{"id":63844,"date":"2024-09-17T08:32:27","date_gmt":"2024-09-17T08:32:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/5a64a688-1b31-4b42-af18-0eab99afa8e8"},"modified":"2024-09-17T09:41:04","modified_gmt":"2024-09-17T09:41:04","slug":"the-ring-nebula-the-beautiful-dying-throes-of-an-ageing-star","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcskyatnight\/rss_feed\/the-ring-nebula-the-beautiful-dying-throes-of-an-ageing-star\/","title":{"rendered":"The Ring Nebula, the beautiful dying throes of an ageing star"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Facts and images about the Ring Nebula, M57, a planetary nebula found 2,000 lightyears away in Lyra. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Iain Todd\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Tuesday, 17 September 2024 at 08:32 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>The Ring Nebula, also known as M57, is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/planetary-nebula\">planetary nebula<\/a> found 2,000 lightyears away in the Lyra constellation.<\/p><p>It&#8217;s special because it&#8217;s one of the most iconic and beautiful planetary nebulae known to astronomers and astrophotographers, angled towards Earth so we can marvel at its majestic appearance.<\/p><p>The Ring Nebula is also known at M57, the 57th entry in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/messier-catalogue\">Charles Messier<\/a>&#8216;s famous catalogue of deep-sky objects, known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/messier-catalogue\/\">Messier Catalogue<\/a>.<\/p><p>It was discovered by French astronomer Antoine Darquier de Pellepoix in January 1779.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This image is a composite of the Ring Nebula (Messier 57) combining Hubble Wide Field Camera 3 data with observations of the nebula\u2019s outer halo from the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) in Arizona, USA.<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is the Ring Nebula?<\/strong><\/h2><p>The Ring Nebula is a planetary nebula.<\/p><p>Planetary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/beginners-guide-nebulae\">nebulae<\/a> like the Ring Nebula have nothing to do with planets, but are a result of an ageing, Sun-like star ejecting cosmic material into space, producing a spherical, puffed-out shape.<\/p><p>The Ring Nebula is no different: it has a dying star at its centre and this is the reason it has a large, ring-like structure.<\/p><p>Observations with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/hubble-space-telescope-facts-history\">Hubble Space Telescope<\/a> revealed that the Ring Nebula actually consists of an inner, rugby ball-shaped region of gas seen end-on from Earth (blue in the image below) that is piercing the outer red ring-shaped material.<\/p><p><em><strong>Read our guide to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/planetary-nebulae-spot-night-sky\">best planetary nebulae to spot in the night sky<\/a>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"1280\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/05\/Messier-57_aka_ring_nebula-acaa48c.jpg\" alt=\"Hubble has helped to define the shape of the Ring Nebula, revealing it to be doughnut shaped, with lower density material at its core. Wesson<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to find the Ring Nebula<\/strong><\/h2><p>The nebula lies south of the bright star Vega, which makes up the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/constellations-asterisms-what-difference\">asterism<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/summer-triangle\">Summer Triangle<\/a> (one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/best-summer-constellations\">best summer constellations<\/a> and asterisms, in our opinion).<\/p><p>A good trick for locating the Ring Nebula is to find stars Sulafat and Sheliak in Lyra.<\/p><p>The\u00a0Ring Nebula sits three-fifths of the way along the line from Sulafat the second brightest star in the contellation, towards Sheliak.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full has-lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1129\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/09\/sulafat.jpg\" alt=\"Location of the star Sulafat in the constellation Lyra.
