Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Mercury will be a wonderful morning object in December 2024 and visible from mid-December through to the end of the year.<\/p><p>Mercury really improves from 5 December 2024 onwards, reaching inferior conjunction on 6 December.<\/p><p>You&#8217;ll see it rising in the southeast, and the situation gets better for observing Mercury as December rolls on and Christmas approaches.<\/p><p>By 23 December 2024, Mercury will be a bright &#8216;morning star&#8217; shining at mag. \u20130.2 and rising nearly two hours before the Sun.<\/p><p>For more info, read our guide on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/observing-mercury\">how to observe Mercury<\/a>.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Venus<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/04\/2020-05-B3_1B_Venus_IMG_6710_Pete-lawrence-1-6c9bf8f-scaled-e1676986794689.jpg\" alt=\"Venus is set to disappear from the evening sky towards the end of the month. Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Unlike Mercury, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/venus-morning-star-evening-star\">Venus will be an &#8216;evening star&#8217;<\/a> in December 2024, and probably the best naked-eye sight of all planets over Christmas.<\/p><p>As November 2024 begins, Venus sets 90 minutes after the Sun, and this increases to 3 hours by the end of November, when the planet will be shining at mag. \u20134.0.<\/p><p>Things improve throughout December 2024, Venus remaining in the sky four hours after sunset by the end of 2024.<\/p><p>This means you can expect Venus to be a bright &#8216;Christmas star&#8217; in 2024, shining against a very dark, winter night sky.<\/p><p>Look for it low in the south-southwest after sunset.<\/p><p>And keep an eye out for an nights when Venus is near the Moon, which is one of the most beautiful naked-eye <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/conjunctions-in-night-sky-how-see\">conjunctions<\/a> you can see.<\/p><p>Observe Venus through a telescope in December 2024 and you&#8217;ll see it in its gibbous phase: quite something to behold.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mars<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1232\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/05\/mars-beehive-cluster-923e031.jpg\" alt=\"Mars passing across the Beehive Cluster in October 2011, imaged through a f\/3.3 reflector. Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Mars keeps brightening as December approaches, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/mars-opposition\">Red Planet reaches opposition<\/a> on 16 January 2025, meaning the Christmas period is a great time to observe it.<\/p><p>Watch out for a daytime lunar occultation of Mars on 18 December 2024, when the planet will disappear behind the Moon.<\/p><p><strong><em>For more info, read our guide on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/how-to-observe-mars\">how to observe Mars<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jupiter<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1120\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/03\/jupiter-uranus.jpg\" alt=\"An image of Jupiter and Uranus together in the sky in 2010. Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Jupiter will be one of the best planets to observe in December 2024 and over the Christmas period, the gas giant king reaching opposition on 7 December.<\/p><p>You can see it in Taurus near the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/hyades-open-cluster\">Hyades star cluster<\/a>, which could make for a wonderful photo opportunity.<\/p><p>Jupiter will ride high across the sky over December and Christmas 2024, meaning we should get clear, crisp views of it.<\/p><p>Observe it through your telescope and you&#8217;ll see its iconic atmospheric <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/observe-jupiter-belts-zones\">belts and zones<\/a>, its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/planets\/jupiter-galilean-moons\">Galilean Moons<\/a> and the Earth-sized cyclone known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/planets\/jupiter-great-red-spot\">Great Red Spot<\/a>.<\/p><p>Find out more with our guide on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/observe-jupiter-through-telescope\">how to observe Jupiter<\/a>.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Saturn<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1125\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/10\/14_Aidan-Hay_Saturn-and-Jupiter-over-London-576de73-e1634111241194.jpg\" alt=\"Saturn and Jupiter appearing as bright dots in the night sky over light-polluted London\" class=\"wp-image-100717\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Aidan Thomas Hay captured this image of Saturn and Jupiter over London on 2 August 2021 using a Samsung S20 smartphone. Credit: Aidan Hay.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Saturn reached opposition on 7 September 2024, but the ringed planet will still be high in the sky through December 2024 and observable into 2025.<\/p><p>There will be some wonderful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/saturn-titan-transits\">Saturn Titan transits<\/a> to observe through your telescope, as you&#8217;ll get to see its largest Moon and shadow passing across the ring planet&#8217;s disc.<\/p><p>Take a look at Saturn&#8217;s rings through your telescope, too. The planet&#8217;s ring system is currently becoming more angled towards us, meaning it will get harder to see from our perspective on Earth.<\/p><p>Saturn undergoes what&#8217;s known as a ring-plane crossing on 23 March 2025, when the rings will seem to disappear from view, such will be their angle relative to Earth.<\/p><p>For more info, read our guide on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/observing-saturn-telescope\">how to observe Saturn<\/a>.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Uranus<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1100\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/05\/QHY5III200M-uranus-moons.jpg\" alt=\"Uranus and five of its moons\" class=\"wp-image-156425\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Uranus and five of its moons<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Have you ever seen Uranus through a telescope? The ice giants Uranus and Neptune are probably the least observed by amateur astronomers, and have a reputation among beginners as being dauntingly tricky.<\/p><p>December 2024 could be the time to observe Uranus, though, as it reaches opposition on 17 November and will be well-placed throughout Christmas and into 2025.<\/p><p>You can find it near the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/stars\/star-clusters\/pleiades\">Pleiades open cluster,<\/a> which rides high in the sky throughout December and January.<\/p><p>While Uranus is technically visible with the naked eye if you have good eyesight and are observing away from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/light-pollution-astronomy\">light pollution<\/a>, you should be able to pick it out clearly with a small telescope.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Neptune<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"765\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/11\/Neptune-Triton-18f104f-e1606311602224.jpg\" alt=\"Try and spot Triton, Neptune\u2019s largest moon, visible as a faint dot near the planet.
