Photo by Lorenzo Di Cola\/NurPhoto via Getty Images <\/figcaption> <\/figure> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Beaver Moon explained<\/strong><\/h2> <p>&#8216;Beaver Moon&#8217; is among the stranger nicknames given to full Moons.<\/p> <p>You may have come across of lots of different names attributed to full Moons, from the commonly-heard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/moon\/harvest-moon\">Harvest Moon<\/a> to other names like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/worm-moon\">Worm Moon<\/a> and Strawberry Moon.<\/p> <p>These are just nicknames, and don&#8217;t actually have any bearing on how a particular month&#8217;s full Moon will appear.<\/p> <p>So <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/beaver-moon\">why is the November full Moon called a Beaver Moon<\/a>?<\/p> <figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"> <div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Why is it called the Beaver Moon? #beavermoon #supermoon #stargazing #podcast\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wA_giHIzSGw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/> <\/div> <\/figure> <p>The full Moon names reflect what&#8217;s happening in nature during the month in which that full Moon appears.<\/p> <p>In November, beavers are very active gathering food for winter, building dams and preparing for the colder months ahead.<\/p> <p>The other reason it&#8217;s called a Beaver Moon \u2013 and one that more reflects human activity, historically speaking \u2013 is because beavers would have been hunted for their fur around this time of year.<\/p> <p>Alternative names for the Beaver Moon include the Freezing Moon or Frost Moon, again reflecting the arrival of colder months.<\/p> <p>But don&#8217;t be fooled by the name. Credit: Alamy Stock Photo <\/figcaption> <\/figure> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2024 Super Beaver Moon<\/strong><\/h2> <p>There have been four so-called supermoons in 2024, and the 15 November full Moon is the final one of the year.<\/p> <p>So what is a supermoon, and are they really anything to get excited about?<\/p> <p>A supermoon is more accurately described as a &#8216;perigee syzygy&#8217; Moon.<\/p> <p>&#8216;Perigee&#8217; means that the Moon is at the closest point in its orbit to Earth.<\/p> <p>And &#8216;syzygy&#8217; refers to three celestial bodies in alignment: in this case the Sun, Earth and the Moon.<\/p> <p>So a &#8216;supermoon&#8217;, simply, is a full Moon that&#8217;s a bit bigger and brighter than normal.<\/p> <figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/01\/Perigee_apogee_moon-c550ade.png\" alt=\"A perigee full Moon (left) appears 30% brighter and 14% larger than an apogee full Moon (right).
