Born Free
Meru National Park has been associated with lions since George Adamson and his wife Joy raised an orphaned cub called Elsa to adulthood, and successfully released her back into the wild. Joy wrote about Elsa in her book Born Free, which was made into an Oscar-winning film. To mark the film’s 50th anniversary, writer Joanna Eede travelled to Kenya with Will Travers, president of the Born Free Foundation, to visit lion conservation projects and reflect on Elsa’s legacy. “Elsa was significant because she… was regarded as an individual,” says lion conservationist Shivani Bhalla.
