autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Golf<\/strong><\/h2><p>At the risk of having a good spacewalk ruined, the first to set a trend for sport in space and play golf on the Moon was Apollo 14 astronaut <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/alan-shepard-first-american-in-space\">Alan Shepard<\/a>.<\/p><p>During a live broadcast from the Moon in February 1971, he decided to share his skills by attempting to drive a ball down the lunar fairway with a six iron.<\/p><p>Whereas Earth-based golfers might be able to blame a tactical cough from a playing partner for any miscue, Shepard\u2019s defence for several unimpressive shots was literally out of this world.<\/p><p>For a start, the club wasn\u2019t exactly regulation kit \u2013 it was the head of a six iron attached to a modified sample-collecting device.<\/p><p>Then let\u2019s consider Shepard\u2019s spacesuit: less a Pringle sweater, more a garment protecting against certain death, the material of which did nothing for free movement, ultimately forcing Shepard to play his shot single-handed with a challenged swing.<\/p><p>Roll on to 2006 and it was the turn of Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin to tee off.<\/p><p>Tyurin used his own gold-plated six iron to drive a ball from the \u2018porch\u2019 area of the ISS. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Russian cosmonaut hits golf ball from ISS in stunt\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/b7QuSgPbF3k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>With US astronaut Michael L\u00f3pez-Alegr\u00eda holding his feet to steady him (standard golf procedure), Tyurin\u2019s single-handed shot saw a skewed ball leave the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/international-space-station-facts-history\">International Space Station<\/a>.<\/p><p>Despite its wayward trajectory, it registered as a record for the longest golf shot in history, the ball subsequently burning up in Earth\u2019s very own atmospheric \u2018clubhouse\u2019.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Football<\/strong><\/h2><p>Long before VAR was a glint in a referee\u2019s eye, football featured on the International Space Station during the 2014 World Cup, as NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman and Steve Swanson and German ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst had a celestial kickabout.<\/p><p>A recent study has even looked at how future astronauts could play <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/football-on-moon\">football on the Moon<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/09\/astronauts-football-space-station.mp4\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Astronauts playing football on the International Space Station during the 2014 World Cup. Credit: NASA<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Baseball<\/strong><\/h2><p>The Space Station has also been the venue for another popular sport: a game of baseball, albeit one without the regulation nine players, when Japanese astronaut Satoshi Furukawa decided to play against himself.<\/p><p>In space \u2018slow motion\u2019, Furukawa first pitched the ball, then \u2018swam\u2019 to outpace it, grabbed a bat to take a swing, before attempting to field the strike off his own batting.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Chess<\/strong><\/h2><p>A more cerebral encounter was the epic 1970 game of chess entitled \u2018Earth vs Space\u2019.<\/p><p>Cosmonauts Andrian Nikolayev and Vitaly Sevastyanov put their Soyuz 9 on autopilot in orbit as they locked pawns with Viktor Gorbatko, a fellow cosmonaut, and Nikolai Kamanin, the head of the cosmonaut training programme, both back at mission control on Earth.<\/p><p>The six-hour game, played over radio with a real chess set on the spacecraft, ended in a draw.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cosmonaut Andriyan Nikolayev (left), pictured with Pavel Popovich and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, Red Square, Moscow, August 1962.
