{"id":65029,"date":"2024-10-25T08:55:47","date_gmt":"2024-10-25T08:55:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ce519a9c-f28e-4670-a346-34fabf4ba002"},"modified":"2024-10-25T09:39:37","modified_gmt":"2024-10-25T09:39:37","slug":"the-sun-has-released-another-strong-solar-flare-ahead-of-this-weekend-according-to-nasa","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcskyatnight\/rss_feed\/the-sun-has-released-another-strong-solar-flare-ahead-of-this-weekend-according-to-nasa\/","title":{"rendered":"The Sun has released another strong solar flare ahead of this weekend, according to NASA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"> <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Iain Todd\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Friday, 25 October 2024 at 08:55 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>The Sun has released another strong flare, strong enough to cause a radio blackout report in the US.<\/p><p>NASA and the Space Weather Prediction Center, part of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, announced that an X3.3-class flare erupted from the Sun at 03:57 UTC on 24 October 2024.<\/p><p>&#8216;X&#8217; denotes that this is one of the strongest types of solar flare that can occur.<\/p><p>&#8220;Flares happen when the powerful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/what-are-magnetic-fields-how-do-they-affect-universe\">magnetic fields<\/a> in and around the Sun reconnect,&#8221; says NASA.<\/p><p>They&#8217;re a symptom of high activity on the surface of the Sun, which is currently being observed as the Sun reaches the peak of the so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/understanding-sun-science-solar-cycle\">Solar Cycle<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Solar flare captured on 24 October 2024 by NASA&#8217;s Solar Dynamics Observatory.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The Solar Cycle is the name given to the 11-year period of peak and trough that sees our host star go from quiet and inactive to very much active, producing dynamic features such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/sun\/sunspots\">sunspots<\/a>, solar flares and coronal mass ejections.<\/p><p>In fact, solar scientists announced on 15 October 2024 that the Sun had officially reached the peak of the current cycle, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/new-solar-cycle-begun\">Solar Cycle 25<\/a>.<\/p><p>That&#8217;s why we&#8217;re seeing more frequent and intense <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/space-weather-met-office-predicting-solar-phenomena\">space weather<\/a> and displays of the aurora, as the Sun&#8217;s solar wind interacts with Earth&#8217;s magnetic field.<\/p><p>This is what led to the huge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/aurora-10-may-2024\">aurora display of May 2024<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/aurora-october-2024\">aurora display of October 2024<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/10\/Omar-Hashmi.jpg\" alt=\"Aurora borealis captured by Omar Hashmi, Preston, Lancashire, UK, 11 October 2024. Exposure: 10 seconds exposure, 12 MP, Image 3024 x 4032, ISO 2000, 25 mm, -0.1 ev, f 1.78\" class=\"wp-image-163266\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Aurora borealis captured by Omar Hashmi, Preston, Lancashire, UK, 11 October 2024.<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Aurora on the way?<\/strong><\/h2><p>So does the solar flare of 24 October 2024 mean we can look forward to another weekend of strong aurora displays across the globe?<\/p><p>Unfortunately not.<\/p><p>While the Space Weather Predication Center reported a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spaceweather.gov\/news\/r3-strong-hf-radio-blackout-observed-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">strong radio blackout<\/a>&#8221; as a result of the flare from Sunspot Region 3869, there are currently no strong aurora alerts in place.<\/p><p>And the UK&#8217;s Met Office says &#8220;the strong X3.3 flare produced a coronal mass ejection that has been assessed as a likely miss, passing behind Earth, though some Earth-directed component is possible from shock possibly arriving 26 or 27 Oct.&#8221;<\/p><p>And any delayed impact on Earth is likely to be a &#8220;minor-moderate geomagnetic storm&#8221;, the Met Office said.<\/p><p>The free aurora alert service, <a href=\"https:\/\/aurorawatch.lancs.ac.uk\/\">AuroraWatchUK<\/a>, run by Lancaster University in the UK, is also noting &#8220;no significant activity&#8221;.<\/p><p>There are multiple ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/how-predict-aurora\">predict when aurora will occur<\/a>, so if you&#8217;re interested in catching the next display, be sure to follow aurora alert groups on social media and sign up to receive notifications.<\/p> <\/body><\/html>\n<hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Iain Todd Published: Friday, 25 October 2024 at 08:55 AM The Sun has released another strong flare, strong enough to cause a radio blackout report in the US.
