As far as we know, it&#8217;s not been identified before,&#8221; says Amy Simon of NASA&#8217;s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, lead author of the study.<\/p><p>&#8220;This is really the first time we&#8217;ve had the proper imaging cadence of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/planets\/jupiter-great-red-spot\">Great Red Spot<\/a>.<\/p><p>&#8220;With Hubble&#8217;s high resolution we can say that the Great Red Spot is definitively squeezing in and out at the same time as it moves faster and slower.<\/p><p>&#8220;That was very unexpected, and at present there are no hydrodynamic explanations.&#8221;<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full has-lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"636\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/10\/hubble-great-red-spot.jpg\" alt=\"Hubble Space Telescope images of Jupiter's Great Red Spot spanning about 90 days between December 2023 and March 2024. Credit: NASA, ESA, Amy Simon (NASA-GSFC); Image Processing: Joseph DePasquale (STScI)<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hubble&#8217;s storm study<\/strong><\/h2><p>The astronomers behind this Hubble Space Telescope study of Jupiter&#8217;s Great Red Spot say the results could help contextualise what we know about hurricanes on Earth within the wider Solar System.<\/p><p>And the data could also help astronomers understand more about weather on planets orbiting other stars, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/exoplanets\">exoplanets<\/a>.<\/p><p>&#8220;When we look closely, we see a lot of things are changing from day to day,&#8221; says Simon of the study into the Great Red Spot.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full has-lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/10\/hubble-jupiter.jpg\" alt=\"Hubble Space Telescope images of Jupiter spanning about 90 days between December 2023 and March 2024. Credit: NASA, ESA, STScI, Amy Simon (NASA-GSFC); Image Processing: Joseph DePasquale (STScI)<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Ultraviolet-light images show the core of the storm is brightest when the Great Red Spot is largest in its oscillation cycle.<\/p><p>&#8220;As it accelerates and decelerates, the Great Red Spot is pushing against the windy jet streams to the north and south of it,&#8221; says co-investigator Mike Wong of the University of California at Berkeley.<\/p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s similar to a sandwich where the slices of bread are forced to bulge out when there&#8217;s too much filling in the middle.&#8221;<\/p><p>Wong says that in the case of Neptune, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/farthest-planet-from-earth\">farthest planet from Earth<\/a> in the Solar System, dark spots are seen drifting without jet streams holding them in place.<\/p><p>The team predict the Great Red Spot will continue shrinking before adopting a more stable, less-elongated shape.<\/p><p>&#8220;Right now it&#8217;s over-filling its latitude band relative to the wind field.
