How did you get into photography? <\/strong>
I grew up in the Gal\u00e1pagos. I was using my dad\u2019s camera to record wildlife until a filmmaker gifted me his old Pentax SLR. I then met the editor of Audubon <\/em>magazine and, at 19, had a story published on giant tortoises. I\u2019ve never looked back! <\/p>\n\n

What would you be if you weren\u2019t a wildlife photographer? <\/strong>
Very boring or dead. <\/p>\n\n

Which of your shots is most important to you, and why? <\/strong>
That\u2019s like asking a mother to choose her favourite child… <\/p>\n\n

Any \u2018wow\u2019 moments? <\/strong>
Nothing has amazed me more than watching a few wise bull sealions herd tuna into natural traps in the shoreline \u2013 they simply run out of water and leap ashore. I couldn\u2019t believe my eyes when I realised what they were doing. <\/p>\n\n

What about epic fails? <\/strong>
I once went on a week-long hike in the Andes looking for spectacled bears and woolly mountain tapirs. I saw nothing but the inside of a rain cloud. <\/p>\n\n

Which animal plays most havoc with your kit? <\/strong>
Nesting sea turtles \u2013 they fling great flipperloads of salty wet sand in the pitch darkness, and no camera is made for that. But I don\u2019t usually need help from animals to damage my gear. <\/p>\n\n

What\u2019s been your closest shave? <\/strong>
I once met a bull elephant in Kenya. I did what I\u2019d been told: ward him off by revving the engine and lurching forward. Big mistake! Suddenly the tip of his tusk was six inches from my face. He ripped the metal skin off the vehicle as if it were a sweet wrapper. <\/p>\n\n

Any advice you can give to budding wildlife photographers? <\/strong>
Do it with passion, with energy, and with everything you\u2019ve got. Don\u2019t try and count what you put in versus what you get out. <\/p>\n\n

How to use the manual settings on your camera <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A low F-stop creates soft backgrounds <\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s fine to use a camera\u2019s \u2018auto mode\u2019 when you\u2019re starting out, but to take your photography to the next level you need to master the manual settings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 APERTURE<\/strong>
How much light is allowed through the camera\u2019s lens. A low F-stop gives a shallow depth of field and a high F-stop captures background, too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 SHUTTER SPEED <\/strong>
How quickly the camera\u2019s shutter opens and closes. Shorter times will capture a fast-moving subject in detail. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 ISO <\/strong>
How sensitive a camera is to light. Low ISOs work fine in bright situations, but you will need to ramp up the ISO in low light situations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
