Photo by JUAN MABROMATA\/AFP via Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><\/div><\/div><p><button class=\"nav-button__prev\" id=\"12345-prev\"><svg class=\"icon\" style=\"transform:rotate(180deg)\"\/><\/button><button class=\"nav-button__next\" id=\"12345-next\"><svg class=\"icon\"\/><\/button><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-october-2024-solar-eclipse-explained\"><strong>October 2024 solar eclipse explained<\/strong><\/h2><p>An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon crosses in front of the Sun and its apparent size in the sky is not quite enough to cover the Sun\u2019s disk.<\/p><p>On October 2, 2024 about 93% of the Sun was eclipsed by the Moon, causing a &#8216;ring of fire&#8217; to be visible for a maximum of 7 minutes 25 seconds.<\/p><p>Unlike during the totality period of a total solar eclipse, the entirety of an annular solar eclipse must be viewed through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/top-astronomy-kit\/best-solar-eclipse-glasses\">solar eclipse glasses<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/top-astronomy-kit\/best-solar-telescopes\">solar telescopes<\/a>.<\/p><p>On either side of annularity, it\u2019s possible to see phenomena such as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baily%27s_beads\">Baily&#8217;s beads<\/a>, the last and first drops of sunlight.<\/p><p>The closer you are to the edge of the path, the longer these beads last for (up to a few minutes at the extremes), but the shorter the duration of the &#8216;ring of fire&#8217;.<\/p><p>So, eclipse-chasers must make a choice.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"783\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/05\/puerto-san-julian-argentina.jpg\" alt=\"Puerto San Juli\u00e1n on the coast of Santa Cruz province, Argentina, will see the full annular solar eclipse on October 2, 2024. Credit: Candela Monde \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-weather-for-the-october-2-eclipse\"><strong>Where it was visible<\/strong><\/h2><p>This was an exclusive eclipse, with a roughly 165-mile (266-kilometre) wide path of annularity crossing just 175,000 people, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/eclipse\/solar\/2024-october-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Timeanddate<\/a>, which also provided <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/eclipse\/map\/2024-october-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an excellent map<\/a>.<\/p><p>Although the &#8216;ring of fire&#8217; was only seen from Easter Island, Chile and Argentina, all of South America and much of Antarctica saw a partial solar eclipse.<\/p><p>The Falkland Islands saw an 84% partial solar eclipse, South Georgia Island 76%, Santiago in Chile 44%, Buenos Aires in Argentina 42% and Elephant Island in Antarctica 56%.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/10\/GettyImages-2175467498.jpg\" alt=\"Residents and tourists gathered to view the annular solar eclipse at Isla de Pascua in the Pacific Ocean, Chile, on October 2, 2024.
