This new species is part of the <em>Podogymnura <\/em>genus, which until recently had just two species in it. However, as well as describing <em>P. <\/em><em>intermedia, <\/em>the new paper also elevated <em>P. <\/em><em>minima <\/em>from a subspecies to a distinct species level, doubling the number of species in the genus. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\"><strong>WHERE IS IT? <\/strong>Like the other members of the <em>Podogymnura <\/em>genus, <em>P. <\/em><em>intermedia <\/em>is found in the Philippines. It was discovered during a survey on the mountains of eastern Mindanao, where there had never been surveys for mammals before. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\"><strong>WHAT DOES THE SCIENTIFIC NAME MEAN? <\/strong>The specific epithet \u2018intermedia\u2019 is derived from the Latin word \u2018intermedium\u2019, translating to intermediate.
