Credit: NASA\/Johns Hopkins APL <\/figcaption> <\/figure> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>DART asteroid debris will hit Earth<\/strong><\/h2> <p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/meteor-showers-how-observe-record-shooting-stars\">Meteor showers<\/a> are naturally caused when Earth passes through a stream of debris left behind by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-comets\">comet<\/a> or, sometimes, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/asteroids\">asteroid<\/a>.<\/p> <p>The fact that this debris comes from the DART mission impact makes this the first artificial, or human-made, meteor shower.<\/p> <p>As astronomers know the precise time and location of the impact, this offered a rare opportunity to study how the large volume of debris it created spreads through the Solar System.<\/p> <p>By simulating over three million particles of different sizes and speeds, a team of researchers have predicted how they think the debris cloud will behave.<\/p> <figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"797\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/08\/perseids-peak-tonight.jpg\" alt=\"Natural meteor showers are caused when Earth passes through debris from a comet.
