Now director of field operations at Save the Elephants, he\u2019s been named as a finalist in the Tusk Conservation Awards, which celebrate Africa-based conservation leaders and wildlife rangers. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\"><strong>\u201cWhen I first heard <\/strong>the news, I couldn\u2019t believe it!\u201d David says. \u201cI hope it will inspire the next generation of Kenyan conservationists to follow in my path. Professionally, it will help my efforts in elephant conservation and allow me to scale up my mission to create more wildlife corridors and develop even tighter relationships with leaders.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\"><strong>\u201cOver the past 20 <\/strong>years working with elephants, I have learnt to identify 500 individuals through their ear patterns and tusk shapes,\u201d he says. \u201cMany of them are like friends, and I know who they are by the way they hold themselves.\u201d Recognising individual elephants is key to understanding how elephant society works, which in turn helps conservationists design solutions for coexistence that work for them and humans. <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"no-tts wp-block-image article-in-image photo\"><figure class=\"no-tts aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/dj9jqhxgw9833.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2022\/11\/DSC_3334-David-in-the-STE-vehicle_SarahMarshall_cmyk_preview-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"no-tts wp-image-22234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2022\/11\/DSC_3334-David-in-the-STE-vehicle_SarahMarshall_cmyk_preview-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2022\/11\/DSC_3334-David-in-the-STE-vehicle_SarahMarshall_cmyk_preview-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2022\/11\/DSC_3334-David-in-the-STE-vehicle_SarahMarshall_cmyk_preview-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2022\/11\/DSC_3334-David-in-the-STE-vehicle_SarahMarshall_cmyk_preview-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2022\/11\/DSC_3334-David-in-the-STE-vehicle_SarahMarshall_cmyk_preview.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>David on patrol in Samburu<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\"><strong>\u201cOur field team collects <\/strong>data on a daily basis from a study elephant population,\u201d David explains. \u201cThey scrutinise elephant families: all births, disappearances, and estrus and musth.\u201d A digital database enables analysis of population dynamics, social structure, individual and population dietary preferences, seasonal dispersal, paternity from DNA, and mortality from different causes, including illegal poaching. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\"><strong>\u201cAs a Samburu elder, <\/strong>I am able to converse with all levels of leadership, and inspire <span>behavioural change in local communities,\u201d says David. He and his colleagues were able to persuade community leaders to act to stop elephant poaching in northern Kenya during the epidemic there between 2009 and 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\"><strong>\u201cThanks to the efforts <\/strong>of organisations like Save the <span>Elephants, Kenya Wildlife Service and other partners, poaching has reduced considerably in Kenya,\u201d says David. But these creatures are now facing a new threat: human-elephant conflict over shrinking grazing and water resources, resulting from overgrazing and climate change. \u201cSolving this is going to be a
