Although this does the much larger form of the celestial ram a great injustice, it does provide a convenient method of identifying Hamal (Alpha (\u03b1) Arietis), the star marking the eastern end of the \u2018bent line\u2019.\u00a0<\/p><p>It lies at the relatively close distance of 65.8 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/lightyear\">lightyears<\/a> from Earth and is believed to play host to a large orbiting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/exoplanets\">exoplanet<\/a>, 1.8x more massive than Jupiter and orbiting its primary every 381 days.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full has-lightbox\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Chart showing the constellation Aries and the location of bright star Hamal. Credit: BBC Sky at Night Magazine<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hamal classification, size and brightness<\/strong><\/h2><p>Hamal is a cool orange giant, 14.9x larger than our Sun and 1.5x as massive.<\/p><p>Its bolometric luminosity \u2013 that is its luminosity across all wavelengths \u2013 is 91x larger than the Sun\u2019s.<\/p><p>Hamal has exhausted its core hydrogen and is now evolving along the path of becoming a red giant star. \u00a0<\/p><p>This is one of the few stars that has had its diameter accurately measured.
