{"id":15779,"date":"2022-04-22T11:00:38","date_gmt":"2022-04-22T09:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/?p=60569"},"modified":"2022-04-22T11:14:10","modified_gmt":"2022-04-22T09:14:10","slug":"government-announces-natural-history-gcse","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcwildlife\/rss_feed\/government-announces-natural-history-gcse\/","title":{"rendered":"Government announces natural history GCSE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"><\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Megan Shersby\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Friday, 22 April 2022 at 12:00 am<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>In an event held at the <a href=\"\/\/www.nhm.ac.uk&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Natural History Museum, London<\/a>, the UK government\u2019s Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi announced that there would be a new <a href=\"\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/people\/life-lessons-why-a-natural-history-gcse-is-being-introduced\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Natural History GCSE<\/a>, which will be developed and brought into schools by 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement came as part of the <a href=\"\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/department-for-education&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Department of Education<\/a>\u2018s Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are delivering a new natural history GCSE,\u201d said Zahawi, \u201cwhich will, I hope, inspire young people and empower them, give them that agency, not to just be anxious and distressed about climate change, but actually to make a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The GCSE was first thought up by <a href=\"\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/author\/marycolwell\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Mary Colwell<\/a>, the\u00a0director of <a href=\"\/\/www.curlewaction.org&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Curlew Action<\/a> and author of <em>Curlew Moon<\/em> and <em>Tooth, Beak and Claw<\/em>, back in 2011 during a conversation with conservationist, and now-chair of <a href=\"\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/natural-england&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Natural England<\/a>, Tony Juniper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA GCSE in natural history could be a game-changer for the nature of Britain,\u201d she said. \u201cEveryone will have the opportunity to be nature-literate, to learn about British wildlife and how it relates to the rest of the world, which is essential for a sustainable, green future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since then, she has be petitioning the government for the GCSE and working with the OCR exam board to develop its content.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"&quot;twitter-tweet&quot;\" data-dnt=\"&quot;true&quot;\"><p lang=\"&quot;en&quot;\" dir=\"&quot;ltr&quot;\">The GCSE in Natural History was formally announced this evening in the magnificent Natural History Museum.
