One \u2018precious\u2019 new stream tree frog was found <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n
WHAT IS IT?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n

Just a single individual of Hyloscirtus <\/em>tolkieni, <\/em>a stream tree frog, was found and captured during fieldwork, despite focused searches. However, it was enough for the authors of a ZooKeys <\/em>paper to be able to describe it as a new species as it was distinct enough in its morphology from other species in the Hyloscirtus <\/em>genus. <\/p>\n\n

WHERE IS IT? <\/strong><\/h5>\n\n

The species\u2019 known distribution is limited to the place where it was found and captured \u2013 the southern eastern slopes of the Cordillera Oriental in the R\u00edo Negro-Sopladora National Park, Ecuador. <\/p>\n\n

WHAT IS THE MEANING BEHIND THE SCIENTIFIC NAME?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n

The specific epithet \u2018tolkieni\u2019 is named in honour of author J R R Tolkien. Scientists say that the colours of the newly described species \u201cevoke the magnificent creatures that seem to only exist in fantasy worlds\u201d. <\/p>\n\n
