Winter holds the promise of springtime

At the end of each of the last few years, I’ve found myself thinking, “Well, at least next year will be better.” You’d think I’d learn! I’m beginning to envy those of my fellow mammals currently preparing for hibernation; I wouldn’t mind taking a restful break from the world for a little while too. We are living through remarkable times – a global pandemic, war returning to Europe, the climate emergency, political upheaval… and all with huge implications for nature. But I never lose hope for the future.
One of this year’s key events was King Charles III’s accession to the throne. As the Prince of Wales, Charles was always an outspoken conservationist, highlighting issues from air pollution and peat bogs, to climate change and plastics in our oceans. But now that he’s King, will he still be able to champion conservation and wildlife issues? Only time will tell…
