it involves more than simply pointing your camera up at the sky on the appropriate night and pressing the shutter release.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">But before we explain how to catch a shot like this, it\u2019s worth explaining how this elegant scene comes about.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">At the point of new Moon, the lunar disc lines up with the Sun, while appearing slightly above or below it in the sky.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">In this position, the Sun\u2019s light is only able to reach the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/moon-far-side\">far side of the Moon<\/a> directly, so the lunar face (the side seen by us on Earth) is bathed in darkness.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1342\" height=\"930\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/Earthshine-ea20bdc-e1609939728714.jpg\" alt=\"A thin crescent Moon exhibiting Earthshine setting over ESO\u2019s Paranal Observatory in Chile, 27 October 2011. Tafreshi (twanight.org)<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">It\u2019s not possible to see the Moon at this point in its monthly cycle as it is lost to the Sun\u2019s glare.In the days following new Moon, the Moon appears to gradually separate from the Sun.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">As the Moon slowly moves eastwards and its separation from the Sun increases, more of the Sun\u2019s light is able to creep around its edges and we get to see more of its face illuminated with each passing night<\/p><p class=\"p3\">This process is what gives us the Moon\u2019s familiar phases, starting with the new Moon, followed by the crescent Moon, then the first quarter and the gibbous phases, before reaching the full Moon phase, when it\u2019s opposite the Sun in the sky.<\/p><p>The sequence then plays out in reverse, before reaching the next new Moon, 29.5 days later.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"819\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/06\/Phases-of-the-Moon-8b7b4e0-e1601368389183.jpg\" alt=\"The phases of the Moon. Credit: BBC Sky at Night Magazine<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">During this cycle we can often see the dimly illuminated portions of the Moon thanks to earthshine but the contrast between the portions is perhaps most dramatic during the crescent phase.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Imaging the earthshine is pretty straightforward: you use a longer exposure than for the crescent. The human eye has an amazing dynamic range.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">When you look at a thin crescent Moon with the glow of earthshine, it\u2019s easy to take for granted just how much work your eyes are doing to see both the crescent and the earthshine so naturally.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">A camera will struggle to see this contrast in one image: you\u2019ll need to combine two exposures.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">This technique, known as high-dynamic-range imaging, is a key astrophotographic skill that can help with tricky targets such as this. The steps below will help you capture the necessary shots and blend them.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-photograph-a-crescent-moon-step-by-step\"><strong>Photograph a crescent Moon, step-by-step<\/strong><\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-1-attach-your-camera\"><strong>Attach your camera<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/Photograph-crescent-moon-01-329ef0d.jpg\" alt=\"Photograph a crescent Moon step 01\" class=\"wp-image-57308\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">Attach your DSLR to a telescope or lens with a focal length of at least 300mm \u2013 this will give you a large enough image to see the Moon\u2019s disc with some detail on it. A telescope or lens with a focal length of around 1,000mm is ideal.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-2-set-the-iso\"><strong>Set the ISO<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/Photograph-crescent-moon-02-fb04950.jpg\" alt=\"Photograph a crescent Moon step 02\" class=\"wp-image-57309\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">Focus the camera as accurately as possible and set an ISO of 200-400 for the crescent shot. The exposure you\u2019ll need will depend on your equipment. Take a test shot of 0.5 seconds and review the result.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-3-adjust-exposure\"><strong>Adjust exposure<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"548\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/Photograph-crescent-moon-03-b17b46f.jpg\" alt=\"Photograph a crescent Moon step 03\" class=\"wp-image-57310\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">Adjust the exposure so that the crescent comes out bright but without any white in it: check by looking at the image\u2019s histogram on your DSLR. Take several shots increasing the exposure as you go until the image looks really overexposed.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-4-layer-up\"><strong>Layer up<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"794\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/Photograph-crescent-moon-04-63fd90b.jpg\" alt=\"Photograph a crescent Moon step 04\" class=\"wp-image-57311\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">Pick the best crescent shot and open it in Photoshop or GIMP. Then pick a sharp overexposed shot of the earthshine without too much glare from the crescent. Load it as a new layer and align the two \u2013 reduce the opacity of the upper layer to do this.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-5-magic-masker\"><strong>Magic masker<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"735\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/Photograph-crescent-moon-05-cef0396.jpg\" alt=\"Photograph a crescent Moon step 05\" class=\"wp-image-57312\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">Make the upper layer opaque, then use the magic wand tool to select the crescent (adjust the tolerance if it\u2019s not selecting it all). Create a layer mask. In Photoshop, copy the selection, hold down the alt key and click the layer mask button.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-6-blur-and-blend\"><strong>Blur and blend<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"799\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/Photograph-crescent-moon-06-99b4563.jpg\" alt=\"Photograph a crescent Moon step 06\" class=\"wp-image-57313\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">Use the eyedropper to sample the sky colour and use it to fill a layer between the shots. Set the new layer\u2019s blend mode to Lighten and merge with the correctly exposed layer. Doing so can reduce the effects of poor seeing. Alternatively, try a red filter.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Moving across the lunar surface in overlapping panels is something that sounds easy, but there are pitfalls to avoid.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"949\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/01\/01_CraigTowell_MoonMosaic2-ed5fae0.jpg\" alt=\"A Moon mosaic captured by Craig Towell, Bristol, UK, 21 September 2019 using an Altair Astro GPCAM3 290M mono camera, a Fullerscope 8.75&quot; f\/7.5 Newtonian and a Sky-Watcher EQ6 mount.\" class=\"wp-image-44325\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A Moon mosaic captured by Craig Towell, Bristol, UK, 21 September 2019 using an Altair Astro GPCAM3 290M mono camera, a Fullerscope 8.75&#8243; f\/7.5 Newtonian and a Sky-Watcher EQ6 mount.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\"> The higher the magnification you use, for instance, the easier it is to get lost and miss a bit out; this is a common frustration when starting out.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">It pays to be realistic in terms of image scale. If you\u2019re experimenting with mosaics for the first time, capture a small number of panes to start with so you can get a feel for what\u2019s what.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Image scale can be adjusted using optical amplifiers such as Barlow lenses, but aim to keep your telescope\u2019s overall focal ratio somewhere between f\/15 and f\/45. Only go higher if the seeing gets really good.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">A driven, equatorially mounted scope is ideal. Check your camera\u2019s alignment by slewing in right ascension and rotating the camera so that features move parallel to the bottom edge of the frame. Finally, focus your setup.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">There are various ways to move across the Moon, but imaging in horizontal strips with lots of overlap is best. A good overlap is typically 20-25%.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"894\" height=\"861\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/moon-mosaic-fa186ef-1-e1609942904326.jpg\" alt=\"moon mosaic photograph\" class=\"wp-image-57315\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">When lining up your first pane, make a note of features close to the corners of the frame and use these as guides when positioning for the next one. <\/p><p class=\"p2\">It\u2019s good practice to image the strips in the same direction, moving back to the same starting side of the Moon between strips. Use features in the first strip of panes to make sure your vertical adjustment has plenty of overlap.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">A rough sketch of the features in each frame can help. If you lose track, wind back to the last place you know you definitely imaged. It\u2019s better to risk duplication than a gap!<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Point your telescope at the brightest part of the Moon and adjust your camera\u2019s gain and exposure so peak saturation is around 90%.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">You should now be able to leave this alone. You can adjust the exposure levels for each frame if you want, but this is more time consuming and requires greater effort when it comes to stitching your panes together.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2926\" height=\"2776\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/02\/Mosaic-Final-fe6f7c3.png\" alt=\"A Moon mosaic captured on 9 May 2017 by Chris Campbell.\" class=\"wp-image-11640\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A Moon mosaic captured on 9 May 2017 by Chris Campbell.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">The advantage is less noise in dark regions and extra navigational detail when crossing seemingly featureless areas, such as the lunar seas. For more on this, read our guide on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/astrophoto-tips\/remove-noise-from-your-astrophotos-of-the-moon\">how to remove noise from your astrophotos of the Moon<\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">What you\u2019ll need to do during a long mosaicing run is refocus often. This is essential to prevent defocusing caused by temperature variations.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">A 12V camping hairdryer is also invaluable for removing moisture from dewed-up optics during long runs. Plan ahead to make sure the Moon doesn\u2019t disappear behind by a tree or rooftop part of the way through your imaging session.<\/p><p>Below we&#8217;ll show you how to process your panes and create your Moon mosaic. Credit: Dave Eagle<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">The next step is to process each AVI file to produce one still image, ready for assembly into the final mosaic.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">For a large mosaic made with many panes this can be a daunting and tedious task, but there are ways to speed things up. <\/p><p class=\"p3\">The first step is to analyse, register and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/astrophoto-tips\/a-guide-to-astrophotography-stacking\">stack<\/a> the frames captured in each AVI file. There are various good free programs that can do this for you, including RegiStax, AutoStakkert and AviStack.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">We\u2019ll be using AviStack for the bulk of the processing and RegiStax to perform wavelet sharpening on the results. For more on this, read our guide to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/astrophoto-tips\/wavelets-registax-guide\">wavelets in RegiStax<\/a> or how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/astrophoto-tips\/how-stack-dslr-images-moon\">stack DSLR images of the Moon<\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">The analysis step determines the quality of each still frame and then ranks them in order of how good they are. A user-set quality threshold then determines how many of the frames are used.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">The frames that are above the threshold are \u2018registered\u2019 (aligned) to one another. These are then \u2018stacked\u2019 (averaged) to produce a final image. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1023\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/Moon-mosaic-quality-analysis-102ad78.jpg\" alt=\"moon mosaic threshold\" class=\"wp-image-57319\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">The higher the quality threshold, the fewer frames will ultimately go into the stack. This will result in the sharpest output, but with fewer frames to average, noise is more noticeable.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Set the quality threshold lower and there will be more frames to average, resulting in a smoother, less noisy result. But using lower-quality frames reduces overall image sharpness.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">It\u2019s a good idea to perform a number of test runs using AviStack if you\u2019re not familiar with the program.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">There are a lot of settings that can be configured. These are shown in a separate window and can be viewed by expanding the tree list.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"883\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/02\/20141231_lune-gibbeuse_0-c759e6a-e1609943260728.jpg\" alt=\"A 12-frame Moon mosaic, by David de Cuevas, captured from Treize Vents, France, with a ZAO ASI 120MC camera and a 150\/750 Newtonian.\" class=\"wp-image-5916\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A 12-frame Moon mosaic, by David de Cuevas, captured from Treize Vents, France, with a ZAO ASI 120MC camera and a 150\/750 Newtonian.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">Double clicking on a parameter section, for example \u2018Frame selection\u2019, will bring up a control window allowing you to adjust the settings. You can toggle between automatic and manual processing by clicking on the gear icon below the section header.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Setting the toggle to \u2018Automatic processing\u2019 lets AviStack make decisions for you, which can be useful if you\u2019re not sure what you\u2019re doing.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">AviStack has a great batch-processing mode that can work on large numbers of AVI files unattended. The end result is a single distilled image for each AVI capture.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Various output formats are available, but we recommend PNG as this is a lossless format that many editing programs and file viewers can easily display.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Other lossless files can be used, but how easy they are to view and manipulate varies. Avoid formats such as JPEG that use \u2018lossy\u2019 compression \u2013 these discard data to make files smaller.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3638\" height=\"3656\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/02\/b-c5c9f7a.jpg\" alt=\"Mosaic of a 35%-lit Moon, by Jarrod Bennett, captured from Mutxamel, Spain, using a ZWO ASI120mm camera and a Sky-Watcher 150PL.\" class=\"wp-image-6018\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Mosaic of a 35%-lit Moon, by Jarrod Bennett, captured from Mutxamel, Spain, using a ZWO ASI120mm camera and a Sky-Watcher 150PL.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">Following the step-by-step guide below, the initial process delivers results with no sharpening. To the eye these will look blurred, so to address this we\u2019ll apply the excellent wavelet sharpening function in RegiStax. <\/p><p class=\"p3\">Sharpening lunar images needs to be done with great care \u2013 it\u2019s easy to get carried away and push it too far. If in doubt, leave the image up on your computer screen and walk away from it for a while.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">When you come back, your initial reaction will be a good indicator as to whether you\u2019ve taken things too far. If you\u2019re creating your mosaic at low magnification, a gentle tweak on the first slider is all that\u2019s normally required.<\/p><p>The most exciting part of mosaicing is building the final image. There are free programs that can do this automatically, such as Microsoft\u2019s Image Composite Editor (ICE).<\/p><p>Building the mosaic manually is more time-consuming, but ultimately a more rewarding experience.<\/p><p>Doing it yourself can also help to avoid the errors that can creep in when you let automated programs carry out the process.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-process-your-lunar-image-step-by-step\"><strong>Process your lunar image, step-by-step<\/strong><\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-1-load\"><strong>Load<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"997\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/Processing-panes-AviStack-01-d4d8010.jpg\" alt=\"Process your lunar image step 01\" class=\"wp-image-57301\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">Load a single AVI into AviStack. If you\u2019re processing it manually, select Settings &gt; Processing &gt; All Manual from the menu. If not, click on All Automatic. Expand the Save Stacked Image section and check Manual processing is set. Click on Automatic processing if shown. Expand the Post processing section and select Manual processing. The four options below should be deselected.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-2-save\"><strong>Save<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"921\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/Processing-panes-AviStack-02-cba61a8.jpg\" alt=\"Process your lunar image step 02\" class=\"wp-image-57302\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">Click on Process File. In the Save stacked image window (right) select PNG as the file type and pick a folder to save it to. Make sure Save Parameters is ticked before you save. Hit Cancel when the Post processing window appears. Check if the result needs wavelet sharpening (see step 5). If not, repeat and adjust parameter settings in a manual run using the help options to assist.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-3-batch-process\"><strong>Batch Process<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"781\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/Processing-panes-AviStack-03-23c1943.jpg\" alt=\"Process your lunar image step 03\" class=\"wp-image-57303\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">That\u2019s your first processed file complete. The settings for this file will be used for the batch processing run. Click Add Movies and select all of the files to be processed, then click Open. Finally, click Batch processing and let the program run through each file, saving the results as per the settings you chose in the save stacked image box in the previous step.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-4-keep-the-originals\"><strong>Keep the originals<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"719\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/Processing-panes-AviStack-04-6a52ef1.jpg\" alt=\"Process your lunar image step 04\" class=\"wp-image-57304\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">Once you have all the AviStack-processed PNG results, copy them to a new folder called \u2018Wavelet-sharpened\u2019. These are the files you\u2019ll edit in RegiStax, but leaving the originals untouched means you can rework them if new techniques become available. Once you have your final results, the originals can be discarded if you need the disk space.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-5-sharpen\"><strong>Sharpen<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1001\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/Processing-panes-AviStack-05-022e09d.jpg\" alt=\"Process your lunar image step 05\" class=\"wp-image-57305\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">Run RegiStax and click Select. Change Files of Type to match the format of the processed images (in this example, PNG). Load the first image. With the Wavelet tab selected, click on the preview buttons to see which details will change. Use the slider that shows the finest detail that isn\u2019t just noise grain. Adjust the sliders to sharpen the image to taste.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-6-begin-the-mosaic\"><strong>Begin the mosaic<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"717\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/Processing-panes-AviStack-06-a344a02.jpg\" alt=\"Process your lunar image step 06\" class=\"wp-image-57306\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">Wavelet sharpen all of the images, saving each when done. Next, load the first image into a program such as Photoshop or GIMP and crop any unwanted edge artefacts. Estimate how big the canvas needs to be to hold all the panes and resize it. Don\u2019t worry if you get it wrong as you can adjust it later. Select a black background for the new canvas.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading p3\" id=\"h-building-your-moon-mosaic-manually\"><strong>Building your moon mosaic manually<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"942\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/moon-mosaic-alignment-5a49b7f.jpg\" alt=\"Building your moon mosaic manually\" class=\"wp-image-57317\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p4\">If you followed our step-by-step guide above, your base image will contain a single, finished pane and your canvas will be big enough to take the rest. Load the next frame in the sequence and draw a selection box slightly smaller than the frame edge. <\/p><p class=\"p1\">Apply a 5-10 pixel feather to the selection. Copy the selection and paste it into the base image.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Use the arrow keys to align the pane with the lower image. Toggling the visibility of the pane on and off will help you align it accurately.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Small variations in tone between the pasted and base images can normally be dealt with by gently tweaking the curves tool (see our guide to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/astrophoto-tips\/guide-photoshop-levels-curves\">Photoshop Levels and Curves<\/a>). You should apply the adjustment to the centre of the curve.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">For larger variations, raise or drop the brightness of the image first to get it closer to where you want it, then use the curves tool to carry out fine adjustments.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The feathered edges of the pasted image pane should make any straight edges hard to see. <\/p><p class=\"p1\">If some are still obvious, set the eraser tool to 10% and gently rub it over any visible joins; this should hide them.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"591\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/Moon-mosaic-tonal-differences-faa46c8.jpg\" alt=\"You may need to adjust brightness and contrast to blend adjacent panes together\" class=\"wp-image-57318\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">You may need to adjust brightness and contrast to blend adjacent panes together<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">For very large mosaics that stretch your computer\u2019s memory, assemble a batch of panes and then save the layered image to a file called \u2018mosaic-001\u2019.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Flatten the image and continue loading with the next set of frames. When you get to a similar stage as before, save as \u2018mosaic-002\u2019 and flatten.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Repeat until the whole mosaic is complete. Doing this means you can go back and address any major problems.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">When you\u2019re finished, flatten the image and save it with a file name of your choice. A gentle tweak of brightness or contrast, or a small adjustment using the levels and curves tools, can help to finish off your masterpiece.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">It takes a bit of work to build such a mosaic manually but once it\u2019s done, the feeling of satisfaction will be immense\u2026unless you\u2019ve missed a bit of course!<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-photograph-a-thin-morning-crescent-moon\"><strong>How to photograph a thin, morning crescent Moon<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"p1\">A morning crescent Moon is a great target to photograph. The morning crescent represents a time when we\u2019re seeing the illuminated portion of the Moon\u2019s globe apparently diminishing in size: a waning crescent Moon.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">An evening lunar crescent represents a time when we\u2019re seeing the Moon\u2019s phase growing: a waxing crescent Moon.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"706\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/11\/GettyImages-1282212522-e0d6954-e1607515297494.jpg\" alt=\"The phases of the Moon. Credit: Yaorusheng \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">The term \u2018young\u2019 or \u2018old\u2019 when used to describe the Moon\u2019s age refers to where the Moon sits in its 29.5-day synodic month \u2013 the complete cycle of phase of the Moon as seen from Earth.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">This period is defined to reset at new Moon (age equal to 0 days), and grow thereafter, resetting to zero again at the next new Moon.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">A young lunar crescent is one that&#8217;s less than a few days old. Such a Moon is easy to locate and focus on because it\u2019s bright against the dark sky.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Old or young crescents present as thin slivers of illuminated lunar surface and, for this reason, appear less bright than they would in their fuller phases.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Thin crescents occur when the Moon is near to the Sun in the sky and this also hinders visibility, the crescent being easily lost against the bright twilight backdrop.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">As avid Moon-watchers will know, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/why-can-see-moon-during-day\">Moon is often visible during the day<\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Here we have a problem: in order to photograph such a Moon well, it\u2019s essential to achieve sharp focus.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Being so thin, even a small deviation from the true focus position of your camera lens or scope may cause the Moon\u2019s light to spread into a blur that is lost against the background sky.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"610\" height=\"415\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/02\/Venus-Moon_0-81ba5d4.jpeg\" alt=\"A morning crescent Moon and Venus, captured by Colin Foran, Arborfield, Reading, UK,.\" class=\"wp-image-2880\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A morning crescent Moon and Venus, captured by Colin Foran, Arborfield, Reading, UK,.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">One way around this is to pre-focus at infinity the night before. For a camera lens this requires it to be set to manual focus before carefully focusing on a distant object, such as a bright star or planet.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">A piece of low tack electrical tape can then be used to carefully \u2018lock\u2019 the lens\u2019s focuser ring in place, hopefully holding it secure in readiness for your next thin Moon attempt.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">This technique doesn\u2019t always work. Variations in temperature during the day or inadvertently knocking the focus ring, even while stuck down, may cause a change in focus.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">It\u2019s better to focus on something a long way off before your attempt on the Moon. Focusing on the Sun is the better option, but this requires the use of a white light solar safety <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/telescope-filters-beginners-guide\">filter<\/a> on the lens or scope to keep things safe.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">As ever, remember to follow solar safety precautions and never look at the Sun directly with the naked eye.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Once focused, the hard part is done and by following our guide steps below, you\u2019ll be able to grab yourself an ultra-thin Moon. Once you\u2019ve caught one, you\u2019ll be hooked to try for more!<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading p2\" id=\"h-equipment-for-photographing-a-thin-crescent-moon\"><strong>Equipment for photographing a thin crescent Moon<\/strong><\/h2><ul><li class=\"p2\">DSLR camera<\/li><\/ul><ul><li class=\"p2\">Tripod<\/li><\/ul><ul><li class=\"p2\">Shutter-release cable<\/li><\/ul><ul><li class=\"p2\">Lens with a focal length between 200-1,000mm<\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-photographing-a-thin-crescent-moon-step-by-step\"><strong>Photographing a thin crescent Moon, step-by-step<\/strong><\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-step-1\"><strong>Step 1<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/02\/Photograph-a-crescent-moon-01-1a313b1.jpg\" alt=\"Photographing a thin crescent Moon step 01\" class=\"wp-image-58331\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">Homework is important for thin Moon attempts. Determine where the Moon is relative to the Sun and work out where it will be relative to the horizon after sunset. Choose a shooting location where the horizon appears low and unobstructed. A clear sky is best, as haze or low cloud will hide the crescent from view.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-step-2\"><strong>Step 2<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"776\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/02\/Photograph-a-crescent-moon-02-4074ae0.jpg\" alt=\"Photographing a thin crescent Moon step 02\" class=\"wp-image-58332\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">If you plan to use a lens, choose one which will show a good crescent. This typically means something with a focal length starting around the 200-300mm mark. A 1000mm setup (typically achieved using a telescope) will give you a good crescent size. A focal ratio between f\/9 and f\/16 is ideal.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-step-3\"><strong>Step 3<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"779\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/02\/Photograph-a-crescent-moon-03-54a997a.jpg\" alt=\"Photographing a thin crescent Moon step 03\" class=\"wp-image-58333\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">Keep ISO in a low range of 100-1600. Start low and increase for evening sessions, as the sky darkens over time. For morning sessions, start high and lower the ISO as sunrise approaches. See opposite for how to focus accurately. If you can see the Moon on the back of the camera, use that to ensure the focus is sharp.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-step-4\"><strong>Step 4<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/02\/Photograph-a-crescent-moon-04-6e5b77e.jpg\" alt=\"Photographing a thin crescent Moon step 04\" class=\"wp-image-58334\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">Line your camera up so the Moon is in view. There\u2019s a chance you may not be able to see the crescent visually if it\u2019s very thin. If so, you\u2019ll need to judge where to point your camera relative to the horizon and rely on it being able to record the crescent. Take an image using a test exposure of 1 second.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-step-5\"><strong>Step 5<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/02\/Photograph-a-crescent-moon-05-a02af4e.jpg\" alt=\"Photographing a thin crescent Moon step 05\" class=\"wp-image-58335\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">Examine the result using your camera\u2019s histogram display. If the graph is stacked hard to the left or right, you\u2019ll need to adjust exposure. If it\u2019s too dark, you\u2019ll need to increase the exposure and\/or ISO; if it\u2019s too light, you\u2019ll need to decrease the exposure and\/or ISO. Aim to get the peak within the left-right limits of the graph.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-step-6\"><strong>Step 6<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"714\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/02\/Photograph-a-crescent-moon-06-ff7416b.jpg\" alt=\"Photographing a thin crescent Moon step 06\" class=\"wp-image-58336\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">Load the results into your image editing software. A tweak to the brightness and contrast settings may help bring out the faint lunar crescent. Alternatively, open the curves tool and place an anchor in the centre of the adjustment line, then adjust the curve\u2019s shape to become more of an \u2018S\u2019 to improve its visibility.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-photograph-craters-on-the-moon\"><strong>Photograph craters on the Moon<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"p1\">The Moon is a pockmarked lump of rock, battle-scarred from a multitude of past impacts. Some of these were so large that they deformed the lunar crust, depressing and cracking it so the resulting depressions infilled with lava.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">These huge basins form the lunar seas or lunar maria, and they can be extensive in area.As well as the large basins, there are many craters of all shapes and sizes that make great imaging targets.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2015\/07\/Copernicus1_processed-abfd8d4.jpg\" alt=\"Crater Copernicus captured with a Nikon CoolPix 4500 camera attached to a 125mm Schmidt-Cassegrain on an equatorial mount. All you need to do is to point the phone\u2019s camera down the eyepiece of a telescope.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">Known as afocal imaging, this technique produces good results, often exceeding the results that used to be produced by coupling a DSLR to a scope.<\/p><p class=\"p4\">As afocal imaging requires you to point your scope at the Moon, a tracking drive is recommended as it alleviates the need to continually shift the scope\u2019s position to keep the Moon in view. If you wear glasses, focus with them on. Use a low- to mid-power eyepiece and centre the Moon in the field of view.<\/p><p class=\"p4\">Next, activate your smartphone\u2019s camera. Most camera apps have a pro or manual mode that allows you to control the camera settings, which is great if you\u2019re feeling confident.If not, leave the camera on automatic.<\/p><p class=\"p4\">The Moon is bright enough to activate the camera app\u2019s auto-settings and 75% of the time the values selected will work just fine.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1840\" height=\"1088\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/02\/LUA-4-C11-COM-NOME-png-jansen-2-5444a77.png\" alt=\"Janssen Crater by Fernando Oliveira De Menezes, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Then, slowly but surely, move towards the eyepiece keeping the bright area in view.<\/p><p>It can take a while to get this right, and bear in mind you need to a) keep the camera flat to the eyepiece and b) eventually press the shutter button.<\/p><p class=\"p4\">The second step is easier if you use a remote shutter release. A smartphone\u2019s wired headphones often mimic this action; plug them in and press the volume up button.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-photograph-moon-craters-with-a-planetary-camera\"><strong>Photograph Moon craters with a planetary camera<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1211\" height=\"668\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/02\/Moon-2011.05.12-22.13UT-Crater-Plato-15ca7d1.jpg\" alt=\"Plato Crater on the Moon, by Andrew R. Houghton, captured with a Canon EOS 60D DSLR, Sky-Watcher Evostar 120mm refractor with EQ5 mount.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p4\">The best crater images are obtained using a high frame rate planetary camera attached to the eyepiece end of a telescope.<\/p><p class=\"p4\">There are certain techniques that will give you optimal results, and we\u2019ve shown some of these in our step-by-step guide below.<\/p><p class=\"p4\">How small you can go in terms of crater diameter is determined by the size of your scope: the greater the aperture, the smaller the feature you can resolve.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3401\" height=\"2789\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/02\/Moon-Crater-Janssen-15.01.16-46c8bc3.jpg\" alt=\"Crater Janssen by Luke Oliver, Grays, UK. Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">The simplest method for imaging the Moon with a scope is to point a camera down the eyepiece using the technique of afocal imaging (as described above), which works well for smartphones. Getting everything lined up can be tricky, so practice is advised. Also, it\u2019s best to image the Moon when it\u2019s not close to full phase.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-2-0\"><strong>Step 2<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"932\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/Photograph-moon-crater-02-cc9a94b.jpg\" alt=\"Photograph craters on the Moon step 02\" class=\"wp-image-57236\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">If you have a DSLR or MILC camera, fit an adaptor onto the connecting ring of the camera\u2019s body \u2013 where the lens would usually connect \u2013 and attach an eyepiece barrel for insertion into your scope. A 2-inch barrel will avoid light cone clipping, which can lead to vignetting (a darkening at the edges) in images.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-3-0\"><strong>Step 3<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"958\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/Photograph-moon-crater-03-3c40a61.jpg\" alt=\"Photograph craters on the Moon step 03\" class=\"wp-image-57237\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">For high-resolution crater imaging, a high frame rate planetary camera is best. Controlled by an external computer such as a laptop, modern high frame rate cameras can typically capture from many tens to hundreds of frames per second. This helps to combat seeing-related issues, such as atmospheric distortions.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-4-0\"><strong>Step 4<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"960\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/Photograph-moon-crater-04-335017e.jpg\" alt=\"Photograph craters on the Moon step 04\" class=\"wp-image-57238\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">Bear in mind that seeing degrades with low altitude and the Moon appears highest when due south. As wind direction affects low-level seeing, note the seeing for different wind directions to predict when conditions may be steady. To avoid the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/the-jet-stream-explained\">jet stream<\/a> use a forecast service (Google: \u2018jet stream forecast\u2019).<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-5-0\"><strong>Step 5<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/Photograph-moon-crater-05-8a833a1.jpg\" alt=\"Photograph craters on the Moon step 05\" class=\"wp-image-57239\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">Use a Barlow lens or other such optical amplifier to increase the image-scale. The optimum focal length to aim for under average seeing conditions is given by 825 x Ps, where \u2018Ps\u2019 is the size of your camera\u2019s pixels in microns, Under good to excellent seeing use 2060 x Ps. Use an optical amplifier to get you close to these values.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-6-0\"><strong>Step 6<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"876\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/Photograph-moon-crater-06-6201aab.jpg\" alt=\"Photograph craters on the Moon step 06\" class=\"wp-image-57240\"\/><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">Longer wavelengths are less affected by seeing. Imaging with a mono camera through a red or infrared pass filter may produce steadier results. Some colour cameras have excellent infrared sensitivity and can be used this way too. Aim to capture at least 1,000 frames. Process in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/astrophoto-tips\/a-guide-to-astrophotography-stacking\/\">stacking<\/a> program and tweak the result. <\/p><p><em><strong>Have you managed to capture a beautiful image of the Moon?
