How did you get into photographing wildlife in the first place? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n

My love of wildlife started from a young age \u2013 learning about nature was instilled into me by my late mother. I used to draw what I saw as she couldn\u2019t afford a camera. <\/p>\n\n

If you weren\u2019t a photographer, what would you be? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Something outdoors, with nature as my constant companion. <\/p>\n\n

Have you ever had any close calls while on a shoot? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n

I was photographing grey seals in the UK and I didn\u2019t realise the tide was coming in fast behind me. It nearly cut me off, but I was able to extract myself just in time. <\/p>\n\n

What\u2019s your worse investment of time on a shoot? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n

On a shoot in Madagascar, my companions and I received a tip-off that a fossa \u2013 arelative of the mongoose \u2013 was visiting a nearby village. We built a makeshift hide and spent almost two days inside it before a stray dog turned up that the locals had mistaken for a fossa. <\/p>\n\n

What was your toughest shoot to date? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Trekking through the rainforests of Sumatra, Indonesia, looking for Sumatran orangutans. Everything there wants to eat you and the humidity is unbelievable. <\/p>\n\n

Has anything attempted to eat you? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n

I was confronted by a massive male Bengal tiger in Ranthambhore National Park, India. Thankfully my quick-thinking guide helped us avoid a potentially dangerous situation. <\/p>\n\n

What\u2019s the most useless piece of kit you\u2019ve ever bought? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n

A GPS device that needs Wi-Fi to work. It didn\u2019t occur to me at the time that most places I visit for photography are very remote and won\u2019t actually have WiFi. <\/p>\n\n

What\u2019s your one piece of advice to budding wildlife photographers? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n

When you enter the theatre of nature, always work with respect and adhere to a code of ethics for your subjects. Think you are a visitor \u2013 and act accordingly. <\/p>\n\n
