The mere mention of Yellowstone always brings to my mind Yogi Bear talking the long-suffering Boo-Boo into another daring raid on pic-a-nic baskets in their own Jellystone Park. It\u2019s a warm picture, one that takes me back to simpler times. The real Yellowstone goes back much further, of course, and this issue we celebrate its 150th birthday as a national park (p40).<\/p>\n\n

Today\u2019s world would be largely unrecognisable to people back then. But the foresight of those who chose to preserve the region has inspired some 6,554 other areas around the world to be declared national parks in the intervening years. <\/p>\n\n

These parks are largely protected from the so-called progress that increasingly brings humans and wildlife into conflict, the subject of Mark Carwardine\u2019s column (p27). <\/p>\n\n
