African forest elephant

Analysing faecal DNA allows conservationists to track individual forest elephants

Predictably, the poo of the African forest elephant is also rather large. It can vary according to the size of the individual – up to the size of a small football. Finding fresh dung is important for scientists undertaking genetic analysis. “A fresh dung pile is relatively easy to identify, usually you can still smell it,” says Tina Vogt from Elephant Research and Conservation. “Due to their vegetarian diet, the elephant poo is very fibrous and firm.”
